Thanks for this review. I've been looking for a journalling bible in the nrsv translation and this seems ideal :-)

Stellar review once again! In this edition I would have preferred a larger gutter space by compromising a smaller journaling space. PS Love the intro music!

Did this Bible come with yellow pages ? Because those pages look yellow.
@RGrantJones3 жыл бұрын
It has a yellow hue. In the video I called it cream-colored, I think. Thanks for the question!

It's good to know ink doesn't bleed through, I was wondering if highlighter would bleed through or how much is would show on the other side of the page?
@RGrantJones4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it, but I suspect that a fresh, juicy highlighter might soak the paper. Thanks for the question!

My Dear Sir, thank you for a fine review. I moved towards the NRSV a number of years ago, thinking l would be reading occasionally from the Apocrypha for background purposes to my congregation. To my surprise l’ve only done that once or twice over the years. Bye the way, if you wish to jump into the deep end of the Koine Greek pool, try 2 Maccabees for translating. Thank you for another great review. My sister bought me this Bible for my birthday last month. I had been looking for a journaling Bible with the Deuterocanonical books or Apocrypha, but the a Roman Catholic options (at least, the ones that I had seen) all had a smaller and lighter font. I do like this Bible. It has a nice handle, page color and thickness, and font style. I am worried, however, about the binding. My copy is also a little loose. I am glad it is sewn, but, overtime and use, I am worried it will get worse. I do, also, wish the publishers would have included maps and were a little more generous with the letter spacing. My middle-aged eyes have a hard time following along if I am tired, with the spacing as it is. To chime in on the Evangelical use of this Bible, I attend a Missouri Synod (English District) Lutheran Church, and this is the translation that is used. I understand that we may be an anomaly.

Thank you for your encouraging comment! Others who are considering this Bible should find your observations useful. Regarding the use of the NRSV, I know of one fairly conservative Bible teacher who sometimes reads from it: Bruce Gore. I believe he's a member of the PCUSA, a mainline denomination, but he strikes me as theologically conservative. It's interesting to hear of an LCMS church using the NRSV, but I've noticed some variation among them. One LCMS church near me is confessional and has communion at least weekly per the traditional liturgy. Its pastor is sometimes a guest on Issues Etc. The other church invites non-Lutheran visitors to communion, which it holds every Sunday, but at only one of its two services.
@rachelkarslake77874 жыл бұрын
@@RGrantJones the Lutheran church I attend has communion every week, as well, anf it has a high literigal service. They also allow non-Lutheran to participate in communion, but only of they share in the same core belief in the presence. I know that LCMS churches have the freedom to choose any translation in worship: there is no mandate, as in the RC church.

Great review, and thankful someone is reviewing the NRSV. I recently got NIV and ESV study Bibles to review, and I still cant stomach gender-exclusive langauge, at least for me. Thats a personal preference though. Mostly everyone at my church uses NIV.

Nice overview! I'm seeing that "gutter glow" in more and more Bibles, especially lower cost ones from China. I suppose it's something about the paper but haven't heard it discussed anywhere.

I should say, I got the Catholic Bible Press Journal Edition Bible after researching journaling Bibles (which was how I found you). Do you review this one? Couldn't find it in your videos. I'd also like to ask, what do you think of the Christian Community Bible, Catholic Pastoral Edition? I don't think you have a video about this one either?

Wow! That was a really thorough review.Can you please review the Saint Benedict Press Catholic Scripture Study leatherbound bible(RSV)? I like to mark and highlight the verses when I read the bible. Would you suggest the Saint Benedict bible or Saint Ignatius bible for such a purpose?
@criticaloptimist79614 жыл бұрын
This Bible looks perfect for note taking. I generally don't like marking up the Bible but this one looks basic enough for that usage while at the same time it doesn't look like cheap trash. And it has the apocrypha to to boot!

