Note: i just wanna express that i still enjoy the shows i exampled, i said in the video they have a lot of positive merit. This videos complaining about the pacing of these shows, and how they can get in the way of the actual good stuff the show has, NOT an overall critic of the actual shows themselves.

Personally i think there should be an "episode 0" (a prologue i guess) where every character cam be introduced without it dragging out the first episode length

I'm so thankful I never did this with my first episode/pilot, but rather had a topic that went around, and the audience got to see the whole small cast's opinion on it, while also getting to know them. The episode is 4 minutes long.

The bloated object show casts are a microcosm of BFB; They saw success with 64 characters, others would eventually follow. BFB has its own issues, but I feel it's able to get away with its cast size a bit more since it has a much more established history, whereas any other show would have to introduce the entire cast from scratch, which makes it take so much longer than it honestly needs to.

I personally think AB handles pacing alright. It's not perfect, but i can't say its horrible. MOSS's pacing is SO BAD. It's the main reason why i dont like the show. Everything else about the show is great, but the pacing is god awful. The only object show with a big cast which actually handles pacing correctly in my opinion is BFB (which isnt surprising)

i like seeing the characters interact much more than the challenges, since challenges are kinda like just there to drive the episode forward and make characters interact with each other again. thats kinda ll that fiction is about, having characters interact! if the character introduction doesn't work then the challenge wont work either, since it would just be boring characters interacting with each other but also theres a challenge going on, which is just a cheap way to create "tension"
@Coyoboyoo
@Coyoboyoo 4 ай бұрын
I really like how 5SOS:BS introduces it’s characters, the first thing that happens is Grandma leaves and they have to figure out who will host next. They’re already interacting with each other from the get-go instead of introducing themselves. I like when shows allow you to get to know the cast without the need for introductions

just binge watched your object show, and it was very good!, a lot of good things, my only criticism is, well, what you mention in this comment. while the characters get more memorable over time, introducing characters by just going "here are the characters!" is bad because human brains can't retain alot of information all at once, that's why most object shows have a sorta 'before host introduction to the characters' because that is how you introduce characters, slowly, over time. And it also allows for you to show characters personality that can't do much in challenges, and also help you decide certain parts of characters! (e.g let's say a character likes playing guessing games, you could have them play something like hang-man or something similar in their 'before host introduction', this also sets that they can think on the spot, which can be good for challenges and such), though again, your show (object show/ OSD/ OS2) is very good, and the characters become more memorable over-time, so it's isn't that much of a problem, just a simple critic. keep going also! it's very good and i would like to see more :)

Honestly you really speak to me here. Really like how you're not pulling punches and getting to the point fast. I agree to an extent, but I think there's a time and place for introductions, and having a long one but it still gets to the point and properly shows everyone's personality is better than a rushed one. Thanks for the video.

This is exactly why I prefer shows with a small cast. They are not only way easier to follow, but the characters have more chance to be way deeper and more built than just a one line character that appears once for an episode, says their line and then is never seen again.

the problem is less pacing and more character writing watch nearly any new show and you'll find that even after a few episodes you probably won't care about a majority of the cast if not all of them it could be due to a multitude of reasons (falling into an archetype and not doing anything unique, just not doing anything, being annoying, etc) but it generally ends up in not wanting to see these characters for any amount of time, whether it be 30 minutes or 5 on the other hand, take team room 125 and animatic battle. despite being on opposite ends of pacing (10 contestants & episodes a little over 5 minutes if i remember correctly VS 64 contestants and over half hour long episodes) they're both incredibly rewatchable because the characters are fun to see on screen for any amount of time

We only have 1 Character so far! Copy and Paste them 58 times and change visuals, while 2 of them are recolours of each other,and ad 5 Joke Characters nobody cares for"

I have two object shows in the works and I think they both solve this pacing issue: In PFP (35 contestants), I immediately start with the teams. It’s a natural to introduce the characters and their dynamics as well as still having something going on. In FOF (10 contestants), I still kinda have characters talk to each other, but I try to have them do interesting stuff (more than ‘hey, what’s up’). Besides, it’s a smaller cast, so it’s not like I had to spend too long introducing them.

I’m writing an object show that’s on IPhone notes that will never be finished because I can’t animate… 😭 but I agree every character needs a purpose. That’s what I think these shows are missing. every character should have their own personality trait. For instance I have a cast of 14 objects in my show (I’m going for a Survivor style btw) and they all have their own personality traits. Having every character have same traits can get repetitive and boring.

something i noticed is that despite it being 20 minutes to the first 40 minutes, i enjoyed watching ab caffeination day more than i did ab m is for magic i enjoy ab for the fact that it's just chaotic and i couldnt figure out what the hell was going on for a good while, but i also understand that most people would prefer to have a grasp on what's going on while they watch it. still, i enjoyed episodes 2 and 3 more than i did episode 1 i also really like shows with shorter episodes like love of the s*n and it's time for the i think with such a long episode run, youre essentially forcing yourself to lengthen what could be a 15 minute episode into nearly an hour, so everything is a lot slower than it could be going

Yeah, I agree. I personally kinda like those introduction episodes, but I definitely see the problem with them. I'm working on a new show that has a lot of characters, but instead of just having all the characters just stand around for half the episode saying hi to each other, I'm instead using that time to bring all the characters together for an event, that kickstarts the season. Also, nice video lol, I never see anybody discuss pacing in object shows.

I actually really like it tbh. Longer episodes is more entertaining then 1 10 minute episode with a 50 characters! Animatic battle has a lot of characters because it takes place after objects fool. It would be very rushed for for a 50 characters to be showed in a 10-20 minute episode. So in my opinion just leave it how it is
