There is always speculation on teams getting moved and yet very few are likely to even reach the negotiating stage. I take a quick gander at the board and go over who is currently in that conversation.

it's almost an hour drive from where I live in North Phoenix. That's the issue with the Canes and the Panthers too, they build a Arena in the Suburbs and expect people to drive out there. And there is no mass transit to get there, you are forced to drive. Arenas are Centralized locations they need to be placed in Urban area if they are going to be successful.

CJ The Canes are about a mile out of the city of Raleigh. Their problem with attracting fans is that Raleigh isn’t a good pro sports city, it’s all about college sports. They really need to move the Canes to Charlotte. There they’ll have a centralized arena, tons of possible season ticket holders due to all the businesses in Charlotte, and they’ll do a lot better. But for whatever reason, they want to stay in Raleigh.

I can see the Panthers moving north to around the West Palm Beach area. The area of West Palm Beach was ranked 10th in the nation when it came to Stanley Cup Final viewership. There's no reason the team couldn't be successful there. I however do not see the Panthers moving anywhere out of Florida.

Dr. Disco what is the biggest difference between Tampa and Arizona. Tampa is a solid team that is in the playoffs every year and Arizona hasn’t been since 2011. I guarantee you that if Arizona was going every year and Tampa was lousy every year people would say hockey doesn’t work in Tampa. I blame Arizona’s management especially previous management not the fans.

The reason Carolina hasn't had much fan support is because they've been so bad over the years. And that honestly happens with every struggling fan base look at the hawks attendance before Kane and toews or the penguins before Crosby and Malkin. But I really think with the canes on the rise more fans will come out to support.
@CaniacManiac30
@CaniacManiac30 6 жыл бұрын
I definitely think so. The blackhawks were 29th in attendance in 2006. Then they drafted Kane and toews and 2 years later they jumped all the way up to first. Success definitely correlates with fan attendance. Once the canes start having success again (and I think they will) their attendance will go up it's just a fact.

Carolina had a winning record. They are not a terrible team. Colorado is a terrible team and is going to be terrible for a while. I doubt that they will go anywhere close to the 11K mark. I would get having the worst attendence in the league and being the absolute worst or a team that isn't even trying to win... But a team with a winning record???? The Whalers moved because they didn't have attendance and Carolina will follow suit it's a mater of time and time is running out especially with new ownerships that dropped half a billion dollars on a team. It literally took a lockout and 9 out of 10 seasons of under 500 hockey for the Blackhawks to have less than 12k...

If an arena is to be built in Seattle or Quebec it will be at the cost of the owners. It might even be worth it for them to build one. Thanks for being realistic, and I have 2 quick comments: 1. Barclays Center is nice, but you are correct about it not being hockey friendly. I paid $60 per seat for row 4 on the goal line, and my view of the other goal was there, but the faceoff circle on the opposite end was completely cut off. The Islanders were promoting their "partial plans" where some games are back at the coliseum and some at barclays for next year. 2. Houston should get a hockey team. If arizona can't get people in the seats, Houston will. 4th largest city in the USA, with many people relocated here for work from the northern us or Canada, along with support of locals should be able to fill the arena.

Attendance is second in revenue. The number one revenue is broadcast fees. I'm curious if Quebec City can get a better broadcast deal than Ariz or Fl now have? We already know this Canadian city will likely have no problem withe attendance.

I would see that kind of possible scenarios Move Arizona Coyotes to Houston (bring back to old Aeros) or Kansas City. Move a team in danger, Ottawa Senators or Carolina Hurricanes or Florida Panthers to Quebec City in brand new Videotron Center. With an expansion in Seattle, both conferences balance again.

