I can think of 13's proclamation to Tim Shaw in Woman Who Fell to Earth, The Doctor's offer to the Frog Universe in It Takes You Away and the first Dalek Confrontation in Resolution, the best Dalek story since Journey's End and a more proper finale to Series 11 than Battle of Avocados, as "I am the Doctor" moments. Then again, I grow on new Doctors, from Tenant to Matt Smth to Capaldi to Whittaker faster than most people it seems.

I was most dissapointed that 13 seems to have selectively forgotten huge parts of her history, 9-12 have all been driven by and haunted by decisions they have made over the centuries, most significantly of course ending the time war, this caused moments when the facade of confidence or righousness fell away completely, even if only for brief moments. 13 is far too naive and self assured for a being thousands of years old.

I think 13 is this way because she has just been reborn and is trying to figure out herself by acting different ways, she is currently experimenting with the naive and self assured type and is trying to move past her regrets to more focus on currently saving the world and figuring out herself. We wouldn't know if it's an act or if she's genuinely crazy... Her companions could be our surrogates, questioning her true values and motives amongst themselves and having to decide if they even want to be around her, just like we (the audience) would be. "and why would she need to deceive her friends in the context of the episode." "Need" to? Not what I'm saying. I meant "intentional" as in the WRITING of her character. If she was intentionally written to have chronic inconsistency, every interaction would be suspenseful... Because if someone as intelligent and capable as the Doctor kept randomly changing her mind about things (even her most important values) my eyes would be glued to her each time she's on screen! If a lack of distinction is the problem, then that's just one way to fix it.

We need to know this doctor's values where and where she draws the line, the 11th and 12th doctor can be seen as polar opposites by how they behave in each ones first season. If she acts differently in each of her adventures then how can she develope as a character and have a suitable arc.

In my last comment I clarified, making chronic inconsistency an intentional part of the WRITING of her character. But the success lies in the execution. Maybe sometimes she's kind and heroic, but randomly switches to cruel and cowardly. Making her so erratic could've been the START of an intriguing arc, while providing unlimited potential for unique and unpredictable interactions. Meanwhile her companions are our surrogates, debating her true values and motives while surviving their adventures. There could even be a reveal or new lore that comes out of it. The point is that no one has a good grasp of who this new Doctor is at first, and why she's so randomly inconsistent. The Doctor, just like her companions and the audience, will have to work it out along the way. I find it strange you didn't consider any of that. You just instantly wrote it off as not "good" because she'd be too 'unpredictable.' But being unpredictable isn't bad character writing so long as it's effectively integrated into the storytelling itself. Again, it's all in the execution. A truly unpredictable Doctor could have BOTH villains and companions shitting in their pants. The potential of which I find intriguing.

@@joejohnson3891 True, like for example, Twelve travelled with Bill, Nardole, and Missy, but the difference is that this was executed well. We had a few episodes with only Bill as the companion, but it was clearly established that Nardole was also there, and then there was the vault and stuff (and Missy was already established in series 8). Then we had Nardole travelling along too and we could get to know his character more, while we got stuff about Missy as well. Even though Missy and Nardole had comparatively less screentime, we were still able to grasp their characters and know who they were. If series 11 had done something like this- maybe had one of the companions travel for a while, while also establishing and making the existence of the other two known, and then brought them in... I feel like we would've gotten top know the characters better that way

I think a 4 person TARDIS team can work wonders, its just you have to introduce them gradually. thats why the Pond family & 9-Rose-Jack-Mickey (although it was only for one episode) worked so well. Build it up, and give them their own space to develop as characters.

Exactly. Unfortunately I purchased the series so I could see it (didn’t want to wait for the free release) just crossing my fingers and hoping that they would do something awesome with it. What you said Mark was my main problem with the series-the excessively prolonged confusion was just annoying. As someone else wrote here she never really had a true “I am the doctor” moment. I kept asking myself why are these people following her again? All the stories seem like they had real potential but fell incredibly short of it. Toothface, imo, was nearly as eww as the sleep crust monsters, with the whole frozen vase never really quite making sense with how it matters/meshed in the grand scheme w/the crazy electronic play-with-me forest air graphics & the ball of yarn electricity fiend all supposedly paving his way. Do we find out if Toothface came out of the vase? Did the electric ball come out of the vase? What was the whole freezing to touch thing & why...the whole story was poorly explained, which could pretty much be said for most of the stories in the season. Even when I was interested they seem to go off on tangents that lost me. Just really poor writing & too much distancing her from doctors past. I have no problem with a Time Lord regenerating into whatever gender. They stepped away from the Time Lord lore where females could only regenerate into females a long long time ago & as a fan I didn’t have any issue with that I just saw it as a possible evolution as all things evolve. Missy made the twists interesting. Matter of fact I probably would’ve had less of a time enjoying this if Missy had been the new Doctor as wacky as that sounds. Fact is, all of the stories were disconnected, whereas in the past the tales had clever threads that brought things together, like the writer had thought the entire series through (for all of the years they were ever going to write) instead of just cranking out episodes. When you build on previous stories and connect things it just makes things flow and you can think back in your head “Oh that’s where that came from!I see where you’re headed” in an episode it just makes the whole thing more interesting. And do not get me started with her ship design...hope she isn’t going be forced to suffer that bleh interior Tardis decor for the whole of 2020.

