Wow.. that brought back some childhood memories from 1966 travelling in a old Holden and towing a small caravan from Gawler SA up to Tom Price going across the Nullabor that was not bitumized. Fabulous times. Love the Yoda impersonation too! the children will learn more than you realize and have these memories for many years.

In 1976/78 spent two years on nullabour from Nundroo to koonalda homestead turn off building that nice sealed road people now enjoy to travel,nullabour might look desolate but there lots explore in area,caves,cliff descents,beach fishing,and in those days fox hunting for pelts at $30 each,was good sideline.

First time I've seen your YT channel and I like your vibe. I've done the Nullabor 6 times and it has been different every time - dirt, paved, green, dry, lots of dead roos, no roos (wet). I did an alternator on one return trip (west to east) and limped into Yalata Roadhouse (when it was operating). Had the best steak sandwich in history, chatted with the manager for an hour about the place - that was an education. Made it to Penola with just one jump start from a passer-by (had and drained a jump box) and had the alternator fixed by a bush mechanic for.... $60. Before that massive whale visitor centre there was a 5x10 shack that the indigenous care taker lived in. I remember seeing there was a stretcher bed inside, but his swag was on the floor. The frogs at Eucla restaurant - hope you include that! Amazing. And the Wedgies! Just wow! Wild dingoes, emus, roos. Wife saw a camel but I missed it. Anyway, like you I rave about the trip and recommend it to everyone. You just have to open your eyes and look past the bitumen.

In regards to crossing into WA with quarantine rules there are a few tricks to be aware of . There are several fruits and vegetables that if you cut up and freeze fresh that are able to come across the border but they must be frozen solid not in the process of freezing . These items eg tomatoes can be used in bolognese etc , lemons slices , onion slices , whole bananas , sliced apples etc are all good to freeze . We have driven the Nullarbor about 25 plus times including back in the early 70’s on the old gravel road and the trip always has something new to see . And yes whale season at the Head of the Bight is sensational . The summer trips bring our southerly or southwest winds consequently not pleasant travelling .
@TheLifestylePioneers
@TheLifestylePioneers Жыл бұрын
Yes, it all comes down to being aware of the restrictions and planning ahead. We didn't have much freezer space to spare, but not a bad option if you do.

I've done the Nullabor 8 times now, the first being in 1969 when we drove from Cairns to Perth for a sailing championship. Between Ceduna and Eucla there was 320 miles of gravel road. Overall, it was in pretty good shape. When we hit the bitumen at the border I had one of my friends bend down to kiss the bitumen and I recorded it. The greatest adventure of my life, though now, I've seen almost all of Australia, completing the Tassie trip back in 2018. First time I did the full lap was in a Honda Jazz. Had a Waco fridge with a small battery for backup and charged it from the engine. As I said, I have driven the Nullabor 8 times now and I never tired of it. Have a great trip.

We did Qld to WA 20 years ago and when we left Port Augusta we drove basically continuously till Norseman. There was one memorable bit where I slept on the gravel driveway of one roadhouse as we needed fuel and they hadn't opened for the day yet. Everyone else was asleep in the car. We had a little 4cyl sedan, 2 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs. To make it more interesting our fuel gauge didn't work so we topped off at every pump we came across. I had no idea of the interesting things dotted along the way so your video was a good eye opener. I'd love to do it again if I get the chance.

Just did the trip from Adelaide to Perth across the Nullarbor and via Esperance and Albany. Towing a Kimberley Karavan with a Landcruiser 200. Very pleasant drive. Took a lot of side tracks to see the caves, blowholes, whales and granite outcrops that pop out of the limestone. Mid September and it was green all the way! Weather was kind to us. I thought it would be a bit of a boring trip but I loved all of it. The scenery changes frequently. Will be heading back to Adelaide in a few days and looking forward to it. 👍

Great video guys, certainly brought back memories of our crossing a few years ago. Was I seeing things or was your StoneStomper hanging down at the front at around the 20:40 mark as you were driving in to see a cave? I’ve done that a couple of times and had to replace some of the clips, so easy to do. Now on to the next vid…

Good idea to slip stream to save fuel, but you need to be at least 3m or closer to the vehicle in front to get any sort of benefits. And the benefits can be up to 40% savings (particularly behind a semi-trailer). But following a vehicle that close from behind on an open highway is not very safe. Nice idea though.
@TheLifestylePioneers
@TheLifestylePioneers 6 ай бұрын
Cheers. In our experience, it doesn't need to be anything near that close when you're towing a big caravan. It might be the case with a vehicle only.

I think the Ford Ranger 3.2 was better 4wd you can more in the tub plus longer wheel base better for towing you don't have to change the whole vehicle to make it Work like Toyota 76 series the Ford Ranger just works 😉 money spent.

The Ranger was great but there's no comparison when it comes to off roading, the 76 crushes it.

Re towing in 5th. It's not the car that's the problem, it's the gear ratio. 5th is an overdrive gear, and you are trying to pull your trailer with a lacky band. Tow in 4th, direct drive, maximum torque, and surprisingly, better fuel economy. This video tells you all about it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZLPiaWBgdWMbJo You want to save fuel, speed is a major factor.

It is an underrated part of Australia. I’ve done over 40 crossings since the mid 90s & every run has been a bit different & always interesting. The run down from Caiguna down to the Baxter cliffs & onto Israelite bay & Esperance is up there with the CSR for me. I’ve found Penong, Eucla & Norseman best fill up points if you have enough range to avoid the other spots. The border village is the biggest rip off

Great journey indeed, but may I say don't slipstream heavy trucks it annoys the shit out of us and is very dangerous, if the trailers tracks sideways for any reason blown tires or air bag failures or just a load shift , you end up in the scrub spat out by the slip stream boundaries , not a happy event. Stay safe and keep the black stuff down..

Thanks mate, good to know. We do our best to maintain radio contact with the trucks around us including when we're following.

I get so pissed off with motorists proudly proclaiming, "We crossed the Nullarbor!" No, you didn't! You crossed a miniscule part of it! Even on the more northerly 'old' road, you would only go through about 20 miles of it! If you truly want to cross the Nullarbor, catch the train or follow the train tracks. Anything else is just a massive w*nk!

I guess it's like a lot of regions of Australia. When people say the Nullarbor, they mean the Eyre Hwy, it's a figure of speech, not a literal term.

You only see about 70km of the real Nullarbor Plain from the road....If you really want to experience the Nullarbor...Do it by Train....then you see about 400km without a single tree....Nullarbor=Plain without trees.....