I say either Wisconsin, KC, or Seattle gets an expansion team WIS or KC would balance the central out with the rest of the NHL if they give a team to Seattle it'd push a team probably Vegas into the central so most likely it'd be Wisconsin to get an expansion that's the most reasonable to me anyways

Coyotes need to move to Phoenix or even Scottsdale. That stadium is out in the middle of nowhere, and the big money the hockey team needs is in the east Valley not the west Valley
@CJbrinkman602

Bryan G yep it's almost an hour drive from where I live in North Phoenix. That's the issue with the Canes and the Panthers too, they build a Arena in the Suburbs and expect people to drive out there. And there is no mass transit to get there, you are forced to drive. Arenas are Centralized locations they need to be placed in Urban area if they are going to be successful
@endersdragon34
@endersdragon34 6 жыл бұрын
CJ even when I lived downtown I hated going out that way unless it was a weekend game. It's such a stupid place for a stadium because for anyone on the East valley to get over there they either have to take the 10 through downtown (which that can take you an hour to drive 5 miles on a weekday) or take the 101 clear around. While yea that's a problem the other way too... The East valley has the money and downtown would be nice and neutral (and if they could use the Suns stadium you already have a really good stadium, albeit for the wrong sport)

As long as another corporate entity doesn't take ownership of the Blues like Ralston-Purina did, there's next to no chance the Blues move. Now that they've hoisted Lord Stanley, that chance just greatly diminished. Given St Louis is now only a two sport town, we'll continue supporting the Blues even if they never again make the playoffs.

4:35 aaaand flashbacks of 2007 come to mind; when Jim Bausillie (the Co CEO of Blackberry at the time) tried to buy the team from Craig Leipold and move them to Hamilton; and Predators fans made a resounding "OH HELL NO" and the current owner consortium Predators Holdings LLC was formed by Nashville business owners wanting to keep the predators where they were. and last year's epic Cup run has pretty much cemented the fact that the Preds will NEVER EVER leave Smashville, and because we have the reputation of the best fans in the league.

Canes fan here - obviously we've been ugly attendance wise recently, but the downtrend only started in 2015. We were averaging 15k+ before the 2015-2016 season. It's easy to lose fans when you go on a playoff drought for nearly a decade. The Canes also have a BIG tv market with fox sports carolinas/south/southeast. They have N/S Carolina, parts of the Atlanta market, and I even saw them on tv in East TN this year, so they apparently share part of that territory with the Preds. Curious what their ratings are since they've been so unattractive to the casual viewer, but the potential is there, and they've been a solid ratings team in the past.

Dustin Boffo I live in Raleigh as well, season ticket holder for the Canes. While I'm not a Canes fan in particular, I still go to watch the other teams. The team has definitely seen better days, they used to almost sell out every game before their big drought. The market and interest is there, especially with how fast Raleigh is growing, it's just that when you have a bad product on the ice for a long time, no ones going to watch it. I'm confident the Canes will have better attendance this season since it looks like they may be playoff bound for the first time in a while.

Pittsburgh is consistently among the largest tv audiences out of the american markets. Even during the lean years; they still pulled in good tv ratings. Pittsburgh is a good hockey market. It is pretty common to see numbers drop off when a team looks like it is about to abandon a city. Not really indicative of much, almost all teams go through lean years in any sport.

Pittsburgh was 4th in attendance last year even though they are one of smaller markets in the league and were at the top in ratings last year. Don't think they'll move Carolina anytime soon. Raleigh is an emerging market and is on pace to become a top 10 market in the United States in the next ten years. If anything, I think they'll move them to Charlotte to try and draw in the South Carolina market like the NFL and NBA did. Carolina just needs a winning team again and attendance will be back in the middle of the pack.

Agreed, but before the diabolical playoffless run they've been on these last 7 or 8 years I think they were somewhat in the middle of the pack. Fans around the country will make some noise about moving but I don't think it'll happen, especially given Raleigh and the Triangle's emergence. As Carolina makes some noise I think they'll establish a new core of fans and stay in the area for at least 10 more years.

For those that don't know the train is right in between both teams and about 0.2 miles from the entrance to the stadiums. Entrance to entrance it is only about 0.5 miles. This is suppose to cost around 7-10 billion dollars and I believe they said both team renewed the contracts for the next 20-25 years.