The fact that they move that way seems to rob the TARDIS of dignity and make it toy-like. I much preferred them as coral-like arches. However I do really like the big hexagonal panels with their overlapping/intermeshed spoke shapes, some seemingly suspended disconnected. That adds an apt mystery: the TARDIS is no simple flat-walled square room! About the big 'time crystal' ccentral console core.. I'm not convinced. I find it a bit hokey. How many mystic crystals have we seen? Too old/samey! The console seems pleasing enough, having a continuity-with-variation with all that have gone before since Eccleston's. With its eccentric mic of chunky, clunky steampunk/dieselpunk levers, and a footpedal or so, it seems functional while eclectic. But what's with the egg-timer? If only that was a bit more elaborate and Time-Lord-teched-up, I'd like it better. Overall? I find the new interior too dark. It doesn't seem to light up. Other recent interiors could be dark but with distant lights, and could light up revealing the different levels and spaces. This one is too anonymous, and characterless, for my taste. No other rooms in the (vast, rambling) TARDIS architecture have been shown. Surely the three companions need somewhere to rest and eat, and would want to explore, given such an opportunity? I'm not looking for a glut of gratuitous indulgence, but a little hint that there is so much more, and glimpses now and then, would be nice. Maybe season 12 will show us more of the TARDIS interior, or a further re-design?

Series 12 seems to be an upswing for Chibnall as a showrunner, so far. I have been enjoying it, it's much less ham-fisted with its rhetoric, much more in line with what a Doctor Who story arc should be. And then there's the events of Fugitive of the Judoon...

Here is an immediate fix for the spider plotline. Keep the toxic waste bit but have them be controlled by arakeen a spider woman trying to take over the world. Have there be some comments indicating that she and the doctor have met before and she was sealed in a cavern on earth for trying to take over till some new construction busted her out. A dd a comment on how arakeen sounds like arachne and a line about how "you humans tend to remember stuff even if improperly and add gods for some reason." There is a fix and while using concepts that have been used before it opens floodgates to potential stories incorporating mythology, adds in a future overarching storyline or reaccuring villain and time travel shenanigans by in a future season have the doctor defeat her the first time. all while keeping the eco message cibnall was trying for. Anything would be more interesting than giant spiders attacking because reasons.

How to improve for series 12 (IMO) 1. Reduce the tardis team 2. Have great new & old monsters 2.5. Have the Daleks in their proper casing (chibnall has at least proved he can write the Daleks as calculating & deadly villains again) 3. Have the plot & character drama link together 4. Challenge the doctor with high stakes stories 5. Stop using the word "fam" 6. Unless it's woven into the story, stop referring to politics in episode (looking at you trump knock off & unit brexit joke) 7. Don't over explain everything & show, don't tell. 8. Make episodes scary 9. Have a direction for where the series is going 10. Don't kill Graham!

Just an idiot with a box, who is kind and tries to save people, because this is the right thing to do. The Doctor is the hero, who doesn't understand how s/he ended up as one. Surprised and amazed how s/he defeated every enemy s/he encountered. Who didn’t wish to become the Doctor, but who is fully aware of what it means. Like in his speech to akhaten: "I saw the birth of the universe and I watched as time ran out, moment by moment, until nothing remained. No time. No space. Just me." The Doctor should be confident, she should know what she is capable of, what she can do and what she has done in the past. And she should be scared because of that. Scared of herself, scared of what she might become, scared because of all the dangers of the universe. Scared, that she is not enough to stop the evil, that she will not live up to the expectations. Her story with the doctor is over and I feel that bringing her back would be wrong and ruin that arc. BUT... I would totaly watch a spin off about what she does when the doctor isn't around, and she could meet captain Jack and it would be hilarious. Also she could maybe meet Clara and convince her to stay dead. Or maybe not, no one likes Clara anyway. Whatever.

Michel De Bruyn I wouldn't generalise people's opinions like that, because I for one hated River but love Thirteen. Jodie's Doctor has plenty of room for improvement (mainly in that she's way too placid when dealing with baddies) but she's nowhere near as much of an absolute trainwreck as people are pretending; the same goes for S11 as a whole. The big problem I had with River was that she was supposed to serve as a foil/romantic interest for Eleven, but the actors themselves had no chemistry; as a result, she came off to me as more of a nuisance than anything else whenever she was on the screen. However, I DID think she bounced off of Twelve very well in their one episode together, and I've heard that her popularity has been bolstered hugely by her Big Finish series.

I think the other crucial problem with Whittaker's Doctor is that she had no character development at all throughout Series 11. Capaldi's Doctor went through changes in each of his seasons as he encountered old enemies and lost companions, having real development throughout. However, Whittaker hasn't changed at all from the beginning of the series (The Woman Who Fell To Earth) to the end (Resolution), still essentially acting exactly the same each week with no development whatsoever.

@E C I agree. Chibnall has talked about bringing on making the show new and fresh, including this Doctor. The childlike-enthusiasm, manic energy and bubliness were already done so well by Ten and Eleven. There is little she adds as her own incarnation of the Doctor in terms of distinctive traits that define her Doctor. Her interactions with her companions are not that memorable or engaging. It’s just mainly consists of calling them ‘fam’, answering their questions, encouraging them at times and gaining reassurance from them. That is really is. There is little spark in their relationship. I’m not convinced of their conviction in travelling with the Doctor. Only Graham’s is the most believable. Yaz wanted to escape from her family but unlike Martha, who in her first episode we saw the constant bickering and dynamics of her family, we don’t see much of Yaz’s family driving her mad. It is told through the script, but not shown on screen. Thirteen indeed has had little to challenge her. She has not been put in a desperate situation where her wit and intellect is challenged. She has not been challenged by her companions very much and perhaps because of that, I don’t really see significant growth in their bonds. They are all fairly compliant with her. Meanwhile Rose disagreed with Nine in many ways (the Earth dying and human mortality in ‘End of the World’, disagreeing with recycling bodies for the Gwelf in ‘The Unquiet Dead’, calling his ruthlessness out in ‘Dalek’, major argument in ‘Father’s Day and the Doctor sending her home in ‘The Parting of the Ways’. Amy’s faith in her childhood hero is tested a lot and in her second episode she makes a decision for him without his knowledge that almost kicks her out of travelling with him. Martha and Ten’s relationship had a bit of tension, due to the former feeling like she is being played second fiddle to Rose. Donna called out Ten’s actions all the time. Eleven was suspicious of Clara, Canada confronting him about being a ‘ghost’ and wanting to treated like her own individual. Twelve and Clara- lots of tension there. Bill was discomforted with Twelve’s detachment to death and the possibly he may have killed. All these companions had dynamic relationships that had grown through challenging one another. With 4 different perspectives in TEAMTardis, I would have expected more butting heads due to 4 vastly different perspectives.There are also not enough moments in challenging her morality- which the audience pick up way more than the companions.

