I studied for 6 months in Paris and one of the things I absolutely loved is how chill everyone is. After living in Mexico City for 5 years, it was such a nice experience. Seeing people be in parks at 5-6pm because they're already off-work, having weekends feel like actual weekends... you can feel the whole atmosphere shift into a full relaxation time, and it's amazing

@Luke Perret (moi aussi je suis vraiment français même si mon pseudo peut prêter à confusion. Mais en fait, "Lets Chill Page" c'est l'anagramme de mon vrai nom et prénom qui sont bien français eux). Déjà, tu vois Paris comme un banlieusard, pas comme un vrai parisien. ;) Alors bien sûr, si tu viens de banlieue à Paris uniquement pour ton travail le matin et que tu reprends le métro ou le RER le soir pour rentrer chez toi en banlieue, c'est moins glamour. Mais comparé à des villes comme Mexico ou New York, c'est le jour et la nuit tellement ces deux dernières sont des villes beaucoup (la différence est énorme) plus étendues que Paris. Et donc, ce trajet routinier de ton domicile à ton travail qui te parait être une galère ici, n'est rien en comparaison. Rien que les distances entre les stations te feraient halluciner. La vie est beaucoup plus tranquille à Paris. Ce qui te parait un rythme soutenu ici est une promenade de santé pour un New Yorkais. Nous, dans la plupart des cas (ça dépend des métiers bien sûr) on a nos week-end complets, beaucoup de jours fériés en plus, mais aussi beaucoup plus de congés annuels que dans d'autres pays. Nous prenons le temps de vivre (même si on devient de vrais sauvages aux heures de pointe dans les transports en commun et que nos montées dans la rame du métro ou du train ressemblent plus au village d'Axtérix qui sort se battre avec les romains qu'à une docile file d'attente entre gentlemen aux guichet d'un champs de course ! lol). ;)

The german and french anthem on the other side aren‘t patriotic at all, and I‘m quite confused as why you think it is 😂 They‘re both literaly only appreciating liberty and democracy, at no point whatsoever they say that France/Germany are the best (or good at all) nations, only that they will fight for the people - that is, because it was written in times of the French Revolution (fight against the monarchy)

Maë ...I’m confused as to why people claim certain cities, states or regions are not part of their country. Being a US citizen, many individuals claim states such New York, California and Florida are not the United States...or *_America._* Of course these states do *_not_* represent the entire United States, but they’re still part of the US, just like Paris is part of France, even though it only represents a fraction of the country. I lived in San Francisco for five years, and yes, the major cities get far more attention than the rest of the state, but once a person leaves the city and drives throughout California, it becomes blatantly clear the different ideologies and lifestyles, and in many ways, friendlier people than in the cities. But that’s the problem, especially in the United States, where the country is geographically massive, and tourists are limited in money and time to see outside the cities and the usual tourists locations. I can only guess it’s a similar problem in France, where tourists lack the money and/or time to visit places outside the usual places, like Paris.

I dated a guy from France for a year and would go to Paris to visit him a lot and I totally and completely agree- at first when I had just met him I thought he was hyper critical of everything, but it really is the fact that they think about everything around them at a deeper level, and so the things he appreciated, he was able to appreciate so much more than I had even thought to consider. Last year I went on a month long Europe trip and I really had no desire to go to Paris but I ended up adding it to my list since it made the plane ticket back home cheaper. I spent 5 days in Paris and fell in love. I felt so comfortable there and felt like I totally fit in, even not knowing ANY French whatsoever. I love that you spoke about us French people being considered rude by other countries. I'm in the opposite situation, I'm French but I live in America. In France we don't do small talks but we usually have deeper friendships, and we're more genuine. When we are friendly with someone, it's sincere. It's something I found really hard moving to America. It's harder to build friendships. You feel sometimes people are being kind to you but actually they don't really care and don't really consider you as a friend.

