The Offspring - The Kids Aren't Alright, from their album "Americana"
Lyrics -
When we were young the future was so bright (whoa)
The old neighborhood was so alive (whoa)
And every kid on the whole damn street (whoa)
was gonna make it big in every beat.
Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn (whoa)
The kids are grown up but their lives are worn(whoa)
How can one little street
Swallow so many lives?
Chorus:
Chances thrown, nothing's free
Longing for,used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams
Go!
Jamie had a chance, well she really did (whoa)
Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids (whoa)
Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job (whoa)
He just plays guitar, smokes a lot of pot
Jay committed suicide (whoa)
Brandon OD'd and died (whoa)
What the hell is going on?
Cruellest dream, reality
Chances thrown, nothing's free
Longing for,used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams
Go!
Chances thrown, nothing's free
Longing for, used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams

I listened to this during high school... now that I'm an adult, wow. The song's true, I also lost so many friends to drugs. I wish someone explained to me that depression and anxiety would truly kill dreams.

Used to speed down the road, listening to this. Most friends and family move on, others pass on. If I had a choice to re-work my past into something better, I'd probably rather just keep working on what I've got now. People can dream of the past, but it won't do as much good as mending what little you have left. Best of luck to the lot of you out there, trying to make a grey day seem just a little bit brighter.

Wise words, good read. Thank you for this. My ramblings if you or anyone else is interested: I definitely agree that it's better to do the best with what you've already got, whatever it might be, even if it's only a bit, as opposed to constantly wishing you could've done better before. Because that constant agony of regret, it gets you nowhere. In fact, it continues (and worsens) the very problem in itself. A self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts, you could say. While focusing on here and now and what you can do to make a better future, that's what brings betterment in one's life. :)

Its funny how when we're kids we're loving these songs, not even thinking bout the message being delivered to us, til' years later, as adults, when come back to these classics, and listening as the message unfolds and we're seeing clearly of what's going on in the world of yesterday, and today within these songs! The power of music hit different back in the days, all we had to do was listen and learn.

17 is quite young. Stop panicking - here's some free advice, don't take drugs, don't get into drinking, don't spend your energy watching porn whacking off and go to the gym instead. Be healthy, work towards your goals. You'll be alright. The issues you fear can only trip you up if you chase the fake highs and false pleasures of addictive behaviour.

I heard this song when I was 11 and thought “man that’s nuts he must be from some crazy place!”. Now that I know my gang turned out exactly like the kids in the song, it breaks my heart to imagine my 11 year old self listening all oblivious. I didn’t know I was IN the song. When I look at my kids and their friends, I always try to remember that they’re probably IN the song too. Some of them will die young or go down the drain in other ways. I wanna treat those kids like soldiers going to war who might not all make it back. They need all the help and support I can give ‘em.

This song sums up all over the world , growing up. I'm 54 , I Was a punk in the early 80's ( this song borrows a lot from early 80's so-cal hardcore punk ,anyways by time I was 19-20 I was already losing friends to suicide , overdose , and the hits just kept on coming. Thru the years I think of all my friends and acquaintances that died young. Here I am still alive. Guess what !? I'm 55 this year , I still go to every local punk rock show there is , I still drive around town by myself blasting Adolescents and Jerry's Kids etc , I still get in the pit ( a little bit ). I still do things I shouldn't do. I keep pushing at life daring it to push me back , daring it to man up and handle business. There's just a few of us left from the old scene now , we always meet at the punk shows watching the teens walk by , talking good natured smack back n forth. Yea I'm old enough to be your grandpa but I'll still kick your ass buddy haha. Life is beautiful. Nobody ever forget that. Whatever had shit your going thru , it sure beats being in the dirt. If anyone ever feels down, look me up and come to a punk show with us , be young again. Be alive. And ol mister death.... Can kiss my ass!

Honestly my childhood is kinda wasted. I've been teased since 7th grade and barely anyone wants to be my friend. It sucks. I don't have many people who I consider my friends and it sucks. I hate it. I barely even hang out. Life just isn't fair. I don't see why people just ignore you or even be an asshole to you for no reason. Its so cliquey where I've grown up. Honestly I don't even know if I'd go back a few years. Maybe to fix a few things and make some friends but I honestly don't care much. I don't really care about the friends I have right now. It sucks to be the unlucky kid who everyone just teases.

English is not my mother tougue and I used to listen to this song over and over as a teen/kid never paid attention to what it was saying just loved the melody: I was just having fun and skaboading whit friends to it. Until this day to me this song was realated to happiness(dont ask me why I kinda forgot about this song I just had a nostalgia kick) . It is weird because I fell like that being an adult make you realise that the world is not that funny (this song is basicly saying that) and now that I old enough to understand english I realise that even my ''funny songs'' wasnt that joyfull as if growing up is a curse that even affect your memory/nostalgic song. haha anyway this song is still awsome and my life is not that a disaster was just saying a weird feeling I had.
