Hi, Nick...I worked out at Vince's Gym from late 70's into early 80's...and knew Vince. I got along with him fine, and I even worked a couple of months as the night man, while his son was gone. Guy, his son, took the job when he returned. The correct pronunciation of Vince's last name is ...like, 'Jer-ron-duh' ..if you use phonetics. Although he didn't like or use squats...there was a sort of Smith Machine that people sometimes used to do squats. It was mostly used in doing military presses. All of Vince's equipment were things he had had made. I don't recall seeing even one commercial machine in the gym. None were chrome plated. All the benches had been made of heavy wood and the padded areas were covered with heavy brown leather, with upholstery nails usually running along the edge. The dumbbells had the plates touch welded, they wouldn't come off. Dave Draper never worked out at Vince's I don't think..but I saw Howorth there daily...He was always quiet, wore dark sweats...and unless you knew who he was...you wouldn't know him. And though Vince may have said a few things to Arnold, early on...I don't know, as I wasn't there then, Arnold did come in one day...probably around 80 or 81, after he was already in the movies...and wanted to see Vince. He was just visiting...not there for information. I happened to be up front when Arnold came in and Vince was in the back and I yelled out to others, 'Tell Vince, Arnold is out here and wants to see him,' someone did and Vince came out from the back. They got along fine, and were glad to see one another. Vince didn't allow any music going on in the gym. He believed it took away from one's concentration on the exercise. Anyway...that's a few things I remember. I liked Vince..and there was a whole other side to him that was different than the 'rough , tough' exterior one often hears about...Oh, he had that too..but he also had a quiet, nice side...that I suspect one didn't see unless he felt comfortable with them. Robert Blake was also a regular there, and in his book...he wrote a spot on description of that side of Vince. They were friends... Anyway..just wanted to add a few thoughts.

The amount of Dianabol that Larry Scott took was miniscule compared to today's bodybuilders. If bodybuilders would follow Vince's book, The Blueprint for Bodybuilders, they would be learn so much about training and diet. The real difference between then and now is the massive amounts of drugs being used. Plus we didn't have as much to eat back then. I had a friend that looked a lot like Vince, named Tuny Monday, that won a lot contests in the Southwest but placed 14th back in the America when everybody was in one class. A large but smooth Vern Weaver, won that Mr. America. They were looking for that large type of build back in the 50's and 60's. Also realize that we didn't have fancy gyms back then. We trained with very crude equipment and conditions. Many of our bodybuilding contests were held late at night after the weightlifting contests were over. I remember posing in a basketball gym under a light hanging from the basketball goal. Please guys, stop being so negative. Nick does a great job with these videos of old timers and I appreciate it, you should too.

Arthur Jones also had that same attitude. He not only didn't like steroid use but was against supplements of any kind. He believed in lots of eggs and stressed good nutrition. I remember one day when he was pontificating on the subject he just stopped, said "Come with me" and took several of us to the runway where he had several of his planes and helicopters. We got in a small Cessna type single engine plane and headed out over the ocean whereupon he resumed his lecture on proper nutrition while simultaneously playing with the fuel/air mixture to demonstrate how the engine, like the human body, responded positively and negatively to the proper and improper intake of sustenance. After free falling and going weightless a few times we got the picture. I wish you could have met Arthur. You would have loved him. What a character. He and Vince seemed like the same guy split between Florida and California.

Vince had V shaped parallel bars in his gym. The bars were 36 inches apart at the widest point. I've never seen or used any dip bars that were nearly as good as those in his gym. Most dipping bars are too close together and cause shoulder and elbow pain. His bars felt very comfortable and the pumps were amazing. HIs 8x8 workout is insanely good. I've never done anything more intense.

Larry Scott was at Vince`s gym in Sydney Australia in the early 1980`s (no connection to Vince`s in California) doing a seminar and I was lucky enough to be there and Larry said that he was taking Dianobol six weeks before an Olympia competition he was honest and up front about talking steroids but never abused them. Larry was always smiling and light hearted but you could tell he when he talked about training he was a high intensity advocate before Mike Mentzer made it maintstream. He used to say he trained every muscle to total exhaustion that`s how he developed those cannon- ball shaped shoulders of his.

Couple of points: Vince did not invent the preacher curl but he did, with Larry Scott's help popularize it. It was something he brought with him from the Easton brothers gym. Also, he did not invent the sissy squat but attributed it to Monty Wolford, who he considered to have the ideal proportions between upper and middle thigh development. He did, however, adapt it into the three stage movement for which he is known. Vince was an erudite student of the iron game, and a stickler himself for crediting his knowledge and exercises to the right sources, let's carry that on.

