Have I really had this camera 6 months? Guess so, come and join me on this infield review and see what this camera can do.
So what's the backstory behind this video?
Well, I’m a Landscape photographer, based in the UK, searching for interesting locations, mainly around the UK, but also travelling further afield. I endeavour to make all of my videos as interesting as possible, with editing skills I've picked up over the years, also with adding music to match the mood of the locations and images. Using a basic set up, consisting of my DJI Osmo Action, my Mavic Pro Drone (although not all the time) and either my trusty Nikon D850 or my Nikon D7200 cameras, for the images.
I always show my images, no matter how unhappy I am with them, I think you as the viewer deserve to see the good along with the bad, after all, if it’s on the video, you've already seen behind the scenes.
So sit back, grab a coffee or a tea, relax and enjoy my slightly unprofessional, sometimes comical, but always crammed with passion video.
Don’t forget to Like, Subscribe and leave a comment, they always let me know that creating this material is being watched and appreciated.
#nikond850
Many Thanks.

Hi Ben, I have just upgraded from the D810 to the D850 and some of the points you have made resonate a little. I have spent time setting up, playing and testing the camera before going out on a shoot. I am loving the touch flippy screen , the resolution gives awesome detail, the level of built in features is top notch. I am not keen on the price of the memory cards. You can set this to do longer exposures than 30 seconds, but why did they not include an internal timing device rather then leaving you to time it yourself. For me so far it is a good upgrade from the D810, I have no intention of going mirrorless. Some great images captured and very nice processing. Thank you for sharing your experience.

A few years ago I upgraded from Canon APS-C to Nikon full frame. Started with the D750 which seemed to be such a huge leap. Then I acquired a Nikon D800E (36mp) and was shocked at the details. Then in 2020 I bought the D850 thinking it might be just a bit better but no…the jump to 46mp and all the new bells and whistles (focus peaking/ in camera focus stacking) brought my photography to the next level. I just came back from photographing Raptors and some images had to be shot at 10,000 to 14,400 ISO….absolutely no problem. All these leaps had $$$ leaps as well but after accumulating all the lens I think I’m set for the foreseeable future.

I use the Nikon Z9 for my wildlife work, which is exquisite when paired with the Nikkor Z 800mm 6.3. But…I find myself also using the D850 still as backup. Especially for the short distance, paired with a Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 FL. I will never sell it, it’s for me the best DSLR ever made.

I bought my 850 primarily for wildlife photography. I use a 200 to 500 zoom on a gimbal or hand-held and I am very happy with the results I get and appreciate the big sensor that allows me to crop in on, for example, a blue heron or osprey in flight at the pond near our house. I mainly use 55 point 3D back button focus and find the joy stick handy for moving the center focus point around when I'm looking at a stationary subject. I like the touch screen when reviewing images, but always am reminded to turn it off if the shutter fires when I'm using Live View to zoom to check focus on something. When the pandemic hit I started reading about landscape and astrophotography and then discovered KZbin. My wife and I have several individuals (characters) that we follow, you being one of them. We really liked the double waterfall at 8 minutes in.

Thank you so much Bill. I never really thought of the D850 as a wildlife camera due to the slower (although not bad) burst rate, but I guess it should be fine, and yes the options to crop the image to suit is really good, I'm always impressed how far you can go with that. Thanks again Bill, and really appreciated that both of you like the videos, all the best to you both.

After owning the D800 since release, I finally made the jump to the D850, purchased used from MBP with 6k actuations so the camera is barely used, it's like new. Managed to trade in my D800 for £380 and got the used D850 for £1389 (£1769 before part ex). One of the reasons for the upgrade was the focus issues on the D800 and was beginning to show its age. I got the Nikon 135 F2 DC and found the lens to be really soft especially wide open and even tried the manual finetune but still would back focus just behind the ear rather than the eye. On the D850 with the auto finetune, this issue is gone, so much sharper due to the focusing being on spot every time. For me it was worth the upgrade but the D800 has served me very well over the years. Excellent and informative video which reinforced my purchase!