And I think her character was set up to have conflicted feelings about revenge/retribution/killing, but the writers didn't know how to incorporate that so they just shrugged their shoulders and shat on the page. Edit: to back up my point on her character struggle and the series theme- she gets Mad over Shaw getting pushed, she doesn't want to see Kerblam boy get killed despite his misdeeds, time traveling racist doesn't get killed but sent back in time, spiders not killed just imprisoned, etc. She should have grappled with these "deaths" in the last 2 episodes. She's a killer who doesn't kill. She doesn't kill, but let's them die or let's them be tortured. Is she any better for this? They never really capitalize on the theme.

I haven't watched all the episodes yet, but I think the loss of Murray Gold and his awesome music plays a very big role in the decaying of the series. Let's face it: there have always been badly written episodes, inconsistent characters and poorly justified storylines, but the magical atmosphere conveyed mostly through the soundtrack usually brought the spectator not to focus on those flaws and to get transported by the flow of the show. Now I feel the music doesn't help anymore and thus all the flaws are easier to see and harder to forgive, and the emotional link between us and the characters results damaged. Only this is difficult t notice because it mostly affects our subconscious, so at the end of each episode we have the lingering sensation that it was bad but we automatically blame the writing, completely oblivious of the role the soundtrack played in our entertainment.

I'm dyspraxic myself, and I found it so patronising. It became a joke in my house to shout 'dyspraxia!' whenever he did anything odd or goofy. murgul morgul I personally think the problem lies in Chipnal only having done “filler episodes” in the past. He has done one offs that aren’t crucial to the overarching plot and he’s still running the show like that. He approached the full season as a collection of stories instead of a coherent story with a overarching storyline. To much focus on different monsters and settings every episode and to little on the actual characters that are the only stable thing. I think he got overwhelmed with the actual scope of stories he was supposed to stich together and now we got this mess.

I thought Capaldi was actually great in the end. When the season first started with him, i didn't like him at all at first, but some great writing, and the emotions he provided really moved me during some episodes and in the end, i loved him as the Doctor. With Jodie though and the writing from the staff. It seemed that the show was trying to shove every day issues down our throats. For many, they tune into TV to forget about the day and the worries of the world, and to get lost in a fantasy world. I watched the first few episodes. Jodie never seemed to get either portray the role as her own, or was not written in a clear way and instead kept borrowing from the personalities of other Doctors.

I think it would've been hilarious if, when Capaldi regenerated, he took Donna's form. They could sell that idea through the meta-crisis or whatever that created DoctorDonna or something. I'm not totally opposed to a female Doctor (other than this has never been a thing until the new series and I will never buy that cross-gender regeneration has always been a thing, we just never saw it before), I just don't think this one is any good.

Each Dr needs their own thing. Desperate character - Tennant definitely was the high point. She seemed she was Just copying other Drs especially Matt Smith. I think they focused too much on her being a woman, rather than being an individual DR. They should have just stuck to it, it's not like the show is good of women and Rose, Martha, Donna, even Clara are strong women, not just 'companions. I think they stuffed it, I couldn't even watch all the season and I LOVE the Dr. Sad.

For me I never knew why I enjoyed the Doctor so much until I realized what was missing from Jodie; Every Doctor has the absolute ability to steal a scene, even if it’s not focused on them. The Doctor is always the most interesting character in any scene, and it’s always so fun to see. Jodie’s acting and/or characterization fell flat for me. In every seen, minus her conversation with King James in witchfinders, I was hardly paying attention to her performance. Every other character, no matter how minor or badly written was more interesting to watch than the Doctor, and that’s a bad thing. The Doctor should steal every, or most scenes they are in with great acting and good characterization, both of which Jodie and her Doctor sincerely lacked. (P.S. spare the spoilers for series 12 please c:)

MagicStealth, that is exactly right. Exactly! As written and performed in these Chibnal stories, the Doctor is. not. interesting. Or witty. Or insightful. Or passionate on any level below about a quarter inch of depth. A lot of this has to do, IMO, with the deliberate jettisoning of every connection to the earlier Doctors. She's a blank slate, and so far nothing arresting has been written there. One lives in hope, however.