This guy was a real character. I met him once at his gym. I'm a semi retired stunt man and was staying at Eric Estrada's house for a few days back in the 90's,( he lives a few blocks away from Vince's in the Hollywood hills). Anyway, Eric invited me to go down and meet him and check out his gym because Vince was training him for a TV movie called Honey Boy. Talk about old school, it was like working out in someone's basement. Vince never made big money but he was very knowledgeable and very likeable guy and had very strict rules in his gym. He told us how he kicked Sylvester Stallone out of his gym because he was working out with no shirt and was posing in front of some of the mirrors. What a crack up.

I read his book, in time when he competed, having for example middle part of things developed, they considered that unnatural. He was also famous because he used to kick celebrates from his gym because they did not respect unwritten rules like: asking for music in gym, doing calves with snickers on, etc.. But actually he was Tesla in bodybuilding world, i used some of his advice from book and i have never ever isolated so much biceps like when i was listening to his advice.

In the mid 70's and me at 16 years old, I ordered one of Vince's body building course through the mail. As I recall, the exercises he advocated seemed to make a lot of sense but that shear amount of nutritional supplements and the hyper-specialized diet regime was mind blowing. I quickly became discouraged as I would have had to take on a full time job (in addition to school) just to afford the vitamins and diet. I also lived in the boonies so there was no local retail outlet for the varied and exotic vitamins that he advocated. Everything would have had to have been mail ordered. Long story short; I then simply started doing "breathing squats" as advocated by Bradley Steiner in Iron Man magazine and devouring weight-gain powder shakes by the canister. BTW, I seem to recall Vince referring to steroid using bodybuilders as having physiques that resembled "bloated sausages".

Oh, I keep forgetting to mention, Vince pronounced his name ji-ronda, not gi-ronda. He was Italian. That volkswagen at 0:52 belonged to Scott (I believe) Harrison, he worked for Vince and was studying to be a priest/minister. He worked out in the mornings, but worked in the evenings a few nights a week. After that you show Arnold, that is Vince's Gym. 0:58 To the left of Arnold's right hand (left side of video, Arnold is facing the camera), there's a picture of Vince standing at a swimming pool. That picture is the picture in his 2nd book, "The Vince Gironda File: Volume II". He was about 43 in those pics. The picture in his first book (The Vince Gironda File: Volume I) was taken on the rocks behind his gym on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City. He was 53 in that picture. That picture is dated '56, so you can do the math when he died. That would make him 93/94 when he died. I made a note on his wikipedia page, FWIW. After the Arnold pic you show Draper, 1:18 that's in Gold's Gym. You can tell Draper is taking steroids at that point, already. And those were old shirts, because the shirts from the 80s were black french cut tank-tops. Those tank-tops were from the 70s that Arnold and Draper were wearing and they never worked out at Vince's, he detested them because they used steroids. Do not question natural vs. steroids with Vince, he *NEVER*, and I repeat, *NEVER* condoned the use of them and would kick anyone out of his gym if knew they used them. He would tell them to get the F#@$ our of his gym. I have seen him run people out of his gym, it wasn't pretty...just sayin'...he was 100% natural methods, period. Do not even question it, IMO, it's an insult to him to even say that. It is true that some did use steroids after they had trained with him, Makkawy a case in point. You can see when Mo got big in the later part of his career, he wasn't training with Vince then. You could not fool the man, he knew muscle and bodies too well, if anyone used steroids, he booted their @$$ out of the gym. And BTW, his gym wasn't filled with bodybuilders like Golds was. Sure you could say everything doing isometrics in a bodybuilder, but most all the people were movie industry related, either actors, managers, agents, stunt actors, etc...and nobody who used steroids. That's completely different than Gold's Gym in Venice back in that day...they were mostly using steroids and were focused on professional bodybuilding and/or bodybuilding competition. You would only see a competitor in Vince's gym on rare occasion, mostly to buy a tank-top with his gym's name on it...LOL They would usually leave after he insulted them...LOL

Nick and I want to point out why Vince was so bitter about steroids. You need to keep in mind, that he trained Larry Scott, and Larry was not using steroids, at least when Vince trained him...but right after that, Arnold came on the scene and was taking steroids. All those guys that won thereafter were all using steroids. Vince hated what Weider was doing, but was pretty friendly with Robert Kennedy. He published some stuff, like "A Muscle Has Four Sides" with Kennedy, but Weider's magazine was filled with steroid freaks...Show me one person that won Mr. Olympia after Scott that didn't use steroids. Vince wanted nothing to do with it, a real shame because he understand so much about the body, muscle, genetics, etc...Vince only advocated natural bodybuilding, he detested what happened to the sport, and rightfully so...it doesn't even look natural. Looking at pics of Jay Cutler, he looks like a Marvell super hero...Please encourage youth not to take steroids, it's really dangerous for most people, the side effects are detrimental. We all have a choice. Help promote what makes sense.

