To understand the Paul Getty kidnapping, you need to know a little bit about Getty family history. Paul, also known as John Paul Getty III, was the grandson of J. Paul Getty, the man who began making money from oil leases in the 1910s and became extremely wealthy. Despite his vast wealth, however, he was a very frugal man. He had all the money in the world but was very particular about how it was distributed among his children and grandchildren.

It’s sad how many wealthy families care more about money than even their own family. While I understand that giving money to anyone that asks is one of the quickest ways to lose money, I can’t imagine losing an ear and my grandfather not caring. That’s one really cold heart.

I like living in my ordinary house on an ordinary street, being able to walk around town without being recognised, go to work and enjoy the company of my colleagues, hang out with my friends... I'd hate to be rich and famous, and have to have bodyguards follow me everywhere and live in a high-security mansion away from other people and everyday reality. Unable to get an ordinary job because everyone would know me and I'd have to have my security with me, unable to hang out with anyone except other famous rich people... Sounds like hell honestly. Perhaps, but as is the case with many highly successful people Mr. Getty Sr. may have been a psychopath. @@EDTheOneable he most likely was a spoiled brat. That's awful. If you're going to loan money to family you should consider what happens if they can't pay it off. Personally if it was me, I'd loan it without interest, give them a few decades to pay off as much as they can, and if they haven't completely paid it back within that time, I'd write it off. If I wasn't willing to risk not getting the money back, I wouldn't loan it to them in the first place.

A bloody awful, terrible moment in time. I was just 5, when it happened, but grew up fascinated by the whole horrific kidnapping, the pure EVIL of that family... As a child of a loving, giving family, it was completely unfathomable to me, and like many people of that era, fell a little in love with the brave, artistic, hippy, with the beautiful hair, looks, and style.... Of course he should have paid the ransom, a mere drop 💧 in the ocean of that man's fortune, that would have saved his Grandson's life, health and happiness....

I don’t think I would’ve paid either. Paying that ransom would be an invitation for every kidnapper on earth to start grabbing his grandchildren.

He said in his autobiography that he refused to pay the ransom because: (1) if he had paid the money, he would place his children, as well as his grandchildren, in danger for a potential kidnappings (2) he thought the chances were best for the his grandson's release if he did not pay (3) it would also lessen the risk of other family members being kidnapped had he not paid. He did pay when his grandson's ear was cut off.

I had 3 wealthy doctors in the family one was an obgyn when I was 19 I asked for help emotionally not even financial yet, uncle Johns answer the OBGYN was, Oh, you are having the baby, well the world needs street sweepers. That said I can't wait to see the Getty in LA and it does have a free day. Wealthy people are bastards when Harvey died with 5 mil he left my brother who did kiss his ass 4 used t-shirts with holes after promising to pay for our college. What a guy. Narcissism and class prejudice is real even in the same family.

J Paul Getty was a horrible person. His initial refusal to pay the ransom because he didn't want to encourage other kidnappings makes sense and might be excusable. However, negotiating the ransom to an amount that he could write the bulk off of as a tax deduction, then not only requiring his son to pay him back the remainder, but charging him interest on top of that, are the acts of a selfish, cold-hearted monster.

There's another side to the story about the payphone. Yes he should have and though it's nice to give to charity, though that depends on the so called charity, like giving the a church, I find wealthy people who leave nothing to their family, even when their kids and grandkids are no worse then them and sometimes nowhere near as bad, if bad at all, part of their greed and proof of their selfishness, they know they can't take it with them, but there is no way they are going to share it with their family! Same goes with those who raise their kids giving them everything they ask for and then whether they're good kids or not, they decide all of a sudden they are going to cut them loose, if they have a trust fund or an allowance or whatever, they just stop giving them anything, if they were paying their rent or insurance on cars or even healthcare, they just stop it, and say they want their kids to go out and do what they did, make them have to struggle, to work for their money, all that shit! After they let them live off of them for their whole lives and now they're 18 or 25 or whatever, they decide they need to teach them a lesson! But shouldn't they have thought of that when they were still kids? Instead of spoiling them their whole lives and then all of sudden you take it all away, many times on a whim! They and others think of it as a noble action, but it's not, it's stupid, and I think often times they probably just doing it to see them have to struggle the way they did when they were in their 20s, and other times it's because the kids is into drugs and drinking and partying, but the kid isn't the only one at fault, and seeing as there have been so many stories of this happening with rich peoples kids, but then they act like they're surprised, all they had to do is spend some time with their kids, instead of out partying themselves, but with other rich assholes, that they are just trying to impress, it's not part of their jobs or anything, it's just because it makes them feel special, to hang out with these other rich people, even though they can't even stand them, and the rich people can't even stand them either! They could just spend time with their kids instead, to teach them good values, no not the right wing family values crap, just values, right and wrong, normal stuff! Well whatever!

He had to pay back the ransom for his own kidnapping???? Then when his father helped him front it, he charged him interest on it???? My god….this really goes to show that money does not mean happiness….he grew up privileged, but he clearly must have felt so completely unloved 🥺 That really breaks my heart…not only must he have felt that his family didn’t care if he died, but even when he got back safely, they cared more about the money it cost to save him….they probably cared more about the bad press than him. How horrific….

I have a millionaire in my family. In fact, he is my father's uncle and my godfather. It was a bad decision to pick him. I saw him maybe three times in my life. He is a man so afraid that somebody is going to ask him for money he avoids his relatives. When I met him he spent the whole evening talking about the best golf courses as if that would interest a sixteen-year-old girl. My family is OK financially and never intended to ask him for any cash, there simply weren't any other men available at the time of my birth to take part in my baptism. Now being almost 80 he is a sad, sad man wearing a bathrobe all day and not stepping outside his villa. All alone. I can only imagine how a billionaire would act.