The writing was awful and there was never a moment for me of "that's The Doctor" like there was with all the other modern Doctors. Nine was "my Doctor". The one I saw first. He was the Doctor from the get go, he was the first Doctor I saw and I accepted the character straight away (and got into the classic series later). Ten was when he fought the sycorax in his borrowed pyjamas despite my doubts up to that point. Donna was when she was the DoctorDonna and popped up from behind that console spouting technobabble at 1,000 miles per hour while beating the Daleks. Eleven was when he called the Atraxi back and threatened them. Twelve was in his episode when they were in the Dalek and it was grim but yeah. (Capaldi got a lot of crap writing but still managed to pull the role off because it wasn't as awful as this last series' writing.) Thirteen never had one of those moments. Sh never had a character of her own either as you said. Chibnall sucks and I'm out until we get a new showrunner and good writers. If Whittaker is still around maybe she'll be the Doctor then. I was rooting for her I wanted her to be the Doctor but she just wasn't and I think that's definitely the writing's fault because she is a good actress. I don't think any of the others could have been the Doctor either if they'd started with this drivel. can we have RTD back now? Please! It all started going down hill after he left.

No, "why" was a problem for me with GBusters chiefly because: you had an, ahem, 'flamboyant' (and demonstrably unsuitable) director/co-writer harbouring trite 'daddy issues' that detrimentally pervaded his work, plus a script fashioned to compliment his vapid, creatively-ossifying politics and feminist fetishes, etc, etc. And all to the alienation of GB fans and anyone who values good ol' escapist entertainment of course. ^Again the parallels with GB2016 and current 'Who are as startling as they are sobering....though to be fair Chibnall doesn't dress like a pretentious knob like Paul Feig so he's got that in his favour at least. ;)

I really love seeing the doctor shift and change emotionally and personally. Like with the 9th doctor, in the beginning he was kind of just a silly person who wasn't really attached to any human in particular, not even Rose, but did of course still want to save them when possible. But later on in the season he almost kills Rose with the Dalek and you see his attatchment to her drastically shift from someone who just sees her as a fun companion to travel with to someone who feels more for her. And when we see him with the Dalek in the cage we see his rage and hatred emerge. Even 10 turns from a fun loving and silly character to a man with a hard edge and almost a depressed man. The doctor losing one of the most important people to him really changed him almost immediately. It resonated with me and people like me who have lost people and have changed because of that. For the first time in the reboot we see the doctor loose one of his companions, but it wasn't just that, Rose was someone he fell in love with. The 11th doctor was someone I had to learn to love actually. Seeing him go from such a deep and impactful character to a doctor who dipped fish sticks in custard and was just completely silly all around was so hard for me. But over time you see him become more than that. He becomes more serious and when he loses Amy Pond he is beyond disappointed and alone. It was almost as if he didn't care about anybody else just in case he would grow attached again and then have to see them die or leave yet again. The doctor was tired and alone. But then he became silly again, but this time with a new edge to him that really helped define his character after he began traveling with Clara again. And finally the 12th doctor. He has changed the most I would say. He was the most hard doctor, the doctor who was impacted by his actions more than the others, the doctor that remembered what he did in the time war most of all. He did his best to be kind and still was always haunted by his memories. But he realised that love will always win over fear and that trying to be a good person is what really matters. I can't even break down all of the 12th doctor's personality because there is just so much. But that's what made seeing the doctor change from one person to another so fascinating; you get to see a new person each time and how the story impacts their views on the world. The 13th doctor is really just one kind of person, one kind of personality. The thing about being a very old and very complex person like the doctor is you would have more than just one way of viewing the world. I don't mind the doctor being silly at all, in fact I enjoy it, but when that's all they are then I feel like I'm watching a kids show or something. The doctor has been alive thousands of years, long enough to abandon the silliness every once in awhile. Even when she seems to try and be serious or have a hard edge to her, it comes off as unsuccessful. Who knows, maybe she'll change into a more complex character as the series goes on. But so far, frankly I'm just kinda bored.

What stands out to me about 13's character is that she always makes an effort to be polite and kind in how she speaks to people, and is bluntly honest, yet gentle in a way that previous Doctors wouldn't be. She's always adding "please" and "sorry" and being genuinely friendly with everyone. Even when she resents someone, she'll say something like "I haven't warmed to him" or tell them plainly to their face exactly what they've done to offend her. I see this as her honouring 12's last words, which were directed at her. The angry old man who hated everybody wanted to be kinder. 13's personality is the natural result of that.

Hiccup Hufflepuff that's a really lovely and astute observation, I like that. She is polite. I feel like that actually links really well to what I saw emerged as one of her defining traits: she is quick to righteous anger, particularly against exploitative people or unkind individuals, but without really shouting. I felt the Smith-like goofiness she was sometimes given sounded like she was speaking another character's lines. But she was great at calling out the actions of others. Not in an intense Capaldi way or a gallant Tennant way, but in a strident, firm manner. She's very polite until you cross somebody. Then she gets mad. Also yay Hufflepuff! #PuffPride #BadgersUnite

As someone who's always wanted to see a female Doctor, I can say that in my personal opinion, this was nothing more than a pandering mess that cared more about #Feminism than any sort of story telling or internal consistency. Just like every other modern show or movie with a Female lead, the writers/directors/whoever thinks they can just leave it at that and not worry about the story, the characters, et cetera, which is why all of them (The new Ghostbusters movie, the new StarWars movies, Captain Marvel, just to name a few) turn out so badly and long term fans hate them. And then makers shout "SEXIST!" at everyone who doesn't like it while ignoring any and all actual criticism and acting like they invented the concept of a woman in a leading role despite the fact that there are dozens of examples of female protagonists in TV, film, videogames, et cetera, WITH ACTUAL COMPETENT STORY TELLING AND CHARACTERS THAT DON'T FEEL LIKE CARDBOARD CUT-OUTS RANGING DECADES INTO THE PAST. That aside, pretty decent review. Solid 8 out of 10. Would watch again. (Your review, not the show.)