I’ve owned sooo many Nikon cameras in the past 16 years, from d40x, d5100, d5200, d7100, d7200, d800, d500, d810, to d850. Today I mostly shoot with 2 d500’s and or 2 d850’s depending on the situation. I like my Nikon d810 for portraits but not for events where I’m constantly moving and having to move the focus point. I like the d500 and d850 joy stick toggle, the flip out screen, the touch screen, the xqd cards/sd cards. I do wish the d850 wasn’t SO LOUD. I shooter weddings with it so this is a bit of an issue to me. Once you use a joy stick toggle you’ll never go back to a camera that lacks one when shooting events. But I do keep my d810 for portrait work and just because I like it. So yes, I have 5 cameras and I admit I have a collection problem. I might (should) sell the 2 d500’s and my 3 DX lenses.

Love the video but I disagree with the leap from the D7200 to the D850. Perhaps in good light, there isn't much difference but when you start shooting in low light or action, that full frame and BSI CMOS of the D850 really makes a huge difference. I currently have the D7200 and the D5. I just purchased the D850 and haven't checked it out it out yet but I fully expect it to be lightyears ahead of the D7200 in terms of noise and low light performance, which is where i do a lot of my shooting. The ultimate goal is to have the D5 and the D850. I'll be selling my D7200.

I have a d800e, and the reality of it is that it works just fine. I am considering the d850 as an upgrade. My d800e is probably around 10 years old now and getting a bit dated from a features perspective. I like the idea of the illuminated buttons, the connectivity, the increased mp and Dynamic range. I like the battery life, I don't think I could live with the 300 or so battery life of the mirror less equivalent. Not so bothered about the flippy screen. I like that it will be totally familiar with it and just be able to pick it up and go. I have a vast range of f mount lenses so again it puts me off going down the mirror less route. It's kind of what you said, it probably like my d800e, but just a bit better.

If you just compare the 850 to the 7200 for landscape photography then I might agree that there might not be a great deal between the two in IDEAL situations. Apart from the much better dynamic range and far superior low light capabilities of the D850. But as soon as you look at moving objects such as sport, motorsport, wildlife especially birds in flight the 7200 isn’t comparable to the 850. The D850 is leaps and bounds in front with its much better focussing and tracking system. If you move over to mirrorless, perhaps the z8, you will still have huge files. It’s just the way things are going with ever better sensors. So no point in complaining about processing on your lap top. You’ll just have to invest in a faster lap top for any processing in the future as file sizes are never going to get any smaller. I loved your waterfall photos. But showing them on a KZbin video will never show up the better quality of the 850. For that you need a good computer screen and be able to zoom in to truly see the difference in resolution and definition. I have a D850 and an old D3S 12megapixels! At A4 size on a computer screen you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. But zoom into 100 percent and the difference jumps out at you.

My biggest negative on the D850, and other Nikon DSLRs, is the photo shooting menu banks. Since any changes to the settings are automatically recorded to the current bank, the feature is not very practical. User-defined mode setting on other camera brands are much more useful, as the setting are updated only by the menu system.

I agree! This “feature” has been an irritation ever since my first DSLR (D200) way back in 2005(?). In my opinion it makes the concept of memory presets virtually useless. This is never mentioned in reviews and I got to think it was just me being picky…

What does the 850 do that the Z6ii doesn’t? For me it focuses better in low light, fast and reliable. Outdoors the Z is fantastic and gives the 850 a run for its money but for critical work not so. The other thing I’ve noticed is it’s too small in the hand so the grip is essential. Build quality initially feels good but that’s actually not the case with many suffering issues. In conclusion, the 850 is built better both externally and internally with a recent tear down surprising people. Interestingly the 850 uses a custom designed Nikon sensor not manufactured by Sony. Nikon really did pull out all the stops with this camera which will explain its legendary reputation.

