As a transgender woman myself, thank you so much for bringing up I Saw The TV Glow as a recommendation. I think stories like that are the most important they have ever been no matter how inaccessible they might feel to watch if you are not trans yourself. Myself and my girlfriend genuinely cried all night to the point where I had to stay at her house because of how affecting that movie was us in a year like this one where trans rights are completely on the backslide. I think that way more people, especially on the goddamn internet, need to be challenged with stories like that - family animation is amazing but it by design cannot challenge yourself to feel the feelings of something like that film. I was near hysterical. I was scared for an unseen future of fictional characters.
@arglebargle5531Сағат бұрын
Not invalidating your general point, but I would watch out for "more important than they've ever been" statements, as they tend to downplay the post. For reference: see Fritz-Lang's works in the 1920s where he (a Jewish filmmaker) attempts to warn against the Nazis (M) and reckless industrial capitalism (Metropolis), to name just two examples that show that fiction that addresses what's happening now is not more important than fiction produced in the past.

In regards to what you said in the second half of the video, I would literally LOVE more content on musical theatre and video games from you. I also know that a ton of animation lovers tend to be really passionate about indie animated stuff that isn’t as well known. Me personally, I would so much rather watch a video on a movie, show, or musical Ive never heard of before instead of another KZbinr complain about a very well known bad movie like Moana 2 or wish, cause then I can actually find something new to watch- and I feel like I’m not alone in this stance, cause isn’t that just what movie lovers do?? Tbh, I feel like in this situation, the fact that there are SO many well known KZbinrs who focus on mainstream animation might benefit you in trying to expand the thing you make videos about. Obviously, I understand you saying you can’t drop mainstream animation videos completely, but at the end of the day (and this goes for any KZbinr, really) i belive that if you make the kind of content that makes you happy, the right audience will come to you.

At least the MCU had plenty of content for scripwriters to lean on when writing multiple films per year, but Moana is a completely original property that is just going to need more time to develop these stories for. Not entirely. There are stories for Moana given that the first movie was a fantasized version of real events that happened in the Polynesian islands and also added in Polynesian folklore. But yeah it is harder to make a plot for them than it is for MCU films given that they only have what is essentially a very early rough draft to take inspiration from.

True. Almost no other animated movie in the history of Disney or Pixar has ended with a stinger for the next film, neither before or after the credits. Disney and Pixar post credits scenes are usually jokes, not stingers. The only exceptions being the movies like Stitch the Movie, which are pilots for TV series (much like Moana 2) and set the plot of their series in their last scene; and the only movie to have an actual post-credits stinger, which is Lightyear from 2022.

Yeah, mainstream films can still be masterpieces that shouldn’t be ignored like Inside Out 2, Wild Robot, and Transformers One, but there’s many outside of that that should also be seen, like Robot Dreams, Look Back, Flow, and Memoir of a Snail (all of which are awesome and I am grateful to have had the ability to see most of them in theaters during college). You’re also not trying to shame those who mainly enjoy big studio animation, but trying to encourage them to give movies outside of that of shot. If some movies don’t appeal to them with their subject matter or story, that’s fine, but they may find at least one that does.

I’m a child of the animation industry, my father worked at Pixar up until the recent layoffs. He’d wanted to get away from the studio for a while now, not anticipating to stay there for the 19 years he did. Now he’s making smaller projects and working on things he likes. Don’t spend your life working for something that will spit in your face, spend it doing something you love. I’ll be waiting for your 2025 releases, hungry for more.

10:58 I 100% support this. Over the years, I have found a lot of good (and some even great) obscure animated films that sandly go under the radar or they are ignored because they're not mainstream enough. Not all of them are for kids but some examples are: - all of Catroon Saloon's films (I know they got Oscar nominations, which is a huge achievment, but I feel like people ignore them because they're not Disney/Dreamworks/etc.) - all of Satoshi Kon's films (I think Tokyo Godfathers is the only "kid-friendly" one) - Ernest et Célestine (2012, French-Belgium film) (same case as Catoon Saloon) - Mune: Le Gardien de la Lune (2014, French film) - A Monster in Paris (2011, French film) - Nocturna (2007, Spanish film) - Unicorn Wars.(2022, Spanish-French film) (not for kids) There's also the others that I haven't watchet (yet) but I heard they're pretty good: - Mad God (2021): a stop-motion American horror film.(not for kids) - Zarafa (2012, French-belgiam film)

I completely agree with Schaffrillas at the second act. I just finished Jentry Chau vs The Underworld which didn't get marketed at all. My friend recommanded it to me and blue eye samurai, but my addicition to dinosaurs and prehistoric animals always got me going "I'll get to it later." There's so much more to life to movies, shows, and stories you're use to. Go beyond, think about other projects, bigger or smaller. See how they can inspire you.

Jentry Chau was fucking amazing, and i havent seen a single KZbinr even talk about it. Netflix dumped it out and no one cares at all. its one of the best shows ive ever seen.