What's worst is that I actually really like Thirteen in the Woman Who Fell. She felt like the perfect continuation for the Doctor's overarching arc of redemption after the Last Time War. Nine was traumatized, Ten was filled with guilt, Eleven was trying to forget, Twelve was taking his responsabilities and now Thirteen was healing, taking a brighter, more optimistic outlook to her own life. I was pumped for that lighter version of the Doctor, but it feels that they didn't trust their own idea and quickly, it seemed that Thirteen was just as somber as the others before her and she never really developed her own unique twist on the character. She was the Doctor, for sure, but she failed to be her own Doctor.

I didnt really leave with a feeling that I don't know who the Doctor is now. I left with the feeling that I dont like who the Doctor is now. Her personality IS as you described, a combination of character traits present in previous doctors. But it also includes qualities I avoid in real life. I avoid rude people who don't know boundaries in real life. And before someone says it, yes I'm aware that previous doctors have also behaved in rude ways, some more than others. But with those doctors I always felt those character traits were meant to make them more interesting and, maybe, appear more alien. The companions were often used to correct that rude behavior, thus presenting an experience where we got to watch the relationship between alien and human as they affect each other and change each other. This doctor apparently already knows how to behave "properly" and very much enjoys teaching other humans how they might be better, if only they would open their minds to her brilliant insights. This is not the reason I watch Doctor Who.

Her character was all over the place. I think her TARDIS is actually a pretty good symbol. Daniel Fox not saying that it doesn’t, I just think people rely too heavy on it to bang on about how it’s a failing show. I agree Doctor Who in its current form is far from perfect (even good for that matter) but offering constructive criticism helps remind us that the show has the potential to be good.

What really pisses me off is that all the potential for a brilliant TARDIS team was here, Chibnall just introduced them all too quickly. They should’ve joined the TARDIS one by one (with Graham being the only ‘full-time’ companion) with maybe a full team being established by Resolution, once we’d got to know Ryan, Yaz and Graham one by one. There were even eps where it would’ve been natural as Ryan/Yaz’s first adventure (Rosa and Demons of the Punjab come to mind). Jodie Whittaker is a brilliant actress who’s been given frankly abysmal stuff to work with. A female doctor won’t be tried again for another few reincarnations because of Chibnall’s shitty writing and character building and I don’t think I can ever forgive him for that.

You have a valid point there. All the previous TARDIS teams in NewWho have been introduced gradually. We had Rose for 8 episodes because we were introduced to Captain Jack. By the time Mickey joined, we already had a lot of screen time with him. We had 5 episodes with Amy before Rory joined in. Nardole didn't need as much as character development, so it was fine for Bill to have more screen time. Much of the dialogue the Series 11 companions had is exposition and saying the obvious/repeating what was said before. Aside from Graham, they lacked the engagement of previous companions, with the constant sharing of screen time making it even worse.

I think the biggest departure from previous series was the relationship of the doctor to her friends (companions). The companions have been more independent characters and there was often a good deal of tension between a companion and his/her Doctor Who. This tension allowed the characters personalities to show through. Jodi Whitaker's friends were merely lap dogs. There's more to companionship than loyalty and obedience.

I think it would be really interesting to see the doctor talk to someone from her past. The show seems like it's in a slightly different universe to all of the other doctors and it doesn't feel like she's the same person, just in someone else's body, it feels like she's a different person all together. Maybe it would seem a bit more connected if you could see the doctor interacting with River Song or someone like that.

It is not a special place where exciting things happen, or very dramatic scenes, or hilarious moments... Chibnall doesn't give a shit about this wonderful place. I think the only long scene we saw there was the beginning of Kerblam.

Although I love the TARDIS and TARDIS-centric episodes, I'm kinda glad it wasn't seen as much in this series just from its interior design alone. The lighting and colours in it were so dark and saturated it was almost painful to look at after a while. And the crystals just seem so out of place in my opinion. The console itself being a crystal was cool, but having them all over the room seemed really over the top.

Series 5 and 8 were very weak IMO. I love Capaldi but his first series was pretty poor. I enjoyed this series, wasn't the best, wasn't even close to the worst. With any new Doctor is usually takes a series to iron out the problems. That's excluding a few Doctors though (ie. Tom, Christopher, etc.)

The 2nd episode of season 5 was totally forgettable(I actually forgot about it untill I watched it the other day). I thought the rest of the episodes were at least average and I really liked the dream lord episode. The penultimate episode had a 10/10 cliffhanger but the finale was just atrocious. The way the doctor escaped the pandorica was cheap.

Doctor Who has written some very good, very strong female characters. Donna, Clara, the Prime Minister, Missy and even Queen Elizabeth. They just didn't do it here.

