A big thanks to Keith Rucker for making this repair happen. He did an amazing job of brazing the cast iron. The Oliver pattern makers vise is now installed and ready to build some furniture.

Keith was one of my suggestions and I am glad he was able to fix it. Brazing is his favored method of fixing cast iron.

Hi, nice job. If I were you, I would move the screwed-in part under the table as far forward as possible. This would allow the vise to be in a horizontal position when it is raised. It would be more convenient.

I noticed that as well. It should be 90 degrees of movement.

If there is one thing I've learned as my woodworking knowledge and skills have improved, it is that having metalworking friends is oh so valuable. We look at them and there skills with amazement, and usually, if they're not savvy with wood, they look at us with equal amazement. It's both hilarious and humbling.

I too am a fan of Kieth Rucker! I too have an Emmert Patternmakers vise and I find it extremely useful. A couple of points or thoughts: As you have the vise mounted into a cut out area on your bench, you have created a serious pinch point as you rotate the vise. Please use caution to keep from seriously damaging a finger. When I mounted my vise, I used bolts vertically as you did but I also used big wood screws horizontally. The horizontal screws added to the rigidity of the vise. When mounting such a vise, it is easier to mount just the rear jaw and then assemble the balance of the vise after the rear assembly is mounted and very ridged. I saw your original video of the breakage and I felt sick you for. Really nice to see that the damage has been fixed. Thank you for posting this!

Love it! I was finally able to get my hands on a used Woodcraft version, out of production, of this vise for my woodcarving. There was a Lee Valley vise like this that is no longer in production too. The only place that I know that still is making something like this is HNT Gordon in Australia. It has the X, Y, and Z axis of movement, but nowhere near the ability to clamp large objects. I would love to see quality versions of these vises made again!

@Austin V Papp Yeah it works great! I have no complaints. I have heard that earlier models like the Emmert or the Oliver in the vid have better fit and finish, maybe a little less slop in the parts, but I have had no complaints with mine at all. Also Woodcraft was selling theirs for only $200 or so, were as most of these antique ones start at $1000.
@AndyRawls

Agreed. I’ve seen the HNT Gordon and it’s a good vise but like you said not near as large as the Oliver.

Been Subscribed to Keith a long time. Although KZbin is weird and you loose track after a while. As soon as I clicked on the link (before I watched this full video) I recognized him again. I love his older videos and will be watching more of his videos now. Glad he could repair it for you that is a cool old vise. I have seen more and more about those. BTW I loved the note that the vice was on the floor when you went back to chopping.... Sometimes hard learned lessons are the best.

I was buying a Craftsman commercial lathe from this 93 year old man,whose dad bought the lathe in the late 50s while in the garage found a wood box with a never used rock island vise stamped 1943 got it home took it out just to marvel at it,had a buyer paying huge dollars for it ,and my elbow knocked it off my fab table and broke the ear off. It still hurts to this day,the collector still bought it,but for way less.

Watched Keith's video and liked it. One day, he may need something from a fine woodworker as yourself and then you can reciprocate the good will. Keith can do woodworking but I am not sure he does the fine detailed work that you do.

Hey Andy, I've been following for quite a few years and wanted to ask you a question. Have you ever thought about going back to your more cinematic, no dialogue, method of video making? Or do you enjoy making your videos as you have been with a bit more dialogue and more focus on the problem solving/process behind what you build, more? Thanks :D
