Used to do this trip when I was a child behind the massive Ka Steam locomotives of New Zealand Railways . These were 1400 HP 4-8-4 (FEF) locos built in NZ. Now that was a trip!

When I was a child, growing-up in rural Canterbury, my father worked as a Station Master. He received discount rail travel anywhere within N.Z. I regularly rode the 'Scenic Daylight Express' to Auckland. Viewing your video has brought back memories of the trips I did. It is one of the most specactular rail journeys in the world.

When will Auckland and Wellington be connected by high-speed rail? The current trip is over 10 hrs and its faster to just drive it or fly. HSR would be super cool.

Great video although not long enough, back in the days when tourists were allowed to visit!! I remember the old days, Wellington to Auckland by steam, stopping at Ohakune and Taumarunui for the obligatory pie on a thick railway plate and thick mug of tea. Then came the Silver Fern railcar and the Silver Star sleeper train, all long gone now. Music far too loud, switch it down a bit 👍!!

I liked it. Could have done with more video of Orakei Basin and Hobson Bay, and the harbour side coming in to Auckland. You could get your additional footage from any old train through that route, and then you could promote the Northern Explorer "...as the best way to arrive in Auckland", or similar. (probably some form of boat is better, but hey, its better than a plane/taxi combo!)

one time i had to go on this railway on accident because i accidentally went to welington airport instead needing to go to auckland airport so i can go to auckland we were going to take a flight but since its more fun on the nothern explorer and that its easier we just got on the train 20 minutes after landing in the airport

@HotForgeChaos6 жыл бұрын
Those are all the old Auckland suburban passenger "SA" cars, powered by DC and DFT class diesels as a push/pull type arrangement. They are ex-British Rail Mk2 carriages that have been rebuilt and regauged. They were due to be shipped off to Southern African countries a while ago but they're still parked up at Taumaranui for some reason