Hi, I had the D850 for some time now, and the D7500 and D750 before it, and I think is a wonderful camera. It has many useful features, like in-camera cropping, focus peaking, and focus shift. Being based in Warrington, I mainly do woodlands photography in the Peak District and Delamere forest. The D850 is ideal, even if it doesn't forgive you if you are not super accurate with the exposure. Been launched in 2017 it hasn't maybe got all the features of a modern mirrorless camera, but it is still an iconic piece of kit and if I have to change it for any reason I would buy another D850. Can,t really see a diff going from 16MP to 20Mp, ex in low light. Your Nikon is superb kit, however it,s close to 2k used, then glass? Also, weather sealed kit is important, next on my list 12MM to 40MM, Pro, of course weather sealed, you double to focal lenth for full frame eqiv, so 24- 80, moderate wide angle to portrait. Great video Ben. I have recently received my new D850, mainly for wildlife & nature, though landscape photography is appealing. I'm waiting for all the bugs or most of them to be ironed out before I move to mirrorless. Out of curiosity, what tripod do you use/recommend? Take care, David

I find those titles annoying a bit. It's Nikon D850! How can it be 'not good'? It's a ducking top-level camera from Nikon wtf

"Have you done everything that the camera can do?" Did Ansel Addams do everything a view camera can do? Is it even possible to do everything a camera can do? It's a tool like an artist's brush, did Rembrandt do everything the brush could do? I don't think it's possible.

You kept referring to one lens as a 12-24 which is an old DX crop sensor lens. I think you are actually referring to the 14-24 full frame lens.

Brilliant for mural sized photos , you really see them 45mp's come into play on printers higher than 300 dpi printers ,iv used iso 32 and f20 with 14-24 with nisi 150mm s6 filter adaptor (best filter holder for 14-24 lens) the mirrorless cameras are a bit camcorderish , iv used cameras for 40 years iv never needed 9 fps on d850 let alone 20 on z9 , people big up z lenses but in reality , after using z9s for 2 weeks up scotland i was left a bit dissapointed , my newer 24-70 fl and 70-200 fl lenses are best in class in 2024 ! Some people will sell sand to arabs ,

Ben. So if you had it to do over right now would you get the d850 or some other body? I don’t want to give up my Nikon glass.

Wondering whether to get a d780 or d850 to complement my d800. What do you think? I read the D780 has the same sensor as the z6 + better video than the d850 & great low light capabilities.

Depends what you want to do with it. I'm personally saving up for D850 and one of Z cameras(for video), but my main priority is D850 as I'm into photography more than videography. If you don't have a large budget, get the D780 as it's best of both worlds.

Is this camera much better than the D5600 or should I look else where … ?
@BenMcDonaldPhotography
@BenMcDonaldPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
I really couldn’t answer this, it all depends on what you’re looking for from a camera, yes the sensor is amazing on the 850 but style and type of photography demand different cameras.

So bizarre how your criticizing the absolutely amazing touch screen. I mean, WTF. Have you tried any of the Sony "touch" screens? They are absolute garbage in comparison. 5 years on and the D850 screen is still super hi res and extremely touch friendly. Other than that, great review. But my God, I couldnt beleive you dont like the screen. I mean are we using the same camera?
@BenMcDonaldPhotography
@BenMcDonaldPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, a lot of emotion in a comment, yeah never liked the back screen and honestly I don’t think I will, I don’t think touchscreens are great in the field, the D810 was so much more simple and in turn much easier to use. If the screen is going to do something, at least make it turn so you can see it in portrait. Thanks for the great review comment, cheers.

@@BenMcDonaldPhotography I dont know what it is that you see in that camera , that Sensor is utter trash , sure thing it has Dynamic range , but how much dynamic range you need to take a portrait , not a lot . For Landscape sure , you need it , but put a graduated Filter on the lens , there you go you have 3F stops more DR. Not to go too deep like lack of Off Camera Flash controls and such in the body , the body it self is not a problem. it is the sensor . Low light video poor , low light focusing poor , colors precise but ugly , color separation subpar, lens selection less then ideal , 70-200mm is more like 130mm when shooting close . The body it self is not that bad , has wifi , but the picture is what matters , and its just not giving me that something You like Nikon colors ?
