In this instalment I look at the flag of Northern Ireland, even if it is unofficial, and still causes controversy inside the country today. Despite its seeming loyalist connotations, the flag has a history that is at the same time as Gaelic as it is British and like Northern Ireland is a result of the mixture of both. Covering as diverse topics as the Ui Neill's mysterious Red Hand of Ulster, the Tyrone Rebellion and Nine Years War of 1594 - 1603, the Anglo-Scottish Plantation of Ulster, The 1916 Easter Rising and the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1970's.

The hand represents Hugh O’Neil in the Middle Ages was racing competitors to Ulster by boat. The first man to touch the ground would claim Ulster so O’Neil cut off his hand and threw it to the beach

@NilsAlbertsson
@NilsAlbertsson 6 жыл бұрын
@legamin mac cormaic... You said _"When you say the people of Ireland vote for it do you mean the whole Island"_ Of course I mean the whole island, but probably not in the way that you would like (which would be undemocratic). There would need to be two separate referenda... One in the North (on whether or not it wants to leave the UK and join the ROI), and then one in the ROI on whether or not it wants to accept NI into the Republic... I know you think the latter is probably entirely unnecessary (and you're probably right) but the citizens of the ROI still deserve the right to say whether or not they want to absorb NI. There will also probably be some sort of transitional deal between the ROI and NI, so there may even need further referenda to sort all that out. At the end of the day though, for a democratic united Ireland to happen, first the people of NI need to ask for it in a plebiscite, then the people of the ROI need to accept their request to join.... When it's all said and done, the future of Ireland is now exactly where it should be; in the hands of the peoples of the Island of Ireland.

Look, guys, can't the NORTHERN IRISH themselves vote on what they want Northern Ireland to be? Economically and population-wise it has the strength to become a country of its own and it has its own culture. I believe if the people have those three factors and want to rule themselves or be part of another country it should be in their power to be that. They want to be part of the UK for now so that's what they are going to remain. What I'd personally do is make Northern Ireland a dominion in the style of Canada, Australia etc. with a governor(-general) representing the queen but otherwise a completely independent country with an open border union with the Republic of Ireland.

Nick dB we had that until the 70's...officially. To be fair they tried to reintroduce this but thought it would be best to share power between two sides, which has one snag when you put polar opposites together they will repel. If a proper democracy was installed I think would improve things.

Tham Jorran Northern Ireland wasn't a dominion, it was part of the UK with home rule. Not quite the same as a dominion because they had representation in the UK Parliament and many of the laws made by the UK Parliament did apply to them. It was essentially a form of devolution like NI is supposed to have now.

Regarding the origins of the red hand.. I remember an Irish mythology book " beyond the mist" by Peter O'Connor. In it he refers the the Ulster cycle which according to O'Connor is a bunch of stories about tribal warfare. The Táin is one of these stories. Anyway one of these stories includes two Irish king's fighting over the crown. The story goes that the two had to swim out to a rock and back to shore. Whoevers hand touched the sand first won the crown. On the swim back to shore one of the king's began falling behind and seeing that he was not going to win he severed his hand and threw it ashore! He became king of Ulster. This fits with the idea of personal sacrifice Hilbert mentioned in the video.

St.Patrick removed the “serpants worshipping” ppl. The goddess tanit was the serpant goddess.. her right hand was red when war was about. They were the last contingent of the punics. This is why Rome/the church wanted to rid the world of these “serpants” as Rome hated the Carthaginians. After it all settled Ireland was full blown Catholic. Then the English broke away from the church and the rest is history(except for the stolen generation from the 1800-1900’s from orphanages and flung to the 4 corners of the globe.

The best story of the red hand is the one I was taught as a child. The story goes: "The king of ulaid/ulster had a lovely daughter and two of the kings champions were in love with her, so to avoid them fighter each other as he needed both men as champions, he held a race... the 1st one of them to finish the race (foot or on horseback? Dunno!) by placing his right hand upon the ulaid flag would win her hand, as they neared the finish one was just ahead of the other, but the champion in last/second place was left handed, so he cut off his right hand and threw it ahead as they neared the end, hitting the flag and winning his bride. He then went on to become king and made the banner with the hand into the flag it is today." ...that's love for you, or you could look at it as the ladies getting us into trouble once again! ;)

I have a story about the red hand of O'Neill Two men were fighting trying to claim Ireland, one of them was called O'Neill, so to finally settle this they decided to have a boat race and whoever touched it first would claim Ireland. Later on in the race one of the men (O'Neill) was loosing just meters away and he wanted Ireland so badly that he pulled out a knife and proceeded to cut off his own right hand and throw it as far as he could. He claimed Ireland with his own dismembered bloody hand and that's where the Red hand of O'Neill came from. My second name is O'Neill and my family's motto is "The red hand of Ireland forever"

I think Northern Ireland should learn from Canada and make a flag that is completely un-controversial and meaningless. Northern Ireland has two communities who have historically been at each other's throats. If you represent both groups on a flag someone will not like it so the simple answer is don't represent anyone on it just make a cool looking flag.

