Hard to believe that this song is 10 years old!! Another excellent reason to love PEI folk music. Every song brings with it a story, never to be forgotten.

Recently discovered this song, and I must say that it creates such a strange sense of belonging. I've never listened to Acadian music before or ever been to Canada, but this song makes it feel like I've known the culture and the people for ages. It actually made me tear up. I can't explain the feeling. So... thank you.

When I was around 8 years old I hear y'all at Festival International in Lafayette Louisiana, I forced my parents to buy a cd of the album because of how much I loved this song. Almost 8 years later I still love this song.

Thanks to 10 Strings for immortalizing this song and keeping this piece of Rustico history alive. :) Lyrics: The word had spread from door to door Down the barachois road to the harbour shore Old Joe Labelle would steal the house from the widow Victoria He'd found some deed that claimed her land And a handshake deal just wouldn't stand In a court of law he did demand that the house belonged to him Ring the church bells in the night We'll gather at the first starlight Bring your lamps, sleighs and mare to save the Widow's home Across the big field, o'er the pond We'll move this house before the dawn When Joe Labelle arrives he'll find his prize already gone It seems that some mistake was made On the day her husband made a trade And when he died he was betrayed by Joe Labelle's black heart He planned to force her to the cold And he'd bring the Sheriff and his fold So through the dead of Winter's hold we'd come to save her home Ring the church bells in the night We'll gather at the first starlight Bring your lamps, sleighs and mare to save the Widow's home Across the big field, o'er the pond We'll move this house before the dawn When Joe Labelle arrives he'll find his prize already gone You could see his breath freeze in the air As Perè Felix said the Lord's Prayer And passed the wine to all hands there Then he sang a sailor's song There must have been near forty men While their wives all held their lamps for them They fashioned logs, levers and skids while shivering to the bone With winches, logs and Dino's sleigh They slowly hauled the house away And the ice cracked like the break of day as across it she was drawn We rang the church bells in the night We worked until the morning light Brought our lamps, sleighs and mare to save the Widow's home Across the big field, o'er the pond We moved this house before the dawn Joe Labelle arrived and found his prize already gone We rang the church bells in the night We worked until the morning light Brought out lamps, sleighs and mare to save the Widow's home Across the big field, o'er the pond We moved this house before the dawn Joe Labelle arrived and found his prize already gone

We saw you In Putney, Vermont last Friday night, and we had a friend from France with us. We asked him what kind of music he liked, and he said only Rock and Roll...After the first song,.He was so into your music , he was clapping and stomping his feet!! He yelled the loudest for the ENCORE!! ( To be fair, you did wait 5 seconds, not 4 to reappear for that!) I hope you guys keep doing this beautiful artwork forever. The world is sure to catch up on your artistry soon, and make the lean touring years worth the effort!! You are incredible, and we can't wait to see you again! Best, Thom & Gregg

Where does the story of this song take place? Did the events actually happen?
@StringsAndGoat2 жыл бұрын
Good morning.Yes this is a true story. It happened in the community of Rustico PEI. I spoke with a 95 year old man 20 years ago who recalled the story in detail. It was a relative of mine. The house was moved across the ice to avoid possession by members of the community through the night. That house in later years was further moved on the ice to the central area of Rustico by my grandfather and it served as his house. A new portion of the house was built on and it now houses my brother. Great story!

Where do the lyrics to this song originate? They are just as well written as the music is. Is there a real historical event tied to them?
@StringsAndGoat4 ай бұрын
Hi there..The lyrics are from an uncle of 2 of the players Lennie Gallant and music from the fiddler Rowen Gallant.This is a true story that happened in Rustico PEI..It's a great story! I don't believe it has ever been documented however a knowledgeable elderly man in the community ( deceased for many years since ) recalls having heard the story and he grew up just down the road from the site where it is to have happened. Thanks for asking!

For us clods who sing along real loud in the car, oh please spell the road's name. i just throw in "sasquatch road" right now, and that won't do. and who said the Lord's Prayer? Cause I know it's not "Spare Helix," which is what my steering wheel puts up with now. Thanks, guys, for sharing your gifts with us and don't forget to pay that Albany speeding ticket. ;)
@StringsAndGoat8 жыл бұрын
Hi Kris - So glad you are singing along! The missing words are "Barachois Road" (French for Sandbar) and "Paré Felix" (the Priest - Father Felix) All the best!
