The Old Man and the Sea / Ernestst Hemingway /in Tamil / Bharath Ravindran. Santiago is an old Cuban fisherman. His pain and suffering is the theme of the novel. There is no love, war and death in this novel. The novel tells the story of Santiago's adventure in killing the giant fish marlin and his success in killing the sharks which attack the body of the dead marlin. To some readers it may be incredible. They may wonder how an old man is able to kill the marlin single-handedly. But the story is perfectly convincing. During teh course of the struggle his left hand become useless by cramp and he has completely exhausted. Santiago is imbued with a feeling of brotherhood for the fish, turtle and the birds. His heart overflows with kindness. He fights a battle first with the marlin and then with the sharks. In thee battles he shows a rare courage and stamina. He accepts challenge. He says 'A man can be destroyed but not defeated'. At no stage he lost hope.
