The primary reason for the cutting of the hair of nuns was so the headpiece of the habit would fit comfortably. Like many things in religious life , it often took on a spiritual significance. Today with rare exceptions there are few nuns who wear religious habits, or live in convents . In fact, there are almost no Nuns at all! All this came to an end after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960’s . The “Nuns”, got rid of the religious habit, adopted secular attire, often used make up and jewelry and lived in apartments. and adopted radical feminism. That was the end of religious life in most places.

Nuns needs to go into a state of Chasity, obedience, poverty and to show NO humiliation to anyone (including herself and God). The cutting of her hair will show that she has left behind the materialistic and narcissistic attitudes of her life prior to entering the convent, everything that she knew, everything that she thought about herself has literally been cut away from her. Her life is now dedicated to God.

Sunshine Girl Hello and thank you for your reply. I do understand what you're saying for I used to believe the same and I do not doubt their motives for doing so. But then again, let's remember the story of Aaron's sons who were considered worthy of death because they offered "unholy fire" before the Lord's tabernacle. Most of these traditions find their roots in exalting man and not the Creator for if they did, they would not go against His Word. Moreover, the sacrifices God desires are a broken spirit and a contrite heart sister (Psalm 51:17). Shalom and God bless.

Ana Francisca Z i follow many preists and they even said that christian religion have told woman to be covered.i atleast never see mother marry pic in bikini outside church which shows that covering is modest.i totally understand that catholics or christians does not hve intrest to follow their rules anymore and they follow whatever they feel to but that does not change the teaching of religion.i dnt see how covering make a women dumb or effect mental abilities coz if covering yourself have anything to do being backward or less progressiv then catholic religion will never ask a nun even to do so.so point is only that if catholics dnt want to follow religion its theor choice but they r not suppose to force other people not follow their religion and let other make choices.
@JN-bq9wu5 жыл бұрын
Ana Francisca Z thats the thing you want to keave religion coz you think its does not fot anymore for your needs my dear but if some one wants to follow then whats trouble in that.i am from kuslim country i never wear hijab over there and no one beat me ever.if there r few who r too possessive then those few exist in each and every religion coz mental sickness does not have connection with religion and all the women i have met who take hijab r taking coz they r liking it if they r not then they will not oppose anti hijab.so my point is very clear here you take an excuse for those who does not want hijab but forced and you the force those not to take who want to take so basically in both cases you r forcing people against will just coz you have a mind set that it does not fit in modern world.and again i dnt think hijab effect tmyour mental abilities but as living in west now i can see that how little girls have make un necessary things so necessary in life that there r very few girls who r going in feild of science and technology so progress should not be measured by how much cloths you wear but by how many women got educated.yes if you say that islam is saying women to dnt get educated then i will suggess to learn about it first coz its very clear in islam that education is obligatory for both men and women.i would repeat again some ones social culture doesnot represnt the whole religion.i dnt thing any women will get harmed coz they covering but not covering just make a women nothing but object.and here is jo two opinion that women now a days r being objectified look around bars where they r liked to be ha ing heels and wear those cloths they might feel suffocated in so i dnt think that even western culturehave freed women but make her more slave to men

Partly as a symbol of their renouncing of "the world" and vanity, etc. Partly as a practical measure. Those wimples and veils (the thing that the older nun put on her head and which frames her face, and ties in the back, and then the long flowing piece of white cloth that goes on top) can get rather warm with a full head of hair. It's also easier to keep both scalp and wimple clean. The shorn locks would often have been used for things like wigs for those who had lost their hair in a more natural manner, or to illness. So, even there, they were doing good.

Please . . . . share generously with others, Especially with Consecrated souls. Thank you very much ~ and God bless you and yours. And He said to Sister Josefa: "And now write for My consecrated souls." It was the last time Josefa would transcribe the burning desires of the Heart of Jesus for them: "I call them all - My priests, My religious, and My nuns - to live an intimate life of union with Me. "It is their privilege to know My longings and to share in My joys and sorrows. "There's, to labor at My interest, never sparing themselves trouble or pain. "Theirs, by prayer and penance, to make reparation for many, many souls. "There's, above all, to become more and more closely united to Me and never to abandon Me, never to leave Me alone! Some do not understand and forget that it is for them to give Me companionship and consolation. . . . "And finally, it is for them to combine together in a league of love making but one in My Heart, to implore for souls the knowledge of truth, life and pardon. And when they see with deep sorrow the outrages I receive, My chosen souls will offer themselves to make reparation and to labor at My work; let their trust be unhesitating, for I shall not refuse their supplications, and all they asked will be granted them. "Let them all, then, apply themselves to the study of My Heart and to understand My feelings, striving to live in union with Me, to converse with Me and to consult Me. Let them cloth their actions in My merits, bathe them in My Blood, and consecrate their lives to the saving of souls and the extension of My glory. "Let them not desend to personal reflections which belittle them, but rejoice at seeing themselves closed with the power of My Blood and of My merits. If they rely on self, they will do little or nothing, but if they labor with Me, in My Name and for My glory, they will be powerful. "Let these consecrated souls revive their desire for reparation, and beg confidently for the advent of the Divine King: that is, for My universal Sovereignty. "Let them be burnt up with zeal and charity for sinners. . . Praying for them with compassionate hearts and treating them with all gentleness. "Let the world hear from their lips how great is My kindness, My love and My Mercy. "Armed with prayer, penance, and reliance on Me, never on self, let them go forward to their apostolic labors in the power and goodness of My Heart which is ever with them. . . . "My apostles we're poor and ignorant men, but rich and wise in the wealth and wisdom of God, and their watchword was: In Thy Name, oh Lord, I shall labor and be all-powerful. "I ask three things of My consecrated souls: "REPARATION, that is a life of union with Him who makes Divine Reparation: to work for Him, with Him, in Him, in a spirit of reparation, in close union with His feelings and desires. "LOVE, that is intimacy with Him who is all Love, and who humbles Himself to ask His creatures not to leave Him alone, but to give Him their love. "CONFIDENCE, that is trust in Him who is goodness and mercy. . . . With Him whom I live with day and night. . . . who knows me and whom I know. . . . who loves me and whom I love. . . . In Him who calls His chosen souls in a special way to live with Him, to know His Heart and so to trust Him for everything." This concludes His Message, and then the following is written: The last lines of the Message were written. . . . Josefa noted down what her Master wished her to communicate from Him to the Bishop of Poitiers, whom she was expecting shortly, then she laid down her pen. A few instants pass in Love's embrace. . . . Gods secret. . . . How solemn was the hour which marked the termination of Our Lords Appeal to souls.

deeptha nuwan - it’s a sacrifice. Sacrifice sheds us of worldly things and is always good in Gods eyes. The best way to understand sacrifice is fasting + prayer combined.

Also, long hair was a symbol of beauty and sexual activeness for centuries in the west (In Christianity, traditionally married women were expected to cover their hair while unmarried women were not, though this eventually gave way to fashion). Thus cutting hair is a rejection of vanity, sexuality, and availability to men.

Apparently, not many people get what "sacrifice" means. I honestly am sitting here facepalming while reading these comments.
