Excellent video and a good effort on a long day. A couple of observations with regard to this track and bikes. Firstly with regard to those bikepacking you made some comments - but I saw a video on KZbin of a couple of guys from Australia who are well known for riding 'fat bikes' and did this track fully laden on their 'fat bikes' with ease - the narrowness of the track posed no problem and their fat bikes handled both the ascents and descents with no problems - in fact they seemed to get up the mountains comparatively easier because of the amazing traction that fat bikes provide. Personally I've never ridden one but I am amazed by their versatility. A second observation, from my own personal experience, is that riding the Old Ghost Road is much much much easier on an old school 26er (dual suspension, high specs) than on either a 27.7 or a 29er. The 26er handled every aspect of the track better and was vastly superior in manoeuvering especially with all the switchbacks. When I rode the track on a 29er it was hard work negotiating the zillions of tight bends and took much more concentration and hard work to keep it safely on the track. If you can get your hands on a reliable, well-spec'ed out 26er I can guarantee that you will have a much better (and maybe safer) experience than on a 29er. Well at least that has been my experience.

Great video! It’s on the to do list but always wondered how hard is it in a day…..mid December has the longest daylight hours so can take more time.

I've done Paparoa and Heaphy and Queen Charlotte, this looks a bit harder tho... in particular those narrow tracks with the big drop offs give me the heebie jeebies... Would hate to take a tumble down one of those!

Fantastic. Thanks a lot. Great to see what the track is like. Would love to do it myself but I'm more of a gravel tourer. Think its doable?
@getoutside5195 жыл бұрын
Well these guys cracked it on gravel bikes and made an awesome video about it. They also added quite a bit on top of the old ghost road so its all relative to your fitness, skills and madness level. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqeVaZyDnat1lbM

After 5:30 of riding I'd be into one of those streams in a heartbeat! 😊 Very nice videos of the ride thanks. Did you rent bikes or are they your own bikes?
@getoutside5194 жыл бұрын
The streams were really nice on a hot day. We were on our own bikes but there are rental and shuttle companies at either end if your tempted. Thanks for stopping by and watching.

Did you do the whole trail in one day?
@getoutside5192 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, its a big day out for us for sure we've done it 3 times now in a day between 7 & 9 hours for us. I think its more popular overnighting but then you have to carry a lot more gear. Hope you go ride it sometime its an epic trail. G

So I have just watched 2 videos on this track and one the lady went up the steps and you went down. What direction did you go, south to north or vise versa? The reason I ask is because she also did the Heaphy Track and I am wondering how they will link. You way looked more fun!
@getoutside5195 жыл бұрын
We went from the lyell side through so more east to west. I think this is the more popular direction for Old Ghost Road. People I know who have tagged on the heaphy on the way back also did it this way around. Good luck that sounds like a great adventure in the making.

Have you ridden the ghost road recently ? We both used cross country style bikes, I was on a cannondale scalpel while susie was on the Yeti 4.5. Hope you enjoyed the track as much as we did. Pretty epic landscape.

How long is the climb?
@getoutside5193 жыл бұрын
The first climb over 27km. There's another climb out of the boneyard later on and a short steep one near the finish. We took 3hrs when fit to do the first climb. (without e-bikes which will be a lot faster.) Hope that helps.
