In this video we visit Lancashire to look at the remains of the 18th Century Hollinshead Hall house and its well house. We start at the Roddlesworth Waterfall. Hollinshead hall house was a country house built in 1776. It was the country manor of John Hollinshead. The house was demolished in the early 1900's and all that remains are ruins. In the grounds of the old house is the complete and renovated Hollinshead hall well house. The well house is a charming grotto constructed in the early 19th century so that pilgrims could take the healing spring water that flowed hear. Initially lauded by Pagans the spring water was later Christian. The spring water or Holy well is said to have healing properties. The properties are said to cure conditions of the eye. Finally in this historical tour of Lancashire we visit Liverpool castle. Liverpool castle was built by Lord Leverhulme. William Hesketh Lever. The Edwardian Industrialist and philanthropist. Liverpool castle is situated at Rivington just outside Bolton. It was a folly built as a replica of the original Liverpool castle that stood in Liverpool. This video includes drone and aerial footage of Lancashire.

"fake castle ruins" - That is impressive to see someone actually build modern ruins. Myself living about 2 hours from Biltmore Estate, I can attest to the surprise when you think you are looking at something centuries old but then realize it was built in the 1880s with running water and electricity. Thanks for showing these. Greatly appreciated.

Well that stirred up some memories! Back in the 70's we would bike it up there from Swinton. Of course we never realized the castle was a folly. Back then you would never have got to the end of that narrow passage! We used to go for a swim in the pond in the gardens near the tower, then bike it back home. Kids nowadays do not know they are born! Tockholes was a spiritual center founded after the ravages of WW1 .... before the diagnosis of Shell Shock! As per usual another Cracking Video!

This has been a wonderful look at forgotten relics, that castle is one heck of a folly! It certainly isn't medieval as no one cut stones like that before the advent of stone saws, it would have been built using rough cut stones. I wonder what history was flooded when they built that reservoir? Most often they tear down buildings and cut all the trees down to make a clean bottom wiping out all previous artifacts of the people who once lived there. The first film of the forerunner of Time Team was done digging a village that was due to be flooded. Mike Aston said too often local history gets wiped out for the sake of modern improvements and people soon forget what was there before the valley was flooded.

It is fascinating visiting all these places around Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire. I will never get to see them again now living 1200 miles south in another European country. One thing I don´t miss is the mud. Our hills, mountains and tracks are on limestone and so the ground drains very quickly and is very rarely muddy. Of course there are plenty of archeological remains from WW1 all around us in the forest. The area was on the front line between Italy and Austro Hungary. One caveat is that if you find what looks like a shell or a hand grenade it probably is so don´t touch and report it to the police for disposal. Hemingway´s Farewell to Arms was based on the battle of Caporetto (now Tolmin) which is just up the road. You occasionally dig up old bullets or pieces of shrapnel when planting a tree or digging on our piece of land.

Between the front door and the two pillars you liked. I wonder if folk were encouraged to sit there, waiting there turn to go inside and get their eyes seen to? Thank god we've can go to Specsavers these days !!! The slow-motion of the falls at the beginning was fantastic as it caught the rain falling too...brilliant effect. And finally, so glad you got another drone, it made both the house, and the castle, layouts much easier to understand. Great stuff!!!

Hello again Martin, Just wanted to say thanks for taking us on another brilliant trip. Well what can I say mate? Three wonderful and amazing finds in one day. Really enjoyed this video. In Chesterfield Derbyshire where I live, there's something like the old well house that I found, but it's an old pumping station at a place called Holymoorside, if you get time look it up on Google, the video you up loaded reminded me of when I went to the place I've just mentioned, it was a cold autumn day, throwing it down with rain and very wet and muddy in places lol 😂 but it was a lovely find, but really spooky inside the old pump house, I also read, but don't want to spoil the story if you ever get to read up on the place, but apparently the old pump house is haunted, if your into that kind of stuff? I believe it's called the Chesterfield Council water works something like that, to be honest I found out about it on another KZbin page called Ms Goddam Robot and she visits and videos places like that in the Derbyshire area and uploads her videos. And Liverpool castle, and the remains of the old manor house, it's amazing what people find hidden in woods these days what another great place to visit. Once again Martin thanks for another great video. Your channel is really interesting. All the best, Stay Safe and Keep well from. Devon Boy (Mike)

Hi again Martin, Just adding to my comments about the old pump house at Holymoorside Chesterfield Derbyshire, if you get time, look up old pump house at Hunger Hill in corporation woods on Google, it'll tell you all about the place and show you some great photos too. I know it's a far away distance for you to visit, but it'll give you an idea of what I've just been telling you about okay. From Devon Boy (Mike)

Grown up loving those ruins, being a Bolton lad. What gems. You'd love exploring the old coal mine workings and reservoir on Winter Hill / Smithills Moor!

I love The Well House....a lot of water there. Surely there would have been a drain to get rid of all the excess if it was running outside. Thanks Martin, another gem of a video.

Great coverage and narration of a fascinating , beautiful location. As good as a visit Martin. All the early stonework around Melbourne was completed by convicts shipped out from the prison hulks in the UK...Some examples remain almost untouched.

Great video Martin. I did notice how footage from the old Well House gave an ethereal presence as you entered.

"Ay, tis grim up North" Love the videos in spite of the mud even though I'm a Southern Softy. My son is currently at Liverpool Uni and I was hoping to take some trips with him in the area before 2020 struck. Maybe next year, here's hoping. You have shown some wonderful places I would love to visit as we really don't have the incredible industrial heritage down here. My area is all about the Neolitic then Roman. But I am sad to see so much has been and is neglected.

Great video Martin. Fascinating story about the Liverpool Castle replica. But what an extraordinary way to spend your money, building a ruin. 👍

Lord Leverhulme built some amazing structures and left quite a legacy . You were very close to where I have caught 2 pike over 20lb . Roddlesworth and lower Roddlesworth reservoirs . It a lovely area up there 🧱👍🏼
