In this video:
For eighteen years, Ben Franklin, the great American inventor, diplomat, and signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a tenant in a beautiful four story Georgian house at 36 Craven Street in London, mere blocks from the River Thames. As ambassador from the colonies, he entertained, lived, and even allowed other intellectuals of the time to stay at the house while he lived there from 1757 through 1775.

I volunteered at the Benjamin Franklin House as a tour guide back in 2014. At the beginning out every tour of the house all of the guests would be sat down in the seminar room for a short welcome monologue and introduction by the tour guide. Like Simon said in the video, all the bones are in the seminar room. People were always creeped out to hear that the seminar room was built directly over where all the bodies were buried!

Including his home in London and a closer look and carefull thought is being given to the very real possibility that he could have been London's famous Jack the Ripper. Grave robbing was big money, medical researchers needed cadavers to study but human dissection was illegal. Scientists have been paying graverobbers for centuries, even DaVinci used them for his studies, so maybe the son was hired by Franklin, he studied a lot of different scientific subjects.

L F yes, and I'm old, and when a video and article on line says something was found recently...I don't expect that it happened 18 years ago. They were implying it was a recent find, to make it sound better. Just because you remember 1998, doesn't make it recent. 18 years is far from recently, by an normal person's point of view. Even if you're 40, that is almost half your lifetime...FAR from recent. They left out the fact that the bones were found in 1998 in both the video and their website article. Because telling the story honestly, that is an OLD story and was solved over 17 years ago, is not as exciting and likely to draw watchers to the video.

Disappointing - I was rather hoping for a nice, chilling mystery rather than a history lesson. That said, I do find the mental image of Hewson bringing this up with Franklin pretty amusing: "Hey, Ben, is it okay if I bury my corpses in your cellar?" "Are these the type of corpses someone might come looking for?" "Um... I don't *think* so." "Then go ahead, I don't mind. Just put the shovel back in it's proper place when you're done."

I went to the University of Vermont, which was founded in the late 1700s. While I was there, the university embarked on a project to renovate the Pomeroy building (build in 1825), which at the time was where our communication classes took place. Long story short, while renovating the the building, they found skeletons buried in the basement. A little research showed that the top floor of the building was used as an anatomy lab back in the early 1800s. Why they chose to dispose of their cadavers in the basement of the building, I guess we’ll never know. But your story reminded me of that.

There’s no reason unless they were 🔪 there. It was relatively cheap back then and easy to just find someone to put them in a paupers grave and police today don’t question the elites they work for them. Only reason to keep them in the basement is to cover something up. Or keep them as 🏆

@Maxwell’s Silver Hammer so i just read all 3 articles out of curiosity and the only points they bring up are that he sat naked in the mornings in his own home(im pretty sure most people spend time naked in their own home), had a tendency to be attracted to older, more sexually mature and experienced women(which is pretty much the opposite of depraved when you consider that it was commonplace to be attracted to barely mature girls at that time in history), and allegedly was apart of a "SeCrEt SoCiEtY" that supposedly mocked traditional religion(lets be honest who doesn't mock traditional religion?) and engaged in the occasional orgy(which i could understand how someone might think of as depraved if they have a very egocentric view of interpersonal sexual relationships), so unless we've redefined the meaning of the phrase "Depraved Pervert" to include anyone who happens to have had more than one sexual partner within their lifetime, i think you may need to find some stronger evidence, because when i think of a "depraved pervert" i usually think of people who are genuinely morally corrupt or wicked in their actions as the definition suggests.

Marten Dekker ~I just want to say that I disagree with every point in your critique. In the case of this particular video, most every detail is needed to tell the story - and though not all of those details will be strictly retained - such as exact dates, common beliefs and attitudes of the period and the relationships of the players etc - without their inclusion, a complete understanding of the situation would be impossible. As to the question of the tone of the narrative and whether that delivery is excessively 'dry' or 'matter of fact', I would say that personally, I prefer to hear the facts presented concisely and without any tone of sensationalistic emphasis, allowing the listener to form opinion without any inferred direction imposed by an overly zealous narrator. To each their own I guess~

One minor point though, trepanning or "burr hole" surgery is still carried out today and is relatively common. Although it's not used for "releasing devils" it is the usual way to deal with cranial haematoma (blood clots between the skull and brain). I saw these done almost daily as an anaesthetics nurse, never saw any demons escape though ;-). Maybe a list of medieval surgical techniques that are making a come back is in order?

There was more medical innovation back then than now. If you know about the human body, they didn't back then.

And you can bet all the bodies were poor people. Even in death people were treated differently. You'd never get them using middle class or above bodies, just poor people who nobody would miss or care about. Sad.😢

A lot of human research/experiments in those times used the slaves. It wasn't uncommon unfortunately.

It's interesting that Franklin chose "Useful" as one of the words of highest admiration in his eulogy of his young friend.

Mrhycannon "raises the question" would be correct. To beg the question means that someone has made a conclusion based on a premise that lacks support. Like if I said, "my shoes are awesome because they're cool." I'm begging the question.

To be more precise, if a conclusion is embedded in the line of reasoning which should lead to that conclusion.