The story I heard was that a viking expedition was landing in northern Ireland and the viking leader said "first man to shore will rule this land" and a mercenary named o'neill cut one of his hands off and threw it on shore, thus cementing his family's claim to ulster.
@tiarnan237

the one i heard about the red hand as a kid was that O'Neills (basically kings of Ulster) where having a war with another clan but had come to a stalemate and instead of wasting more lives fighting for the land they decided that one of the sons of each clan would race the other for the land, it was to take place between two forts; Navan Fort (Emain Macha) in county armagh which was the capital of the Ulaidh and Dungannon county tyrone which was one of they O'Neills main strongholds; the race started and O'Neill was ahead the whole race until the neared the finish line where he tripped and fell breaking his foot, as the other runner neared the finish line he looked to be winning when O'Neill pulled out his dagger and cut his own hand off and through it across the finish line which he then won as the rule of the race was that the "first families hand to cross the line will win". I was told that it is also why the O'Neills had it as the coat of arms which they then put it on their shields during the nine years war and had the cross of a norman lord (yellow backed with a red hand) so that all clans of Ulster would unite under it. I come from the area where this is said to have happen and it is a very popular version of events here

I’m pretty sure there was a horse race for kingship between two clans and the finish line was the bank other side of a river on which the land was the prize. They were so close by the end that as the leader was crossing the river the other guy stood before the river and proceeded to sever his left hand, pick it up and throw it across the river becoming the first to lay hand on the land in question, becoming the King of the Red Hand.

The last design had legs. Were it up to me, I'd suggest a sky blue field, orange central shield with red hand. With the left upper quarter showing George & Patrick crosses overlapped on a white field with a golden harp crest in the centre of that. Maybe a green & gold hemmed wreath of green shamrock beneath the shield or the harp. Pink & gold cordage for the hem and for the lanyards.

One of the stories I heard of the origin of the sand was on the finding of Ireland, it was told to the ships crew whomever touch the land first could claim it for his own. Many jumped into the water as began to swim to shore, although one man stayed on board, drew is sword and cut of his own hand only the thrown it onto the beach. Therefore the red hand

that's the story I heard but Ireland was inhabited before the birth of Christ supposedly by people who came from Iberia area , I wonder if they would have knowledge of the first people there as they could not read or write , st Patrick was one who managed to write on animal skin if I remember right when he went back to Ireland after escaping from there , so yes maybe from those times but a thousand years before that I doubt it , we know the danes and norse were in Ireland and fought the irish and also joined one irish family to fight another irish family , and then they did the same getting other Vikings to join them , the families of Ireland fought a lot , but the four ruling families moved from the north to the south of the island ,not sure when this was or why , but I think it was around st pats time which was around 300-400 ad ,

@thamjorran2118
@thamjorran2118 6 жыл бұрын
Celt of Canaan Esurix, the star is heavily debated (who knew?) some think it's the star of David as found on the Israeli flag because certain "protestants" called the British Israelites believed they were descended from a lost tribe of Israel. The more likely reason is to represent the 6 counties of Northern Ireland: Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Fermanagh and Londonderry.

Dear Hilbert, The Red Hand, per my learned national school teacher, told us the symbol comes from a one time race between two Celtic chieftan's who raced to determine which would be King of Ulster, the one whom was losing as the race ended took his sword and cut off his hand, throwing it past the finish point therefore claiming the Kingship of our Province (then commencing at the Boyne and moving north and west). This victor, supposedly an Uí Niall, could thereafter not be Ard Rí since the Ard Ríana were not to have any blemish however, Ulster is more than sufficient terrority. Go raibh maith agat.

Yeah but that’s pretty much the same as the diagonal red cross in the Union Flag representing St. Patrick. They’re both symbols that are too divisive to be recognised by both sides in the event of unification, regardless of the fact that they both do technically represent each side. There’s simply been too much bloodshed carried under both of them. I’m opposed to unification, but if it does happen one day, I think it should be in a way that tries to include everyone, for the sake of peace. A new, common flag for both sides would be a great way to start.