Actually, the “misconstrued villains” plot line happened FOUR episodes in a row, not three, since Kerblam also centred around it too; you get the call for help assumed to be from human workers, then the robots start killing - so once you realise that the higher-up staff are actually just as confused about the culprit as the main characters (so it’s not a “secret, cruel corporate plan executed by corrupt businessmen” conspiracy), you think it’s a typical “AI turns on humans and starts murdering” story. Only then the end reveals that the AI/machine was the one asking for help and all of the bad actions were caused by the real bad guy an extremist/activist/terrorist manipulating the machine to his own ends. This is part of the reason I think the sci-fi theme felt weak in many episodes: they introduce a “villain” that - while not always flashy - is at least somewhat sci-fi, but then once they reveal the misunderstanding the plot always shows that the real villain(s) were the humans all along. Arachnids in the UK: the spiders are only berserk because they’re disoriented by their growth spurt; the real villains are the “slimy corporate executives” who decided to unsustainably dump toxic waste - where the (supposed to be) dead spiders were also dumped - to cut costs. Demons of the Punjab: the mysterious alien assassins showing up around people who die are actually mourners/mortuary witnesses paying respects to those who die alone; the real villain was the fiancé’s brother who sold him out and murdered him. Kerblam: Makes you think it’s an advanced futuristic AI murdering workers in an uprising against humans, or a corrupt corporate scheme where higher-ups are using the machines to do so, but the managers are actually trying to solve the disappearances/murders and the AI is asking for help. The real villain is the human who is trying to use the machine to set up what is essentially a terrorist attack to prove an anti-AI point. It Takes You Away: The sentient universe lulling people to trap them there is just lonely, and the monster in the woods is just a sound recording. There isn’t really an outright villain here, but the father does leave his blind daughter alone for long enough to make her think he’s gone missing, plants the speakers in the forest and lies to her about a monster - outright terrifying her into isolating herself in the house - to keep her from going outside. It’s fine to explore emotional themes, but they spend so much time sidelining fake-out sci-fi villains - in favour of human villains creating conflicts that are mostly either interpersonal or moral - that they replace most of the sci-fi conflicts entirely. You can find interpersonal/moral issues about coping as a single dad, unethical dumping affecting the environment, family tensions and fratricide in dramas and soap operas. Even with the context of the Partition of Demons of the Punjab being behind the brothers’ conflict, you could still easily do that in a historical drama. They’re actively swapping out sci-fi elements in the story for human events and human drama conflicts. Obviously, Doctor Who has still showed plots of interpersonal drama or normal human conflict, and sci-fi/historical stories where humans were part of the problem, previously (think the human passengers pointing fingers and arguing in Midnight, for example; the monster was a large element but so was the tension between the panicking passengers who exacerbated the aggression and turned on the Doctor. For drama, think of all of the everyday human drama that’s happened with the companions: Rose and Mickey, Clara and Danny Pink. Even Classic Who had historical stories centred around companies or politicians as villains, like The Green Death or Enemy of the World. Historical stories from Hartnell’s era were mostly consisting of human issues, too.) However, the problem with series 11 is that this case happens almost more than the sci-fi stories themselves, and the episodes actively set-up sci-fi plots and characters as potential stories, only to actively red-herring or throw them away mid-episode in favour of mainly human-centric plots instead. They’re actively throwing away the major sci-fi elements in an episode ON SCREEN.

I originally thought it was kind of clever to do the _'humans are the real monsters'_ kind of thing in Rosa, because that was the first episode in a long time (possibly the entirety of New Who) not to feature a non-human antagonist of some kind. But then when they do it again and again in every episode, it quickly becomes a tired old trope. I think the reason they used it in so many other episodes is for the same reason they did so with Rosa: they want to shine a light on real-world issues in the hopes of actually changing the world. Arachnids is a ripped-from-the-headlines story about a certain loud-mouthed corrupt politician. Tsuranga tried way too hard to be a science lesson and failed miserably, but also managed to be a subtle jab against the defunding of public healthcare. Punjab has a plot tied together by post-colonial guilt, along with the additional morality tale of scary looking aliens turning out to be harmless, thus encouraging the audience to challenge their xenophobia. Kerblam is... I dunno. It feels like a morality tale that forgot to have a moral, except perhaps 'the robots will take your jobs, and that's okay!' Witchfinders, while it does feature a monster that is actually monstrous for once, spends much more of its screen time focusing on the evils of its human characters, and using the witch trials to frame its _ever so brave_ moral stance that sexism is in fact A Bad Thing. They lay off it a bit for the final few episodes, but even Resolution just _has to_ make that unneeded gripe about how humans have overcome many things throughout history, _including the worst of their own people!_ So, given how the early seasons established the Doctor as someone who _likes humans,_ it leaves a bad taste in your mouth when season 11 spends half its time saying _'Actually no. Humans aren't good. We need to be better!'_ - in addition to all the other ways it's meddled with the formula. Don't even get me started on the thirteenth Doctor's complete inability to be intimidating, or even interesting for that matter. Not only is it detrimental to the show for all the reasons outlined above. I think the only real reason they did it was the external requirement to uphold social justice. I could be reading way too much into this, but given the precedent set by Rosa, it's not hard to imagine the Doctor Who team being Hell Bent on _'reflecting the times we live in',_ and using their enormous audience to _'create positive change in the world'._ I'm paraphrasing, but not by much. The second part is something the main cast have all discussed in interviews. And the first is pretty much verbatim from Chris Chibnall. This is why I say the focus on social issues has brought down the quality of the show. It's not "political correctness" - it's something far more insidious than that. This is *_issues-oriented storytelling._* And rather than build up a fanbase of people who like that kind of thing (it can be done well, to be fair - just look at the success of shows like Steven Universe.) the team behind this have repurposed an existing show, and then gotten cross with the audience for not conforming. And if I can get on my moral high horse for just a moment, I'd like to say it's a _huge_ disservice to the first female Doctor to have her associated with this mediocrity. Not only that, but her portrayal has only gone and reinforced a stereotypical notion that _'HAHA a woman can't play the Doctor without being a self-righteous feminist!'_ What's more is that it often fails at its stated goal. Perhaps because they can't fully commit to the idea of a female-led show, the Doctor and Yaz are both woefully underdeveloped as characters, with the latter offering little more to the show than her role as a token minority. They keep introducing gay characters, only to swiftly kill them off. And the two characters who fans actually want to be gay (the Doctor and Yaz) will probably never go beyond their vague hints at flirting with each other. And the Doctor wore a rainbow coloured scarf one time. This is called queerbaiting, and queer people _hate_ it. So, with that being said, I'm not sure who this show is for now, except perhaps well-meaning liberal types who want _feel_ like they're doing the right thing, because they can now watch a show where the main character is a _white woman_ instead of a white man (so inspiring!), and feel totally vindicated for their one-dimensional approach to social justice.

