Every once in a while you just have to turn a piece of wood that still has moisture in it. It's definitely fun to watch them warp into something different than what you expected. Happy turning my friend 😊

Well, you never can tell what will happen! Warping adds to the character and authenticity of the bowl in my opinion; it showcases the 'handmade' element, each one is different. Lovely job, Gary.

Thank you David. Many people would not realize the bowl can change it shape a lot when turned green. Even a dry piece of wood can move around some. I find it fun to see what it will do. Thanks for watching, Gary

It's so much fun watching the curls come off of green wood and seeing them pile up on your arms. You did a really nice job preparing and turning this piece, Gary! Hard to predict or imagine a better shape than the oval you got from this one, through consistent thickness and patience. Really cool! A food safe finish and this piece is ready to make Betty a very happy lady! Well done, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀 Phil

I’ve seen a Vicmarc lathe designed so that you can sit down and turn 🤣. What a great turning with a really even warping. I’ve always been sceptical of turning wet wood due to the uneven warping that can happen. Intentionally or not what you created has given me food for thought . I’ve access to quite a lot of freshly cut logs next week. You cut with the pith line directly in the midddle of the log and went fairly thin. Then covered bowl with shavings o’nite. I wish you had shown more of your sanding and finishing with more detailed descriptions. Thank you very much for sharing Gary. A truly inspiring and amazing turning.

Thank you Greg. I have a stool in back of me. Used it when my ankle was healing. But not when I was turning it was just for a short rest. Sanding surprised me so I decided to sand it the whole way to 400. I will show the buffing off the lathe the next time I do it. But it is the same other than holding the piece down by hand. Happy you enjoyed the video. Gary

Nice turning from green wood. I look forward to getting g back to my lathe turning wood. I was thinking if I turned some green wood, I might try using a combination of wood shavings and using paper from shredded documents to dry the wood. I don't know if that will work or not, but will give it a try.
@ThePapa1947

Thanks John. Yes a paper bag filled with the shavings will help it dry without cracking. Most of the time you would be doing a 10% walls for using the sawdust and the bag. In my case I wanted it to warp.

Hi Gary. I like turning wet wood. I think the shapes you end up with often are very interesting. If I can get the wood sealed and finished quickly while on the lathe, the movement is minimized and the shapes are a lot more subtle. I’m always surprised when I get very little movement for some reason. We don’t seem to have many oak trees around here, so I’ve never had a chance to turn it. Yours looks like a fun bowl….popcorn for sure!! Cheers,Rick

Thank you Rick. During the ice and wind storm we had the neighbors had on Oak tree fall on their house and then cut another on down. Years ago we took one down because it was lifting our driveway. I got burned out making a lot of oak furniture and cabinets years ago when it was the rage. Turning a piece was fun. Thanks for watching, Gary

Very nice! It did not warp as much as I thought it would. Had I done that, I would had done a twice turned bowl. (Turn a thick heavy bowl, dry it out and then a finished bowl) but the way you did it was awesome. Thank you and keep the videos coming.

Great Bowl. I was wondering all through the video why you were not going to rough turn the bowl ,and then let it sit until it was dry enough to finish turn. Got my answer you wanted it to warp. That warping added to the bowls character!! Great choice !!!

Thank you very much John. I have only rough turned. It also tends to break up my interest in the bowl to have to come back months later. I suppose if I was selling it might be another story. Happy you liked this one. Gary

That looks great. A perfect example of letting nature give you something better. This looked deep enough that you could've gotten a smaller bowl from this. Did you think about it?

Thank you John. Give nature a chance and you can get some nice surprises. I do not have a coring system and very seldom have a use for one. I suppose I would use one if one of those companies wanted me to test one out LOL. At least I save this piece from being firewood is how I look at it. And the shavings go on my wife's flower garden.

How cool is it that it dried and warped so proportionately. I could see the face in it very clearly. Pareidololia is the name for seeing faces in inanimate objects. If you google it it explains it out better. Keep on keeping on your work is awesome.

Gary, when you get a piece of wood that’s that moist once you cut it down like you’re doing and get the bowl where you like it how much does that reduce the water content in the bowl after it is done spinning?

Hi Ken. I find when I get it that thin it sands like a dry piece of wood. I am sure there is a little moister in it but not very much. With Apple I like to make them even thinner. They really warp. I have a real cool one that my wife claimed so I may have to find some fresh cut Apple so I can have one LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary

THANK YOU GARY.. Seem like not to many folks turn green wood? It is nice to see some Oak with zero cracks (I guess the benefits of green turning?) I like this technique of making an oval bowl on your lathe. So now thinking how would this technique work if you made a dizzy bowl out of all green wood?... Gary I had trouble seeing the face but I guess that's because I do not have your imagination (I also can't see the man in the moon either, ha) Until next time Gary... TM
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 7 ай бұрын
Thanks TM. The main problem with warping a dizzy bowl is the glue would not hold very good on wet wood but I like the idea. I very seldom see the faces till I pick it up to show at the end. Then they seem to pop right out. See ya later, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 Gee Gary, I am still thinking about that. Having a warped dizzy bowl would create a double dizzy, ha??? That would really take the dizzy bowl to it's next level of craziness creating a 3-D dizzy?... Oh My Gosh... What if a small experimental greenwood dizzy bowl using super glue? (I know "calm it down Tuffy")

What a special piece of oak to have 58 percent moisture, and warp so little. Also, there does seem to be a correlation between age and tiredness 😅. Pace yourself, and let your body tell you when it’s time to call it a day.

No rush at all. The plan was to get it to warp and it did. I have done a few twice turned bowls. I just do not like turning something and going back to it months later. I suppose if I was into selling I would do twice turned a lot. Thanks for watching, Gary
