Those two wins over Montreal in the 70-71 semifinals were the first time a Western division club got a playoff win over an Eastern club. The North Stars were also the reason why the playoff format was changed from 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4 to 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 because Minnesota was suspected of tanking to drop into 4th place where they wouldn't have to face the Black Hawks. They lost their last 4 games, two of them to expansion teams Buffalo and Vancouver and another to the last-place Golden Seals.

Habs fan here; watched my Habs faithfully from 1974 on… Bobby Smith and Steve Payne saved the Minnesota franchise. The North Stars became an exciting team to follow! They were a great team with great fans. The team left with one of the best players of all time - Mike Modano - It was sad to see them go. This new Forest/Wild team doesn’t have the same feel as the late 70’s/ 80’s North Stars !

Great presentation. I was a Seals and Rangers fan living on Long Island and I always looked forward to the few times each year where the CBS Game of the Week would feature a Western division expansion club. Minnesota, St Louis, Philly, Pittsburgh and later Buffalo were usually good for one appearance per season.

I’m a Rangers fan but I found this to be meticulously researched and very well put together. We had the Stars farm club in New Haven CT (Nighthawks ) from 72-76 or so. Some of these draft picks mentioned in this played in New Haven. The Nighthawks were an AHL team that was a joint farm club for the Stars and the New York Islanders in the early days.

I worked in the Stars exec suites that final season. What a gas to be there after listening to Al Shaver's voice going in and out in scratchy radio broadcasts growing up in frosty North Dakota. What a tragedy when they left. But the best part of that experience was getting to play pickup hockey on the arena ice at noontime! Norm Green sux for all time... 🖕

My God, where did you find all those old clips and newspaper shots? And what a treat to see all those player photos with the 70s hockey hair and porn-star 'staches! 😅🤣😂 I totally recognize my old HS hockey hairdo in those dudes!

They got Gump Worsley toward the end of the 1969-70 season, that helped them just barely get into the playoffs

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Just curious though...where did you get the game clips from? You wouldn't happen to have and full games from back then, would you? I'd pay good money for any and all games between the Stars and St. Louis prior to 1977.

First off, it's the Carlson brothers, not the Carson brothers, and secondly even if that wasn't common knowledge amongst anyone that has watched hockey for more than 5 minutes, he kinda mentioned it in the documentary. But thanks for the heads up.
