I once found a Cardinals egg that fell out of its nest. I took it and put it in an egg carton and placed under a heating lamp turning it on and off periodically. My mom said, son that egg will never hatch. Believe it or not it hatched a week later. I reintroduced it back into the nest and the mother raised it. One of the most satisfying things I did as a kid.

Wow!! That’s the best story!! 💕 You saved that baby and it went on to reproduce and then their babies went on to have babies. You made a difference. Even a small pebble makes a ripple in the water.

Wow! That's amazing. Truly one in a million shot, the fact the egg survived the fall, the fact you managed to incubate it in an egg carton of all ironies, the fact it actually hatched! and the fact you successfully reintroduced the chick into the nest and the mother raised it without question. BRAVO Sir 👏🏻

A great aunt of mine collected Cardinals. Every knick knack you could think of. The whole house was full of them. After her funeral, we all drove out to the cemetery. During the graveside service, we all noticed that the evergreens around the cemetery were FULL of cardinals. They were all around us. It was the most beautiful sight.

The cardinal pair in our neighborhood are so tender with each other. When the female is feeding on the ground at the bird feeder, the male is up in the tree, watching out for her, chirping. He won't eat until she's had her fill.

Greg LaPointe yeah I know what you mean, when you hear that “feeding chirp” as I’ve heard it described- you know they are near and it is awesome because that way you can be alerted to when they’re at the feeders or just visiting. I’m speaking specifically about the winter, in the spring and summer, they sing, so you can be alerted to their presence very easily at that time. But in the winter and stuff they don’t sing, so it’s great that they still do the feeding chirps that way you can look outside when you hear them and then see their magnificent beautiful colours (the males and females are both beautifully coloured in my opinion) and they look stunning against the white wintery backdrop

Nearly 10 years ago we had a brutally cold winter in Southern Ontario. I saw a pair of Cardinals (male and female) in the yard and they were actually digging in the ground looking for worms. (Normally this isn't their food choice) The male was sharing whatever he found with his mate - or Mrs. Cardinal - as I nicknamed her. It was a sight to see.

I have heard so many different stories about the significance of seeing a Red Cardinal - most recently, when one appears it is the Soul of a Loved One passed. I had a wonderful Pair living for years in my Yard and one day while trimming the Hedge, a stunning empty Nest fell to the ground. I was shocked to see the beautiful creation with pretty delicate ribbon woven thru and around the perimeter, perhaps from someones Birthday Gift that escaped the Trash? but most stunning and breathtaking were the dried Hydrangea flowers!! neatly tucked near the threaded ribbon - it was so beautiful it truly looked like a Wedding Bouquet! So excited by my find, I sadly forgot to photograph it before I gave it away as a Gift to my Neighbor as it was really her Hedge from which it came. Not that I should regret giving away any Gift, I secretly do! It was just so special and knew it was built by my little Red Friends I was devoted to for years. Watching the Male (Henry) tenderly hulling a Seed and feeding his Mate (Gladys) was perhaps the greatest Gift of all!

I had two or three couples of cardinals nesting in the trees in my yard in Texas. That was when I found how caring the red dad's are to their babies. I saw a male & female near a feeder, and I noticed that though she was almost as big as him, she was still young cause she started the fast wing flapping and chirping baby birds do when they want to feed. The dutiful dad went to the feeder, gathered sunflower seeds and fed her 3 or 4 times before they flew off. I had never seen that before! It was like a human dad hand feeding a 16 Yr old! I thought, that's daddy's little girl!! She was really demanding, too. Great respect for cardinal dads!

I found a baby cardinal in the middle of a road with no trees or parents to be found. I was able to raise Roscoe and prepared him for release. However he always returned, demanding to be brought inside. After nearly a dozen releases and observing close calls with a hawk, a snake and a cat we decided he could stay. One of his many fans and friends gave him a huge cage and we put it in our sunroom. Each morning I opened the cage doors and he had full use of the room. He proved to be extremely intelligent and solved a number of puzzles and even housebroke himself and would return to the cage to relieve himself. He loved people and always flew to his visitors to sit on them and eat any treats given to him. He bathed each morning and loved to eat the grasses, flowers, seeds and fruits I picked daily for him. He grew into a gorgeous red male. Beautiful. Sadly somebody reported me and he was confiscated and released in the middle of winter. Sad day. I miss him.

