David Grainger, co-founder of Bradford, Ontario's Guild of Automotive Restorers, wasn't sure what to do with Bugatti chassis #57104 when he first got his hands on it-until he heard about the legendary Aerolithe.
The Jean Bugatti-designed "Electron Coupe" -- so named because it was bodied in a magnesium alloy called "Electron" -- mysteriously disappeared shortly after its 1935 debut at the Paris Salon.
That mystique made it the perfect candidate for an exacting five-year-long recreation performed using only period-correct materials and methods.
Thanks to the Guild of Automotive Restorers for access to this incredible machine.

I have spoken many times with David Grainger about Bugatti parts, projects, original Molsheim replacement gears etc. He is a great guy and true tasteful enthusiast and curator of the Bugatti family art. He got it right artistically and creatively while some other high profile Bugatti restoration/recreations failed spectacularly due to bad taste. Vive la marque!

lol... I don't think any machine can survive for 85 years... without maintenance... the magnesium body will just crumble to dust... after less than 20 years Just like with any other antique the price depends on the auction... sometimes you see antique collectors pay 100k for a chinese vase... sometimes 100 million xD it all depends on the collector and how much money he wants to spend... Personally I think that all old time classic cars should be put on display in museums for the public to enjoy whenever you want... not sold to collectors... You can go the museum EVERY day!! if you want to... no one is stopping you.... and you can sit there ALL day long.. and look at many cars... not just one! But for private collections... they are out few times a years... for couple of hours... and that's it... they are put away and hidden after that :/ Private collections suck

Yes, this is awesome as art and history, but it is silly to pretend the past is perfection, just because some antiques are still clever and beautiful manifestations of some of the greatly talented people of the past. This isn't what "cars should be"; rather it is a beautiful piece of history to be gawked at and enjoyed.

👨‍💻 Chris Ohrstrom 🕴 I am the owner. No the car is NOT a restoration. It is a Re-Body using an authentic period chassis #57104 with its the original running gear. The lost original Aerolithe was built on chassis #57103. The new body is recreated as exactly as possible based on computer analysis of period photos and using Elektron alloy as original. The goal was to "recreate" as closely as possible the original using as much period fabric as we could coupled with scholarly, scientific research. We are not trying to fool anyone. 🤐some people dont know the difference between restoration & a copy 🤐👉😜🤪🤣 that what he posted in big chin guy - LENO'S GARAGE

Gorgeous Automobile, the riveting is very original the slender design gives you a sort of calm feeling when you look at it, this is the exact recreation built, and with it's rarity you can find that's it's worth around $62,000,000+
@leneanderthalien
@leneanderthalien 10 жыл бұрын
The riveting was make because the magnesium was impossible to weld. Magnesium (density 1.74 and Elektron magnesium alloy 1.8) is much lighter as aluminium (density 2.7), and much more rigid for the same thikness...

I think that 17 of those were made .. they were aluminium not magnesium .. I think three survive and one was recently sold for 40 million dollars ..
@mattagnew206
@mattagnew206 9 жыл бұрын
Only three, possibly four Atlantics were made. Three survive today - Ralph Lauren's, the one in the Mullin collection (the one sold for between $30-40m) and a third, which is actually a rebuild after being totalled in a train accident back in the day. Several really nice replicas exist, including Leno's.
