Man, the title isn’t kidding. This was an ODYSSEY and a half! There’s just so much to like here. They went from genre to genre, sound to sound like a warrior in a battle for the ages! It was so epic. Like really epic. This might be one of the best progressive metal songs of all time. Seriously.

This song is truly a journey, ranging all over different styles, ebbing and flowing with the story of Odysseus. Love the end when he finally returns home after 20 years and kills the suitors. Russell Allen has such a smokey and mellow voice and is perfect for this song. Add the incredible Michael Romeo on guitar/orchestral keyboard, Michael Pinnella (goldfish) on keyboard/piano, and Jason Rullo on drums and you have an epic masterpiece. Michael Romeo wrote the music and most of the lyrics, and this was originally recorded in his home studio (the Dungeon). For your next long epic consider Blind Guardian's "And Then There Was Silence." Hope you feel better soon, I heard that "nickel" is good for illness, and keep rocking.

yaaaaaasss, the Odyssey!!! Whenever I had a bad day, I play this while driving home from work, with all windows open and as loud as I can. While headbanging in the beautiful syncopated crazy rhythm of the drums in the intro :D Glad you liked it too! So, I got the nickel. but what about the goldfish? 🤪

I don’t think people are ever truly ready for Symphony X when they first hear them. As a guitarist Romeo is just light years beyond most players and his creativity is alien, I asked myself as a musician “what have I been doing with my guitar playing?” Lol

Symphony X is so good it's mindblowing, I never get tired of listening to them... Goldfish!? Nickle! Great reaction, I almost envy you diving into SymX, I remember listening to their third album for the first time and just laughing in disbelief and shaking my head like "WTF IS THIS AWESOME MUSIC!!!???" Had to listen several times over and over to eben understand and get all the little details. And the the same with every following album. I hope we get new music from them soon...

This is the best Symphony X song for me, because it has every aspect of their creativity. "If you want to know what Symphony X is - listen to the Odyssey")) They have a lot of cool songs, but this wraps up everything)) It has symphonic part, acoustic ballad part, Pantera-like part, Iron Maiden-like epic final, combined with prog elements with orchestra...even some electronic sound parts.... Most of what you're commenting on is one person - Michael Romeo. He is the guitarist as well as the composer. Many of those keys are synths he programmed and wrote the melodies for.

My buddy and I used to listen to this album a ton in high school and he had a book test on the Odyssey. He didn't read it but still got an A from listening to this song so much. Obviously a classic, but my next recommendation would be a heavier track of theirs, The Walls off Babylon off my favorite album Paradise Lost. That's an extremely underrated album from front to back.

Michael Pinnella is the keyboard player. He is very very talented, but the mastermind behind this song (or 99% of Symphony X) is the guitarist, Michael Romeo.... he is their "Mozart" genius. He writes everything and then sends it to the other members for then to slightly modify or play on their own way, but on this song, Romeo basically did it all himself.

This is my desert island song, my one song to listen to for the rest of my life if I could only pick one. Well maybe tied with Octivarium from Dream Theater, another epic masterpiece and I do not use that word lightly. I've listened to this song hundreds of times and I still get excited hearing the overture start in the beginning. I'm sure people have filled you in but this song does tell the whole story, even the instrumental moments are set to match the scenes that are taking place and there is a long reddit post somewhere that literally goes through section by section and talks about what is happening in the story, pretty interesting read if you get curious. Yeah man, more SX for sure, you got plenty of killer suggestions here so I'm going to throw out a few other bands and songs for you to check out that you haven't touched yet. Cliffhanger by Shadow Gallery, Architect of Fortune by Circus Maximus, More than I could Chew by Mastodon, Whatever Makes you Feel Superior by Toehider (Mike Mills band from all the cool Ayreon stuff), and Alley Cat by Seventh Wonder... oh and have you ever heard of NICKELback? cool underground prog band.