When my friend Angel was terminally ill, she told me that I would know when she crossed over. (She lived in Florida, and I was inTexas) one Saturday morning on my way to work, I saw cardinals my entire drive. Later that morning it occurred to me what I might be witnessing. I was right, she had passed away early that morning. I knew she was with me. That was 20 years ago. I rarely go a day without seeing cardinals. I’ve lived in several places since then, visited other states, and still I see cardinals. I’m most excited now as we moved into another home, and I have a pair of cardinals that inspired me to put up feeders. I’m so excited, I have gray doves 🕊 (3 pairs) at least 3 blue jays, a red headed wood pecked, and 2 other smaller ones, but don’t know their breed. Thank you everyone for contributing. I have great memories of a cardinal, "Lil' Red Bird". He was a hurt cardinal, I brought to the animal hospital. They said his wing was too damaged and they were going to put him down. I told them I have a birdhouse, 16'x32'x8' high, sides protected with half inch hardware cloth that I raised bobwhite quail. He was with me for several years. He had branches to hop around on and would fight with several males through the hardware cloth. He was The Boss. 😊

So lovely. I love their colors (both the male and female). Once they are paired, they really are inseparable- this one couple comes to my parents' house just about every day to eat from the feeders. Whenever I'd see one of them, I'd know the other was nearby and I was always right. Their commitment is admirable. Also, the other day, I was in my backyard with my family and a cardinal was above us in a tree calling its little heart out. My mom whistled at it and it stopped and looked right at her, lol! They are just too cute. Thanks for an enjoyable and informative video!

I have enjoyed watching cardinals for as long as I can remember. I watched a pair on my deck furniture several hours ago. There is no mistaking their distinctive coloration.

When I saw how long the video was I was like “That’s too long!” Boy, was I wrong. That was the fastest ten minutes I think I’ve ever spent. Thanks for all the great information from someone who didn’t know as much as I thought I did! Oh, and I had a male cardinal that showed up bald every spring for three years in the Outer Banks of NC.

I love them. I have two pairs that visit me many times during the day. I will hear them chirp so I open the window and call them to the fence. They wait patiently as I toss shelled peanuts to them, where they dine on the ground as I talk to them. First and last birds of the day, and I am so lucky to have them and all of the others critters in my yard that I interact with.

Here on Amelia Island in northern Florida, we have always had 3-4 couples grace our yard over the years. One male stands guard in the tree while his wife baths in the bird bath. Another male waits till dusk....till everyone has gone to bed....and then comes to the feeder for special nighttime treats we put out just for him. They are a joy!

Thank you SO much Lesley for putting together this wonderful, informative video. And thanks to those who gave you videos & info to use. Decades ago when we lived in Southern Ohio, I was thrilled to have them coming to my feeder. They ARE spectacular & their songs are so happy! But, since 1978, we've been in SoCAL & there are none here! I miss them, however, I have other birds coming to my backyard. I certainly miss those brightly colored feathered friends singing their happy songs. Thanks again to you & the folks who gave you what was needed to make this terrific video! ♥

This is a really good video! We have had cardinal families in our backyard for 20 years and I recognize all those wonderful calls but I've never seen a yellow cardinal (but I will be looking from now on). I also just learned from your film that cardinal mates sometimes divorced and cheated. Those scoundrels!

"I'LL CATCH YOU WHEN YOU FALL"...Sometimes I feel like a redbird, that's searching for its lost mate, I beat my wings as I climb to the sky, but fly alone till death is my fate. There's an amazing story about the redbird that inspired me to write a rockin blue grass song 30 years ago. It's even more amazing than the song, and my blessed widowed grand mother, who inspired it 30 years before that. As a little boy with a BB gun in her back yard, I remember when I heard MeMe say, "David, don't shoot the redbirds." I asked her why, and she said..."because they mate for life." Imo, the most amazing thing about the song was, right after I wrote it, oddly I went out on my patio with my guitar to make a first ruff recording on my cassette recorder. I hit a G chord and the record button, and heard a sweet sound on the high line above. That beautiful male redbird, sang a duet with me all the way through two of my original first cuts. Wonder what the odds are of a wild red bird, singing a duet twice in the first cut of a song about a red bird, inspired by a comment to a 7 yo boy 30 yrs earlier about red birds? Funny thing, he'd wake me up at 3Am and be singing in a little tree in front of my bedroom...lol. My mom used to say, it was the spirit of Meme in the redbird. :)

Every winter for 4 years the same two cardinals go on my neighbors roof, and I always feel lucky that every year their roof is a top destination, I believe the two cardinals are together, as the male has bright red, and the female has brownish red, cardinals are such a sight to behold on...

I have two cardinals who are wonderful fun to watch. "Barney" is a feisty cardinal that patrols the windows of my job attacking windows. After a point we ended up putting up a fake owl to protect him from himself and to stop the perpetual tapping noise of the beak against the glass. Barney moved on shortly after and other birds seemed not to mind oddly enough . Nowadays Barney is busy attacking lamp posts with glass *sigh*. He's less successful with making contact though. The other cardinal I know is the "Little Firebird". I've never seen a cardinal so intensely red in my life. His tail feathers are a little longer then most cardinals I've seen which makes it more dramatic when he takes flight. However the most special thing about him is when he catches the light. He looks like he's made of flames. Little Fire is tricky to catch a photo of. I think he's either a neighborhood celebrity or very aware that his extra bright feathers attract more attention because he does his best to hide in the shadows. It's a real joy when he feels comfortable enough to come out and show off his intense red.

My dad died a year ago, and a cardinal knocks on my window every day. I believe in my heart that it is my father knocking in to see me. My father and I were very close. I have never gotten over the loss of my father. And it brings me comfort and joy when I see the cardinal knocking on my window. I do believe that Cardinals are from the afterlife.
