I always felt bad for Michael because his self esteem was so low that he felt the need to be a loner who degraded everyone so much that in his eyes he was still better. It's a sad form of narcissism. It needed a bit of comedic relief to balance it out, and it also needed to reveal why Pam was worrying so much about Jim. Also the scene where Kelly "supports" Pam was gold.
