From Noisey.com: "Phanerozoic", the new, two-part album, picks up exactly where the last note of "Precambrian" faded out almost 11 years ago. The eponymous record describes the latest geological age and is literally translated to “The Age of Visible Life.” The first part of the record will be released in September 2018, and the second one is dated to come out in 2019. The first audio is now being recorded in Iceland. “We were looking for an isolated place in a cold and beautiful environment to get us into the right mood for making this record,” says Robin Staps, the guitarist and mastermind behind The Ocean. “The new album will start off bleak, cold and heavy... and then evolve and diversify throughout the second half.”

Say what you want about Loics vocals. I genuinely love the Rhyacian 2018 version. Does it top the 2007 version? No, No it doesn't, however I love his take with it, and while the bands new vocals fit a more clean vocal loving audiences, the songs still have in depth meanings to them. Just like Precambrian, the newer albums still have important meanings to us as a species. Phanerozoic 1/2's whole idea is Eternal Reccurance, however, it teaches us about the theme of the Paleontological world before us. To be fair, Precambrian is amazing with its aggressiveness, but it fits, as Earths younger days were chaotic and intense, but by the time it settles with the beginning of Phan 1, it gets more cleaner, but still quite brutal to signify, while Earth isnt the intense hell hole it was, it still has challenges for life, it has mass extinctions, glacial events, ages of different species, great dyings, and so much more. While the new albums arent as complex as Precambrian, they still hold a place and fit the message. THAT is my view here.

"Rhyacian" was perfect back then, don't know why there's a re-recording of the best track this band has made so far. The only good thing about it is the more present bass guitar, imo. Not a fan of Loic's clean vocals here; they miss the depth and always sound the same, no matter how hard he tries to be melodical and all. He has his own style and his voice is not unpleasant; just not fitting and lacking the atmospheric link to the rest of the song. I'll stick to the original.

One thing I will say about the 2017 version of Rhyacian is that while the second half that everyone was expecting to hit as hard as the original does somewhat fall flat, the FIRST chorus instrumentals in the 2017 version have a SIGNIFICANTLY better tone and the song sounds much more full, which in my opinion is how that part should have been. I love that part in the original, but man holy fuck the 2017 version is so full and rich, it actually makes it sound kinda empty during that part on the original. Its incredible

When it was first posted, my heart sank... I thought the whole record was re-recorded and I'd somehow overlooked that fact. I calmed the fuck down when I learned it was just the first track, but it still kinda stinks that that track's impact will feel dulled. I love this band, and I have to say, I feel almost completely alone in thinking that Loic's (their permanent singer's) voice is... awkward. I don't think they've ever matched the intrigue, scale, and scope that this record has, and I think it's so much on account of the variety of vocalists present here. Thoughts?

Sadly, I think that "Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic" doen't even closely stand the musical efforts and complexity of "Precambrian". The former is much more easy-listenable, simple and less deep... more "standard"; songs have a more typical structure and are composed of a minor number of interesting riffs, odd time signatures and arrangements. Sound is less raw, in the instrumental as in the vocals. The latter takes much more time to be appreciated but contains so many more interesting musical ideas and is way more able to create an unique atmosphere that I find properly connected to the geological thematic. I find both an hell of lava explosions and the silence of a rocky unhabited earth in "Precambrian" and I'm deeply affectionated to this album. But, after all, 12 years have past between the two and I couldn't expect them to be perfectly matching. This is just my opinion obviously
@GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze Жыл бұрын
While I agree Precambrian is no doubt better, the difference is not that much. Phanerozoic I might be slightly simpler in areas, but not in its philosophical scope, which it pulls off perfectly with its musical approach. The first half feels a little murkier because of the theme of the proliferation and evolution of multicellular life being confined mostly to the ocean, then it airs out through devonian, and becomes more “rocky”, it kinda slams down a little harder, and feels less fluid, which I find fascinating, and the lyrics do a fantastic job of tying the modern human condition into the eras of earths history just like Precambrian, but it doesn’t sound like precambrian because earth has changed in the Phanerozoic Eon. It feels less infantile as well, I noticed the use of piano and violins on precambrian actually builds a sort of “person on their death bed imagining childhood” kinda feel, and thats also fascinating when you imagine earths history as a lifespan of a living being. Phanerozoic feels like it is beginning to fill with life and yet it is turbulent and violent still, sort of a teenage years. In this way, The ocean have more or less depicted the human era as Earths mid life crisis, or maybe even deeper, in the depiction of the struggles of trying to raise a child, to be able to leave the nest as strong and capable. The final song on Holocene doesn’t seem to depict anything close to the end of a journey. In fact it much feels like it drops us on a cliffhanger of a mystery we will never get to see solved, but we are still a part of this entire story, and is it beautiful that we live in THE time that the single most important thing to happen in this planets entire history is about to occur, intelligent life it spawned and raised becoming multi-planetary and leaving the nest for an unknown future nobody alive today, or in 1000 generations will begin to understand. And we exist not only in that time, but in the same time period, we have an absolutely beautiful species defining piece of musical art to capture its significance, and feed it to us. Its humbling to be alive today

Well, that re-recording of Rhyacian reminded me how Precambrian was the last good album from that band. Later works don't come close in terms of intensity and the new singers are just so average they could easily fit in random pop or emo bands. But this is a killer album though, thanks for uploading it.
@bousculade10354 жыл бұрын
They changed their style, which is good. Pelagial is often considered their best album, and Palaeozoic shares similarities with it, making both of them complex albums with really good compositions (especially Palaeozoic imo, it has better atmospheres than Precambrian). Also, Rosetti is a really talented singer that could perfectly have been a singer in the Aeolian/Fluxion period of the band (there's a live recording of Comfort Zones with him, he completely nails it), and he does a really good job at alternating clean and screamed vocals especially in Palaeozoic (just listen to Cambrian II and Permian). In comparison, as much as I like Fluxion's reissue, the original album and Aeolian are both weak points in the band's discography. The vocals are absolutely insane but the compositions are way less complex and the band is still searching for their style. Precambrian is definitely the best tho.
@GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze Жыл бұрын
This bands entire purpose is an evolution. And it has been an amazing one. It’s just the worst mistake (or possibility best decision) Robin ever made was going from Precambrian to heliocentric and anthropocentric. It’s going from by far their best album, to (arguably) their worst, which is in no way disparaging the quality of heliocentric, because if you examine the albums comparatively, heliocentric is not less complex, it’s not lacking in production quality, it doesn’t have really any lyrical weak links although Precambrians lyrics are way better, and it isn’t lacking in creativity imo, it just sounds different from Precambrian, A LOT different. And I think Precambrian coming right before heliocentric, along with the album being sort of a polar opposite (on the oceans scale) from Precambrian musically, plus the new sound including much more clean vocals with a more intimate musical approach, caused fans of the band to just write heliocentric off without really giving it time to grow on them. It’s an amazing album with so many beautiful concepts, and now we have the Phanerozoic albums easily living up to the expectations of Precambrian even though I once again think Precambrian is a bit better, and with Holocene on the way they are showing complexity and creativity that surpasses Precambrian in my opinion, just not in heaviness, which is fine to me, because the music is still insanely heavy when Robin wants it to be, it is not gone, it’s presence has simply shifted focus for the sake of the concept being written. Genius writing in my opinion.