Agreed. I read the script of the first episode yesterday, and I was amazed to find that much the Doctor's character is actually hard-wired into the words she's given! The Doctor is written in such a way that she can only really come across across as a scatter-brained lightweight, with hardly any gravitas at all. She's. Also. Given. Breathless. Soundbites. To. Say. Much. Too. Often... Why don't they give her actual *sentences* to speak more often? Poor woman doesn't stand much of a chance with material like that.

Bad writing and she is a terrible actress for the role - like with music some artist can't sing certain songs, they just don't work with them and with acting it's the same thing, she shouldn't have been given the role because she can't do it, you can see it from episode 1 of hers just like you can see from the moment someone opens their mouth whether or not they'd be capable of taking on a certain song.

What went wrong was the writing. If you look at the new writers Chibnal brought in they have, for the most part, two things they share. 1. A lack of previous experience writing for television. 2. They had never written Doctor Who before. Another thing they all either share or are noted for- 1. writing young adult fiction. 2. playwrights known for using social issues as their subject matter. And some of them are both. So it is perhaps not surprising that the result was a series which put the social issues front and centre, showed a lack of experience in how to structure television and narrative over a series and in the concept of show don't tell, and did not have a handle or direction for how to write the Doctor other than generic surface quirky Doctor. And on top of all that is what is clearly a deliberate choice to move the Doctor to a secondary role in narratives, more akin to the 1st Doctor as a facilitator of adventures and moral guide for the companions (compare Clara about to shoot Missy and 12 takes her place to save her the burden of a killing on her soul to 13 merely making Grahame know where she stands if he does kill toothface- 12 acts taking responsibility for Clara, 13 gives a moral direction but does nothing). And this is because the story is no longer about the Doctor, its about adventures with the Doctor. The narrative itself is now all about the social issue of the week. This choice to have an issue of the week in place of a monster of the week is another deliberate change, one which explains why the villains are either not villains, or very poor ones when they are. The monster and the characters reactions to it are not what is being explored, but rather whatever that weeks social issue is. To such an extent that you can take an episode like Demons, remove not only the aliens from the plot, but the Doctor and companions too, and the story would remain the same. The issue takes such importance that the main cast and the alien are surplus to narrative requirements. Conversely if you leave everything else and take out the social issue you'd have nothing left. Its all there is. Compare that to Empress of Mars, which also has a social issue underpinning it- Brexit- which is why at the end its linked to the classic Who Peladon episodes, which are widely known to have been about the UK entry in to the European Common Market, the two stories bookend the UK's time in the EU. But you can not only watch the episode fine (or the Peladon ones) and not know that, you could take the few more directing references out and still be left with an entertaining sci-fi romp. You can't do that with much of series 11 because the social issue is the main story. Its not under the surface, not allegorical, not metaphorical, its just front and centre in your face the main thing. If you take it out there is no story left so weak are the sci-fi premises and characters the issues are hung upon. The manner in which they have tried to achieve moving the Doctor down a few pegs of importance to the stories has spectacularly backfired however as it makes 13 seem slower, less smart, less observant (Woman Who Fell, Kerblaam, Witchfinders, Resolution), less confident, lacking the Doctors characteristic arrogance, with less bravado, less confrontation and less -or no- glimpses to a darker dangerous aspect of the character (every single episode) and more needy than her male predecessors requiring confirmation from those around her for her actions (Arachnids, Kerblaam, Resolution) and with no clear moral compass or direction throughout the entire series. None of which there is any good reason for save the only way they could think of to make the Doctor not be front and centre was apparently to make her dumber. When you combine that with giving her no real conflict, either internal or external and a bunch of yes men for companions and no adversaries worth the name you have the unfocused, morally dubious social issue focused mess that is series 11 and the 13th Doctor. Its a travesty above all else that the 1st female Doctor should be written this way.

I wish I had the time to do justice to this comment with a proper reply (I've already written an essay in these comments) but I will at least give you the TL;DR version: The issues-oriented storytelling is severely undermining the quality of the show. At least half of the episodes in season 11 are ones where humans are the real monsters, and/or framed as some kind of morality tale. The reason they do this is probably due to some requirement of upholding social justice, whether set by themselves or by the BBC. It a lot of the time, the show even fails to follow its own lead on social justice. The fact the women in the main cast are so devoid of character development, the queerbaiting between the Doctor and Yaz (£10 says they will never kiss on-screen), and the suspicious number of redshirts who happen to be gay are all clear symptoms of this. And rather than create a new show with a focus on social justice (it could have even been a Doctor Who spinoff - I'd have been far more lenient), they've repurposed the show proper, in the hopes that its audience would follow suit. It will come back to bite them in the arse. Even social justice activists will abandon the show if it doesn't continually raise the bar.

Not to mention it makes it really dated. You can look back at old episodes, and ignore restraints of the time, such as costumes, special effects, and so on, and they feel timeless. You can watch them comfortably, because they aren't rooted in a specific time. Ryan and Yaz going on about being more likely to be pulled over than white mates makes it a very dated 2010's series. When I watched it, I swear he was quoting a video I'd seen about it on YT. Word for word. In a couple of decades where this isn't a thing, people won't be able to watch it and relate. It will be set in time, which is a shame that it comes after the New Who series' which you can watch nearly 2 decades later with no problem.