I'm fine with endless Moana sequels if it means that Tamatoa will eventually get his own TV show/movie.

Most of the people on KZbin i watch for them instead of what they're saying. I could watch Schaff talk about architecture, and I'd love it. Go ahead, talk about what you're passionate, cause I'm sure you'll have viewers Also, i clapped when you mentioned Look Back. One of the best of the year

Wise words, Schaff. You've really expanded my view on movies and shows and I'll check them out sometime. I'll watch your recommendation videos when they come out, looking forward to them and happy you're focusing on what you're passionate about. 😊 Now to check out the rest of your Pikmin videos because while i haven't played the games, I'm happy to hear you talk about something you're interested in and learn more about it.

What's infuriating is that Disney's could make a new IP about anything, and people would still watch it regardless of quality because it's Disney's- but even that is becoming too much effort for them

I just wanna say thank you for the last half of the video. I’m so tired of people using the same popular American animated movies to make the argument that “Animation is cinema” or “Animation is not a genre” but they never try to branch out and search for more obscure properties. Animation as an art form has a rich history that branches out across the world and even before Disney that most people just aren’t interested in. I much appreciate your attempt branch out from the typical western companies in search of other more obscure projects.

Honestly I've really wanted to see some more video game analysis on here since the end of the Illumination video, where it was mentioned how important Mario is to you. I remembered thinking when I watched that part "Man, a Mario Odyssey review from Schaff would be totally awesome." (Actually I may have commented that, too, when I think about it) I guess just the idea of more video game analysis on the channel is exciting because a happy Schaff being passionate about stuff is the best Schaff

I actually got to see an Early Screening of Memoir of a Snail through my University, and I actually wasn't going to go originally since I wasn't too interested in it, but I can safely say it's either my favorite or 2nd favorite Animated Movie of the year (between that and Wild Robot for me). It's such a powerful movie that touches on very sensitive topics, but it's definitely needed especially with where we're at as a society right now. I think I cried 4 different times watching it, and I can't express enough just how much everyone needs to see this movie because it's so good Also when's the Arcane reaction coming out

Saw the movie with my little cousins who are all like 8 years old on average, and they all started laughing during Moana's "death" scene, and started referencing it moments after leaving the theater. I'm pretty sure this new franchise will do just fine.

really appreciate the recommendations at the end. i know the medium is way more than disney and dreamworks n shit but i've always wanted to broaden my horizons when it comes to animation. i'm just really inefficient at watching anything so i kinda have like a gigantic backlog of older (in a lot of cases mainstream) movies to get through, and that distracts me from looking into newer, obscure things in general using your influence in the youtube sphere to recommend more obscure flicks is respectable as all hell, and trojan horsing them into what seems like just another Modern Disney Bad video is really smart. it's rare to see a huge youtuber with the level of awareness of their influence that you have

You know, I never really thought about it, but I really do only watch main stream animation. All the movies I've watched recently of my own volition are just Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, etc., and I had no idea how much I was bottlenecking my own entertainment. I want to get into the filmmaking process once I go to college, whether that be as a writer, animator, editor, etc., so I guess now is about as good a time as any to finally broaden my horizons Crazy how my first adult decision is deciding to watch movies other than Disney

Your recent sandwich 6 and the odd star wars ranking inspired me to watch every single animated movie containing an earthworm and rank them for my friends Which lead me to find some of the worst animated movies i had seen and some of the best And those movies def made me realize there is so much interesting indie movie projects, i previously was almost completely unaware of

It's actually really nice to see you acknowledge your place in animation discourse and actively push against it. Some people really do like to rag on you just because you yell about dehydration guns or whatever else, but like, it's funny. And more importantly, anyone who watches more videos from your channel other than the ones that go super viral and spawn the memeable out-of-context clips know that stuff like that is just an act and certainly isn't your sole focus. You're a super smart guy, James, and I respect your desire to wanna break out of the mainstream animation bubble and bring others with you. I'll be along for the ride regardless but hopefully you can convince some other animation-only people to branch out and try more things. Best of luck to you! And hopefully Moana 2.8 Director's Cut will be the start of the glorious Tamatoa arc.

If I could give a smooth way into more unique animation, try the Best Animated Feature nominees. Obviously you don’t need to watch everything, don’t lose sleep over the bad ones as requirements (which what do ya know are almost always mainstream) but if some are so good they could break through the animation Oscar barrier and actually get nominated for the art they are, that probably means they’re really good. Robot Dreams, Anomalisa, A Cat in Paris, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, The Triplets of Belleville, I Lost My Body, the list goes on. Hope this did anything for anyone!

Megamind is my favorite movie of all time, not because I only watch mainstream animated movies, but because I watched it as a kid and have incredibly fond memories of it. I was a Megamind fan before it was cool! But seriously, I totally understand your decision Schaff, and I wanna say thank you because your channel is the reason I watched experimental movies, anime, musicals (mostly hamilton but still), the clone wars and nintendo games. Continue to make things you're passionate about! It will make more people passionate about them!