Are Evangelicals becoming more accepting of the NRSV? A couple years ago there weren’t many NRSV options.
@RoastBeefSandwich4 жыл бұрын
Some ecumencial and/or liberal churches are using it. I don't see many mainline evangelical churches using it though, they're mostly NKJV, NASB, KJV, or sometimes NIV. This is all judging by my area of the world - experiences may differ elsewhere.
@RGrantJones4 жыл бұрын
My impression is that RoastBeefSandwich is correct when he says that evangelical churches rarely us it, though I have no hard data to back that up. Thanks for the view and question!
@Will-ge7ri4 жыл бұрын
Thank you both for the replies! The reason I was asking is that I’m wondering what’s driving the demand for more NRSV options. I also noticed that evangelical bible is carrying some nice NRSV bibles.

I thought you already did this one, good review. I ordered this a couple days ago. I love good journaling and wide margin bibles, I have used a notepad with my bible for a long time which I number each page and put a page by page table of contents for the first 5 or 6 pages of the notebook but simply having a couple wide margins is way easier. Thanks brother

it's insulting that protestant call 'apocrypha' the books that they have taken away from the Scriptures - it's not enough to allow oneself not recognize thr canonicity of those books, they still need to denigrate those bokks
@RGrantJones3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Silverio! I certainly didn't intend to be offensive. But 'apocrypha' is the term the publishers chose, perhaps because, in addition to the Deuterocanonicals, this edition includes other books and sections outside the Hebrew canon.

I've watched a couple of your videos and noticed you mic has a nasty frequency bump around 5 to 6 KHz. It causes a pronounced whistle in the dialog that's slightly distracting when listening through full-range speakers and headphones. Appreciate your reviews though.

I'd get this just for the apocryphal books. It would be interesting to read them. I like the layout of this book it being all black letters and I'm hoping that the Nasb that Zondervan is releasing will look pretty much the same. Some people don't like thick Bibles but I love them.
@RGrantJones4 жыл бұрын
I agree, Edward. I like thick Bibles, particularly when the thickness is due to heavy paper. Thanks for viewing and commenting!

@@RGrantJones I know we have internet and that, but the information that used to be in the back and front of Bibles are just not there anymore, unless you can find one of the older Oxford Bibles or the Longprimer, or even a Thompson Chain. It seems to used to be standard to have a cyclopedic concordance, maps, history, archaeology and stuff like that in the back of the Bibles and cyclopedic index and or dictionary in the front. Those Bibles just aren't made anymore. I guess this is more due to people wanting thinlines and ultrathin Bibles. Back in them days people had little options I guess, but they used to carry these hefty Bibles with them and it never seemed to be a problem to them. But I guess it's now moden times, so go with the flow. Amd with me being of the younger generation, you'd think I'd like these thin Bibles. But no, I like to have a Bible in my hands when I'm reading and studying but I'm one person, and the majority always speaks louder. I can't afford a Longprimer, so I'm looking for one of those older Bibles, I think the Scofield reference Bible is one such, an Oxford or one of those KJV Bibles on eBay or something. I mostly use the NKJV, almost exclusively, but I love my KJV and the Nasb.
@RGrantJones4 жыл бұрын
@@edwardgraham9443 - you're right; older Bibles did tend to pack in more instructional material. The Bible I use most frequently these days is a verse-by-verse edition of the Revised Version, printed in about 1898, with center column references. The text block is almost 1.75 inches thick, and about a half an inch of that is due to material added in the back.

@@RGrantJones I'm looking at a Dickson New Analytical Study Bible and Dictionary in KJV on ebay, although I mostly use the NKJV, I like that Bible for the amount of information in the back. The Open Bible doesn't have as much info, plus it has skewed study notes withing the text. Remove the study notes in the Open Bible and I'd but it instead.
@RGrantJones4 жыл бұрын
@@edwardgraham9443 - I haven't examined the Open Bible closely. I had one several decades ago, but it was destroyed in a basement flood. In what direction are the study notes skewed? I've heard of the Dickson, but I've not seen it in person, as far as I can recall.