With Doctors 9 through 12 we get to know exactly what kind of Doctor these characters are within the first few episodes of their first series. Some of them we get to know them completely within the first episode. With 13 I still don't know what she is, but she doesn't even feel like the Doctor yet. The show didn't even feel like Doctor Who after the premier until Kablam, and the series was almost over by then.

Very definitely! It can be a useful technique to convey dramatic tension but Jodie overdoes it to the point where it just reads as a perpetual state of anxiety and undermines her character's authority. The Doctor is the last person who should be getting anxious because that's how the audience knows when the stakes are actually getting high. It's hard to accept anyone would allow the Doctor to control any situation if she can't even control her own psychological and physiological state. The companions are the ones who should be conveying the majority of the dramatic tension on the way to the climax of the story allowing the Doctor to be assured and in control, mostly. Then there's this "socially awkward" nonsense. An extraterrestrial being, hundreds of years old, travels through time and space, meets all manner of beings and cultures is still socially awkward? That's not a character trait, it's an ill-informed affectation which further undermines the Doctor's authority.

I really want this to be a learning season for them and that they understand where they went right and wrong. But I don't know if she will stick around for her doctor to get her own identity. Since she and chibnal said 11 episodes per year was unreasonable, and when I've heard her speak about the show. It's so focused on her being a female doctor. But I don't care about that, I just want to know what kind of doctor she is and keep a certain amount of consistency. She could certainly change throughout her tenure. Smith and Capaldi especially had some drastic shifts during the mid point of their run, but you knew what made them tik focusing on very different aspects and particular way of looking at the world. But while she has the typical doctor traits of being resourceful, thinking ahead instead of just reacting for the most part, is able to both be kind and arrogant depending on who she talks to. But we see her for the most part through the eyes of the companions. I don't need a heaven sent but one episode that would focus on her adjusting to finding out who she is now. Not a deliberate journey of self discovery, but the best doctor moments come from you seeing everything from the doctors perspective you have no idea how a new doctor will handle a certain unbeatable situation. And how the doctor then wins becomes a template for them that shows of their strengths. Nitpick, her TARDIS seems more like it's something from Krypton then Gallifrey, and the soundtrack was terrible this year. It feels wrong to not go orchestral, it doesn't sound like doctor who to me without it.

The simple fact is new who has been better until this year where I literally can't think of a single scene that I can't wait to rewatch. 9-12 doctor would have bad episodes but often have 1 scene that was written in a way that you can rewatch it several times and see new layers. This was all surface level writing and it had this weird chip on it's shoulder seemingly forgetting the people who watch it are already on their side and it's not getting new viewers by bashing them.

Well said, this season was a let down. If you're looking for idea's there's no harm in reviewing past seasons, a little tweaking here and there could give it a much more desired effect. I would however suggest that the writer's could and should take on board the views of the fans for which this programme is intended for.

I'll be honest, I stopped watching the series halfway through. It wasn't bad, per se, there was wasn't anything there that was interesting or engaging. None of the characters grabbed me (all of the companions are criminally underdeveloped, something I chalk up to there being 3 of them right off the bat, whereas previous doctors got more or less a season to develop their relationship with a singular companion before you started seeing consistent extras coming along for the ride); the episodes felt disjointed, low-payoff, and lacking any sense of real stakes. As for it being overly progressive/SJW...I've never been able to understand how anyone could view doctor who (at least the new seasons) as anything but progressive - the companions are diverse, the doctor is inhumanly accepting in all his/her incarnations, and the broad message is USUALLY about acceptance, understanding, and finding nonviolent solutions (with the exceptions being foes that literally cannot be reasoned with). That being said, the level of virtue signalling in this season (especially given the clumsy way in which a lot of supposedly progressive content was handled) left a bad taste in my mouth. A good 50% of the episodes were a ham-handed attempt to reference a complex social issue in a superficial way (Kerblam! - Capitalism BAD!; Arachnids in the UK - haha Trump/insensitive rich people; Rosa - Racism bad! The Witchfinders - Sexism bad!). None of the targets (I hesitate to say villains) are remotely complex or sympethetic, which leads the inference that they're just there to be acceptable targets that can be freely hated and disposed of (kind of like chucking Nazis in a video game as shorthand for 'these guys are really bad and evil and it's okay to kill them). It's just lazy writing. I'm not saying you need to make, say, the racist guy from Rosa sympathetic, but for him to resonate as a villain and a threat, IMO he needed to have more to him than just a nothingburger of 'Me racist, blame black people for something, enact hilariously over the top plan to stop racial equality, Grrr.'. Personally, I got a lot more emotional resonance out of the random guy on the street's (who slapped Ryan) casual racism than I did the supposed antaognist's cartoonish and largely unmotivated villainy.

No, it really was bad per se in that it was so lifeless,witless and above all glorified denigrating the Doctor as a character. The number one thought I have coming out of this year is what does Chibnall have against having a female Doctor? He can say he's for a female Doctor all he wants but the writing says otherwise because the Doctor has never been made stupider or more useless on a consistent basis ever.

I was thinking about the complaint (in the video too) about too many companions and it just doesn't fly. So many other shows have a series of characters far more than 4, particularly sci-fi and they don't suffer from such poor characterisation. Many have managed to establish their characters by the first episode.

I agree with the point about the racist guy - it could have been a great opportunity to show where racism actually comes from and how to combat it, but instead the villain was paper-thin with no discernable motivations. I thought that episode was if not the best of the series then at least in the top 3, but the villain was a massive missed opportunity.

Jodie Whittaker's Doctor to Dr Who is like Cursed Child to Harry Potter. It's bad fan fiction and I don't consider it canon
