In the example of not eating the ice cream what Dr. Elst calls tapas is technically called indrīya nigraha. It is only the prohibitive aspect of walking on the path to liberation. Tapas is the positive action of carrying out prescribed practices as directed by the Guru. By the way, no one is without a Guru, for he is not physical. The inner voice guiding you flawlessly in every situation, if you only care to listen, is he.

According to shankara past karma (sanchita karma) is burnt with advaita gnyana ( oneness with brahman) concentrate on present, doing your actions deligently (prarabdha karma). Then you do not worry about future karma(agami karma) since a brahmagnyani will not act against dharma. The gnyanis are not touched by The bodily sufferings of karma. Not having gnyana is the true suffering.

I feel the this person is taking a simplistic approach on the concept karma....In my view, people who commit sins..will simply degrade into a lower level ..in terms of their spritual journey ..in the next birth...It is not a one-to-one..kind of thing...meaning if you kill a person, in the next life somebody kills you..Wouldnt that make life completely mechanistic..taking away free will.???.I feel the teaching says karma is more "evolutionary" than mechanistic...Of course anyone can quote isolated cases ..to support an argument..but whether it is correct is something else..

Karma is more psychological than action. I think only memories get transfer in certain circumstances. Even if it transfer, you will not get hurt, other person will. Second, there is no concept of free will. Whenever we have choice, we choose according to our capacity of mind. And that capacity is decided by our past experiences, reaction to those events etc.

Yes morality..good and evil are subjective and essentially human constructs....of course necessary for the society...but in the karma theory there js nothing good or bad ...their is just action and effect....or the samskara and pravritti...of course samskara is result of past karmas

Not a historian, but the word "orient" sounds a bit archaic to me....And if not mistaken..by definition.. the orient means east asia..So as an orientalist..he is not only out of date...but should not be talking about a hindu concept..like "karma"..By the way karma and reincarnation appeals more to reason..than the idea of one life time..for all humans ...for whom "God" decides their place in "heaven"..or " to burn eternally in hell"...Let us also not forget..humans live in a very unequal world.. .So if this God was a human..how would you describe him???..

I feel he is also wrongly quoting the Gita...seems to me, this guy is influenced by western philosophical ideas...Krishna considers panduvas fighting the kaurawas..as a fight of "good against evil"..and as a duty as a kshtria....which does not fall into the realm of "sin"..that requires a drop in the spritual journey of the panduvas...
