One aspect I love about an amazing villain is their descent into madness. For Shredder in particular, the decision to mutate wasn’t instantaneous. We see immediately after Bradford mutates into Dogpound how he recognizes the strength of a mutant and decides, as if by default, to make an army of mutants. By Clash of the Mutanimals in Season 3, the turtles have several mutant allies, and are consistently overpowering his henchmen and practically equaling or surpassing Shredder’s strength. I believe it was after this defeat and his roar of anguish that he had the idea to mutate himself. The only reason he wouldn’t before is because he has a prejudice against mutants, actively loathing them, according to Karai, and not just because of the turtles. After Splinter paralyzed him, it seems Stockman chose to use mutagen to heal him (while mutagen does mutate, it can also grant slight strength, telepathy, and regenerative properties in small, controlled states), with the goal of eventually mutating him with a perfected super mutagen. With Karai and Vizioso crumbling his empire, he is against time (another aspect I appreciate from great villains), and rushes to mutation. By Requiem (the best episode in the series), he loves nobody, hates mutants and himself, loves power, yet still holds a twisted sense of honor, regarding his destiny and the Foot, represented by the Kuro Kabuto, which he made sure to stick on his head as he mutated. Leo could’ve maybe won easier in Owari if he played with his honor more, even my sister realized. As Zombie Shredder, it seems he still has Foot honor, less intentions for evil, but an obligation to Kavaxas. With time and destiny having already defeated him, he was perfectly accepting to slightly redeem himself and push Kavaxas back to the netherworld. His telekinetic abilities might even hint to a bit of spiritual refinement during his “eons” spent dead, somewhat replicating a fraction of what Splinter achieved in spirituality. To answer a question asked at the end of the video on his obsessions, I think his obsession against Splinter is justified, but the other acts in which he chooses, such as using Karai as bait or unfairly hating mutants, are not. Splinter reflects each of the turtles in some way, especially before Shen’s death. He is clearly like Leo, is inquisitive enough to understand Donnie, had a temper like Raph, and was silly like Mikey. We see how his Mikey side never really valued Shredder’s problems, often brushing them aside, meanwhile his Raph side never allowed Shredder to vent, which even means Shen’s death is a result of Splinter’s faults. Throughout the show, even as a rat, we see how he isn’t 100% correct or even peaceful. For examples, LH is a monster against his definition, the henchmen couldn’t be given mercy, the turtles successfully rescued Karai, and it was Splinter’s mistake that led to her mutation. In relation to Shredder though, he was on board with killing him in Showdown. Before Super Shredder was beating him, he was in regular fight mode, up until he recognized he wouldn’t win, showing the cowardice Shredder despises. Along with all the family and clan feuds, Shredder’s dislikes against Splinter have been valid. Splinter’s dislikes against Shredder have also been valid though, as Shredder is an absolute hypocrite, literally replicating what Yuuta did by taking Karai.

I love this Shredder. He's such a complex character. Most incarnations are just evil for the sake of being evil. This Shredder is more like a petty man-child suffering from arrested development. He simply cannot comprehend that his misery is 100% his own fault, so he projects it onto Splinter. He's too immature and weak-willed to man up and take responsibility for his behaviour because doing so would force him to admit that he's a flawed human being. That consistently delusional mindset of "it's not my fault" ends up destroying him. Even Karai wants nothing to do with this obsessive madman. I can buy that Shredder genuinely loved her but he's in such a self-destructive cycle, that he ends up destroying his relationship with the one good thing in his life. It's tragic but also completely self-inflicted. However, unlike most weak-minded, self-destructive man-children, this Shredder is also legitimately intimidating. He never loses his aura of menace despite his extremely flawed and immature psychology.
