The genre has been around for quite some time. Early dystopian works date back hundreds of years. Dozen upon dozens of notable works came into being during the last century, mainly due to the political climate of the period in question. The eary 2010s may have been the heyday of young adult romance dystopia, but they certainly weren't the heyday of the genre in its entirety. From a cultural perspective, not even the Hunger Games can compare to 1984, a book that has impacted our culture so deeply that many of our dystopia-related expression have their roots in it. Who among us hasn't heard of Big Brother? The thought police? Room 101? Many would agree that Orwell has created our idea of what a dystopian world should be like. The shadows that once lit the fire of Orwell's inspiration are far from gone. We live in the most dire of times; old demons have awakened from their slumber, and humanity's future appears grim and forbidding. An environment that will, without the shadow of a doubt, foster the creation of many a dystopian masterpiece. Although, taking what became the norm and was once thought dreadfully authoritarian into consideration, these new works will make 1984 a comforting read that harkens back to a brighter past.

She rarely reads outside the YA genre, that's why this video lacked the best dystopians books out there.

The maze runner is the best. Many people are sheeps and are ready to trash it because Xtine hates it, but it's very good.

I'm glad you did this bc it reminded me of dystopian series I started but didn't finish bc at the time I felt them redundant like you said. And yes, The Host is SO underrated! Okay, off to read book 2 of the Delirium series now. 😊

I personally didn't like the book Matched because it seemed like a teen version of 1984.

Luke Puffer If you've read Scythe and haven't read Unwind by the same author, you definitely should. My favorite book of all time.

You could classify it as dystopian, but I'd say it's firmly Science Fiction.

Shera BookWhispers oh true, it probably is more sci-fi than anything

What I think should have been on the list for UNIQUE dystopian to counter the mass amount that came out would be Julia Kagawa's Immortal Rules. It was solid all the way, for me at least.

"The Darkest Mines" "Never Fade" "In The After Light" Why did it take me so long to see that?

Actually, I would suggest NOT reading The Crown unless you want to break a window when you throw it out in pure FRUSTRATION! I agree not to go into books with a closed mind and I did that for The Crown but...just no. I enjoyed reading The Selection though in a guilty and raging way. It should have ended with The One.

I was literally in kindergarten when the last hunger games book came out… I think it’s fair to say I’m starting a little late Edit: I can confirm that I stopped reading for a long time in middle school but then I picked up the legend trilogy and it absolutely blew my mind. That series is what got me back into reading and I loved every single book in it