Nick, good vid, but here's my two cents--not that anyone wants it. Gironda pushed a protein-heavy diet, but the old-timers before him also pushed for lots of protein. Steak, eggs, whatever they could eat, they pushed it. Vince did advocate amino acids and especially, bromelin, an enyzme found in pineapple stems. It was said that it aided digestion, even though a lot of nutritionists say otherwise. Bodybuilding-wise, Gironda was ripped...I think he weighed around 175 pounds during his competition days, and was the first really ripped guy I can remember from long ago. That look didn't go over well with the judges, but he was ahead of his time that way. Some of his training methods were a little out there, but some were good as well. He didn't favor developing the lower lats, something I've never agreed with. He didn't like squats, but did push for hack squats and squats on a Smith machine. Benches to the neck--shoulder wrecker, AFAIC. Dips with palms turned out, likewise. What I take issue is with his stance on 'roids. He said he was against them, and was a lifetime natural. He probably was, but all the same, he trained his guys when they were on the juice and he couldn't have been so naive that he didn't know something funky was going on. Fighting with Larry Scott over using--maybe. Same deal with Don Howarth...but he still helped them, because, I think, it provided validation for his training methods. Sorry for the long post. You really make great vids. Thanks!

Great video! Met someone years ago who worked out at Vince's gym. Said he Ruled his gym with a Iron Fist. He owned his own business and made his own rules. It was Vince's way or the highway. Did Vince live above his gym? Place is a bar now.

Bulking up is the easiest thing on earth really training big and eating big is easy for builders.Ripping is very very hard, training when you tired, not eating fat sugar salt or carbs its so much harder than building, hitting the treadmill after hours of weights, then sauna, then eating boiled eggs with no salt. But honestly i could do the bulking up phase and love every minute of it.

He was definitely a natural bodybuilder...don't even question it. You obviously didn't know him. As far as his FU attitude, I give him nothing but respect. Speaking of which, you had to earn your respect with Vince to even get to talk to him. Arnold and Draper only went there to buy a tank top, they never worked out there. Vince detested steroids, and that goes for Gold's in Venice and Waldorf, where he claimed they got the drugs. I believe he put the muscle on Larry Scott. I had met Larry in Vince's Gym before. Vince used 1 gram desiccated liver tabs, 60 of those a day with a large meat intake will do it. Don't forget your calcium, manganese, kelp, amino acids, vitamin c, et al, it's hard to generalize on Vince's diets as it's more complicated than just what you eat, it's the supplements you take also...the eggs, making sure you carb load ever 3rd or 4th day when on the non-mixed meal plan, etc...it becomes a way of life. You can't eat food at hardly any places as most of it is just $#!T, to understand Vince's methodology you need to rid your system of processed foods for the most part, don't eat salt or sugar if you can at all help it, work out 5 days a week. If you couldn't stick with it, he didn't want you in his gym. And if you were lucky enough to become friends with him, he was almost always at the gym on Sunday. I cringe when I hear people say stuff about Vince or his gym, most never worked out at his gym or even knew what he was like as a person, he didn't let too many people into that space of his person...

Also remember, Vince was not only about steak and eggs, every person needs to have an arsenal of diets to break the metabolism up. After staying on low carb, everyone will hit a wall. The Air force diet was a low carb diet he recommended that has some non-concentrated carbs. Carb loading was for concentrated carbs, but several diets have some salads or other non-concentrated carbs...every person is different, every body is slightly different...nothing is cast in stone...although you can say the food is. Eat the basics, raw when you can, don't be afraid of natural fats...if you can eat only one thing at a time, your body will better digest it...but how many people can do that for any extended amount of time? I know I can't.

Vince had some weird idea that a bodybuilder's legs should measure the same around, all the way up and down the length of their thighs. Now that's impossible, but he claimed to have trained one guy who achieved that. I'd love to be able to see a photo of what would have to be the piss-poorest legs ever developed!
