In the Gainesville area we can get one cubic yard of excellent composted mulch loaded into a truck for $21. Buying your composted mulch and mulch at a maker like Gaston Mulch and Soil in Gainesville is the only practical way to get lots of good composted mulch at a great price. I got a load a couple weeks ago and using it around my property. It's been composted for 1 year to get to the right stage of composting. They also deliver for a fee, so you can get a bigger load, but in my pick-up they said one cubic yard was a full load.

You have me so inspired after binging a ton of your videos, yesterday I was like "ok this weekend I'm going to clear out my garden beds and start prepping them for growing season." and then it snowed 2 inches just on my drive home. I need to calm down and just plan and maybe get some supplies until closer to growing season here haha

You know what’s wild, I have a big concrete mixer and I decided today that whenever I plant a new fruit trees, I’m going to dig a big hole and mix the soil with pro mix, leaves, fish from my lake, ash from my burn pit and chicken and cow manure. Just like mixing concrete except with a different recipe.

Also, Checking out any stables (horse, cattle), more often than not, you can get as much green manure as you want. And that mixed with logs will work even better.
@GM_____2 жыл бұрын
As long as that manure is coming from an organic farm that does not use herbicides and pesticides that would kill your plants this would be a great idea. People need to keep in mind that certain manures are too “hot” to be immediately used in a garden (such as chicken manure). Manure that is “hot” aka very high in nitrogen can burn your plants and has to be composted for several months to be used effectively. If you needed to use some to feed plants immediately you could use rabbit manure instead; it’s very gentle on plants.

I have a chicken run that I strip and refill with cheap top soil, every 6 months, it’s hard work but my garden just booms.a 10x20 run needs 40-80 bags depending how deep you strip down and if you garden till every month in run like I do . Keeps down funky odors and hens love the worms I garden till up. I am getting older now so I pay neighbors big grandsons to come help me, we knock it out in 1 hour lol and I pay what the job is with to me which is 200.00 how I reason this is if I was doing the stripping of run alone it would take me all dang day! Expecially in this texas heat so it’s worth it to me to pay what I offer the job to be worth to me, needless to say anytime I need help those boys are Johnny on the spot to help me and earn $

I’m getting ready to build some raised beds and my husband and I were talking last night, we have a large mound of clay that we’re going to fill the raised beds half way up and then fill it up with some kind of soil…. Also question…totally not being critical or anything like that but I’m just curious why you do all your gardening in your front yard? And does your neighbors give you a hard time about it? Not being mean, I’m just curious….
@WildFloridian2 жыл бұрын
Great idea on the clay! LOL! I love the question. Long story and many reasons for why we did the vegetable garden in the front. Main things is I’m slowly taking over garden maintenance away from the lawn care company. When I did a project here and there… they usually killed it. So it was easier to say don’t touch the front yard. So the back yard and the side hedge are taken care of by them. I do the rest. The front yard had the best light for the vegetable garden and for fun my son and I had planted some sunflowers and pumpkins where a pine had died… the soil was gorgeous there. And then everything evolved from there. My neighbors overwhelmingly love it 🥰 I get stopped even by people who drive through the neighborhood and told… “kelp going, I love what you are doing” The three closest (physically) are huge advocates and supporters of the garden. They have argued to the city on our behalf, given free plants to me, time house work around filming videos. I’ve been amazed by how much love we get. Even one of the lawn guys told my husband that he loves coming to our yard and see what we are doing. My advice to you and all is that you will be amazed how much people will love what you do… even if they say nothing 😊
@deborahshallin5843 Жыл бұрын
I am strongly suggesting that you may want to consider adding amendments like perlite, sand, coconut remains(sorry, can’t think of the name right now) etc. Here’s why? As your soil gets older, it may become more compact and in turn makes it harder for the plants to grow. What if some day you decide you want to plant a deep growing plant, unfortunately the compacted clay won’t permit it. In regions, where clay soil is common, amendments are often added. It just a thought from an old busybody. Best wishes for a great garden!

Did you have a layer of mulch down before you placed the raised bed containers? Am I correct to assume your beds are bottomless? No need for any sort of drainage, stones , sand or anything? Also wondering where you are located that you don’t have fruit rats especially with your banana trees. If I use chip drop would I need to supplement that with something for nutrition as you did w the banana leaves before topping w the miracle Grow soil? I’m just getting started. So glad I found your channels (lifeline). Got several 32” tall beds for Mothers Day and am feeling completely bamboozled. Thanks 😊

Happy frog out performs any other kind of bagged soil I have tried. It’s very expensive, $25 per bag 3cuft, but it really works. It’s not feasible to do a entire garden out of it unless your a millionaire but it can make a major difference in getting vegetables growing rapidly. I personally bag all of my cut grass and make piles of dirt, buy a box of worms from Walmart and throw them around the yard, unless my son takes them fishing. Much love from SW-C-FL, keep up the good work!;)
