You need a good nose to find your way through the maze of alleyways in this small Dalmatian town on a tiny island. Just like Rocco. Rocco is 40 centimeters tall, has beige and white patches, a dreamy look in his eyes and is a dog. One day he turned up in Trogir and stayed. 1300 years ago, foreigners appeared in this town, which was then part of the Byzantine Empire, settled here and took over the rule of the town. A Slavic tribe, Croats. They called Tragurion, founded in the third century BC, Trogir.

The landmark of the small harbor town is the cathedral. Visible from afar, it served as a signpost for ships and boats looking for a sheltered harbor on the Adriatic. Since ancient times, Trogir has developed into a successful trading town on the Dalmatian coast.
The former prosperity of the small town can be seen in the tower of the cathedral. A prosperity that is now in need of renovation. Scaffolding shows that the monument protection authorities are concerned about the preservation of this magnificent church building, whose Romanesque portal is one of Croatia's sightseeing attractions.
If you dare to climb to the top of the tower, you can see the maze of alleyways as an orderly labyrinth. Trogir has all the elements of an independent city in a small format. It is not only the towers of the various churches that indicate the abundance of architecturally remarkable buildings. Hidden beneath the roofs of many former palaces are treasures that bear witness to the town's high culture.
But the real treasure of this place is not a single building, however important it may be, but the wealth of different impressions. You can only discover Trogir on foot. Only then does the charm of this small medieval town reveal itself in its almost unadulterated unity. At every intersection of the tiny streets with their ever-changing cobblestones, visitors are tempted by old house facades and hidden corners, making it hard to know which way to turn. So perhaps it's not a bad decision to put your trust in Rocco's nose when he roams his territory, as he does every day.
UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Humanity" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” tells of these places in impressive images.
