@@netenes1 , technically Latin is not a dead language, since it's the official language of the Holy See and is still used by the Catholic Church in some circumstances. Besides, being knowledgeable is always better than being not, so if you know the correct form of a foreign word it's tasteful to use it. Of course in some cases it's simply the standard using foreign words as indeclinable so one should weight the effects of doing otherwise. But I daresay Latin is a special case since it's been used in academia for centuries to the point that some of its words have been adopted even in the English language and they do actually get declined the proper way - say atomic nucleuses instead of atomic nuclei in a physics course and try not to be laughed at. Anyway, in the end the real reason is the one I mentioned in my original comment: I'm a nerd when it comes to Latin since I extensively studied Latin and Latin literature in high school (here in Italy we, unsurprisingly, have special high schools where Latin is mandatory).

Simon's work is absolutely sublime. I've visited his forge and seen plenty of his work in person, it's pretty much peerless. His waiting list is upwards of seven or eight years now though, so you'd need to be very patient if you wanted another. I intend to commission an Anglo Saxon sword and scabbard at some point.

In certain categories, Raven Armoury still does list starting prices for the category. For example, their Historical Dark Ages page says Viking Swords start from £1,400, which comes out to about $1,850 US, not counting the 20% Value-Added Tax that would go on top of that. Also, I think that is one of their Fulham style. They have a pic of a Fulham on their site, and it has the same very slight leaf shape to it.

I have a Pompeii pattern gladius from Museum Replicas from the 1990s. That's a good blade. It thrusts well and can cut, but the large pommel can be hard on the wrist on the cut. That said, it was a handy size to use in the house, if it came to that.

Romans used a special type of pommel that came pre-detached from the sword for quicker use. In later periods, this design was modernized by lengthening the pommel which was then attached to a wooden shaft for life's convenience. Pretty popular thing among gruts back then. Pilum they called it.

You can find some values on the Raven Armoury website although the Gladius examples shown don't have a prize. But we do know that "Viking Swords cost from £1,400. " and the generic medieval one-handed sword on the site is over £2000. Your guess for the Gladius of at least $800 is probably accurate and probably a bit more.

@alastor1052
@alastor1052 5 жыл бұрын
It's nigh impossible. The chances of you hitting the shaft multiple times on the same spot is non-existant and you need to hit it multiple times to cut it if you're trying with a sword. If it's an axe you're talking about and the angle is right, you could do it in one blow
@silentkiller2mm
@silentkiller2mm 5 жыл бұрын
Depends. Good wood - probably not possible in a real life battle situation. But especially in asia, there have been spears made of bamboo which is significantly --although still not easy to the untrained-- more susceptible to cuts. That's why you have more reporty of spears cut in half in places like Feudal Japan, the old Chinese dynasties or in general the entire SEA region.

Yes, I am, to be honest. Sure, Albions are well made and solidly designed, but when you can get an authentic, handmade sword from the likes of Mateusz Sulowski or Maciej Kopciuch for not much more, I don't see the appeal. I've never been a fan of the Gladius' hilt, but the blades look neat. This one's a fine piece, it seems from the video! How is the balancing? It looks like it has the weight more towars the point which is kinda unusual for thrustng swords like the Gladius' was. (I don't know that much about acient weapons though.)
@kaimagnus5760
@kaimagnus5760 5 жыл бұрын
The Gladius was an all purpose arming sword actually. It was just as effective at cutting and thrusting. Thrusting was just the more common attack for in formation shield users since standing close enough to someone for your shields to touch made cutting/slashing motions less practical.

the heavier weight towards the front gives it more kukri or machete like properties, which probably makes it more effective at slashing (or rather chopping) when you can't move your arm as much as in more modern European battle tactics.

I have a question about HEMA: How old do you need to be to start with HEMA? Because I am only 14 but really wants to practice (long)swordfighting, or how do I need to start with it?

It depends. If you are joining a club/school/studio then it is going to depend on their particular rules. Check the HEMA Club Finder (Google it) if you haven't already. At my club you would be able to take adult classes at 15 if I recall.

@@scottmacgregor3444 There is a school in my neighbourhood and the website says "Everyone is welcome, mostly students" so i don't know, but is the best way to start just go to a school or buy a sword and practice at home with it? (Btw sorry for my English spelling)

@@randomguy9515I would suggest at least checking out the club in your area. If you start by practicing at home by yourself there's not really any way to know if you're doing it right. Also, don't buy a sharp to practice or play around with. Please. If you want a training sword, buy a synthetic. If you join a club, they may provide training weapons.

@@randomguy9515 you're welcome. Fair warning, I'm not really an expert on the subject myself, being only about a half year on in HEMA. Have fun out there. I really wish I'd found out about HEMA when I was your age.