This was a really cool video! I was raised by my french dad and often visited french family but only moved to France (Paris) ~3 years ago. It's always great to see different perspectives and help me open up about my own opinions of the french. 1. You mentioned the non-touristy charm of Paris, I wanted to add that I love how diverse of a city it is because of all its immigrants, notably arab (eg Algerian) west-african and pacific (eg Senegal, Martinique). As well as the Asian communities that have formed the various China-towns, Little India, etc. You can see how enriched the city has become bc of this and there are so many cool people to meet, and things like the Ganesh festival to attend ^^ 2. The thing about 'settling' for something 'subpar' was interesting - I always thought of the french as picky because they were westerners with the privilege of variety. I grew up in different third-world countries so when you went to the market for tomatoes, say, you just bought tomatoes. There weren't bio or GMO tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, yellow, green, flat. There were just tomatoes. There was no fine-dining (although there was street food, which I miss a lot) or chefs with stars and magazine critiques. But the french are right to have high standards if they have access to that kind of variety, I always assumed they were the pickier of the westerners but that's also why their country has such great food!

I guess it's like any other city in the world. There are always some places you should avoid but the most imortant is to trust yourself. If you feel the street you're walking in seems weird, it's probably because it's weird so, go back and find another way, you know what I mean? Same with people, if you think people around you don't look correct, go back! :) Hope this help!

I went last summer, and I found it pretty safe. I didn’t see any of the infamous street scammers trying to pickpocket me, and most streets towards the center generally had people around. If you’re planning on going and still feel worried if Paris isn’t that safe, then just go with a friend or more.

I love going to Paris I'm half french but live in the united states so when I go to France in the summer my grandparents will take my sister and me to see all the touristy things(2 years ago, one of the places we went to was Versailles) and appreciate Paris together(its very interesting because mt grandmother used to be a history teacher and does a lot of research beforehand so she knows a lot about the history of the places we go)

Aghhh this made me really miss Paris. One non touristy thing to do that I think most people don't know about but it's great to meet young people from ALL over the world: the student houses in La cité universitaire have a lot of free events (piano recitals, dance stuff, gatherings, talks, poetry club, salsa night, etc.) it's usually free or super super cheap and there are people from the student houses that are divided by country, so for example you can go to the argentinian house and see tango or to the japanese one for a recital. It's a fun way to meet people, do something interesting in the week and also on a budget.

Damon! I stumbled across this and found your channel and just love it. I'm and American living in Paris and yup, you are 100% on all of this! One important note though. You said the only reason you're not living here is because of taxes. I just went through all of this, and can say that you have nothing to be worried about. You will definitely not pay taxes twice (to the US and France). It's sure... there are several administration mechanisms in place to prevent this. So you're totally good to live here permanently. I'm freelance and work with US clients and that's what I do!

Bonus fact from a parisian: la Petite Ceinture was a railroad track going around the city (ceinture = belt), its been out of service for years. Some parts are being rehabilitated into public spaces with parks, walks, bike lanes... That's what Damon is referring to here. Some parts have been destroyed and build over, and, most importantly, some other parts are still left alone and closed to the public. That's where Elliott goes in Skam FR. If you know where to look online you can find the points of entrance that are accessible. If you get caught you are usually let go with a warning, a lot of people actually go. It's a famous urban photography spot for example. Now some parts are shady and the terrain can be dangerous so... users discretion I guess. That was my unsolicited Ted Talk. Thank you.

Often what I notice is that Damon has an American perspective that is really comes from his midwestern white experience as an American. As an non-white American from a small city in the North East I can say from personal experience that some things he said he only started to consider in Paris were things Ive thought for a long time, even though I’ve never traveled outside the east coast of the US or lived in big cities. For example not enjoying small talk, being very appreciative of architecture, being critical of the extent of American patriotism and national anthem. Those are all things I’ve been aware of since early adolescence. It just goes to say everyone is product of where they grew up and who they grew up around. And America is so big with so much diversity in people and cultural mixtures it’s sometimes a little incorrect to say “Americans think this way” when even in America we have differing cultures in different regions of our country. [obviously in certain ways Americans are super similar and have common experiences, but in other ways we can have such a variety of experiences that American themselves and foreigners can be unaware of]

French people are really bad at English tbh although Parisians are generally slightly better than the average French, so they will speak French in conversations. But if you find people who actually speak fluent English it might be different, I myself can be the type of person to feel uncomfortable talking French with a learner. It's not because we find you bad at French if we do, it's just like he says in the video we are really awkward and bad with any sort of small talk and often learners (for obvious reasons) stick to that longer which makes us want to switch to English. A least from experience. So it really depends on your French proficiency and the person's English proficiency ahah

I lived in Paris for 12 years and then I moved to Cannes. I miss Paris all the time and go back there whenever I can. I am in love with Paris the same way you are.
