I think you hit the nail on the head by the end. It's just down to how fast you can make darksaber, pretty sure. I wrote a python script just to play around with the numbers. You'd need to get saber to swing twice before the scythes can swing once (saber cooldown under 0.7 seconds) to basically guarantee the scythes don't swing outside of the first 3 hits. Though that assumes exactly 1 stam regen per second. Speed up darksaber more and the scythes rarely hit, but you honk a lot. Just add more regen and saber swings "more" but occasionally scythes will steal the stamina. The fact that saber's stam cost and speed is so close to the scythes is the main problem; pre 0.6.1 scythes used to use more stam, which would've made the build more consistent. Really the only thing that looks to help is more speed on the saber.

My favorite old build to use was deck of cards + blood thorn. Anytime Ripsaw wasn’t popular it was so fun.

Yo maybe thats a little too crazy but you could fix stamina issues by giving stone gloves to the death sythes Edit: do stone gloves make things move slower or consume more stamina?

As Long as you have enough space it’s often better to keep two gems of a lower quality.
