Columbia made some very good cartoons in the 30's and 40's, but were overshadowed by the bigger studios; it was considered a "B" movie company for years. The cultural references and political incorrectness are indicative of the times; that's why a number of them were not re-released later on.

@thomasplouffe1363 Жыл бұрын
so the five little girls in the jack in the boxes are actually the Dionne sisters, the first set of quintuplets to ever survive birth, they were born in there home by a midwife and there father, the heaviest baby was 2 pounds while the smallest was only 1 pound and 13 ounces, they were born in 1934 so the toys modeled after them were to resemble the girls at 2 years old, a few weeks after there birth they were removed from there home under false statements saying the girls parents were unfit to raise them, despite them already having 3 healthy smart children before the girls were born, they spent there early childhoods being paraded around and shown off by the doctor in charge of them, having advertisement banners, newspaper stories, shows and toys made about them, by the time the girls were 7 they were given back to there parents and have since sewed the Canadian government for what they have been put through, as of 2023 only 2 sisters are alive

There were already five more Dionne children at the girls birth. They weren't supposed to have been born until July.

And it was rumored that Oliva Dionne was talked into putting the girls in a Circus. That's why they were taken away. Plus the house had no elrctricity and they were leeping them warm near the wood stove.

Anna has it right (sort of), eggs were food and not some anthropomorphization of a doe-eyed creature. The cartoon played with the concept of food being fun and not to eat. This was the thirties when food was scarce and money even scarcer. You did what you could to put food on the table in those days and seeing a novelty film and a newsreel cost 30 cents which was big money at the time. Side note: You could go to the matinee and enjoy the show as many times as you liked. Your 30 cents was good for the whole day. Compare that to the fifty bucks or so in the modern movie theater for one show. 30 cents in 1936 is $5.42 today, (adjusted for inflation). People grew livestock for eating during the depression. If they developed attachments, it's certain that that went away with an empty belly and a few days without a decent meal. The society was mostly agrarian and the suburbs wouldn't have been invented yet (the late forties).

2:43 There was this scene where the three chicks are jumping over the dog’s string body, and an extended version was shown recorded on an old TV in a sepia tone, and the dog helped the chicks go under his body and then he turns up his nose while the chicks jump. I don’t know why the scene was cut, or was I thinking it’s like that?

GREAT hyperactive Night at the Museum type action. The cartoon is very richly drawn and painted even if it is a bit faded. I liked spending 6 minutes in this cartoon world but will check out the uncut albeit b&w version although I am pretty sure there will be a cut when the matches become black.. That gag at 2:00 made me a little queasy.

Columbia blew a chance to have the biggest goldmine in Hollywood animation. Frank Capra convinced Walt Disney to leave United Artists and bring his cartoons to Columbia. But Disney couldn't get the money he wanted out of studio boss Harry Cohn and so, after a few cartoons at Columbia, he left for a better deal at RKO. Not only did RKO distribute the Disney shorts, but also "Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs,""Dumbo," etc. Later, Columbia discovered another cartoon goldmine when it released the UPA (Mr.Magoo) cartoons.
