Ive always assumed (specially in the manga) that most of the hand seals are done hidden or off screen/panel. For example, in the manga a lot of the time when they cast a jutsu you can see them using the last hand seal of the jutsu meaning they had already prepared the jutsu before the panel showed them casting it. That way Kishi wouldn't have to draw all the signs every time. Then there's also the fact that as a ninja you don't want your enemy to see the hand seals. Obviously that's my assumption. I dunno if Kishi meant it to be interpreted like that.

yeah it's always been my belief that ninja being able to drop hand seals as they get more skilled at performing their jutsu is anime-only canon, because fully animating the full seal sequence for every single jutsu ever used would be ridiculous and unreasonable on the artists. An anime can't really take the shortcut of implying the seals are always being done "off-panel" like a manga can. I assume this precisely because we saw the full sequence for the water dragon jutsu... because why the heck would two elite shinobi like Zabuzu and Kakashi both need to weave the full 44 seal sequence in a fight to the death? They should both be more than skilled enough to drop most of the seals if that was possible. Also, wouldn't the Sharingan's ability to copy hand seals be next to useless if any decently strong opponent can perform their favorite jutsu without needing to actually weave most of the seals?

@@5001Fergies except that would make no sense. Since Deidara has already fought itachi, then him not understanding the Sharingan’s capabilities makes him extremely foolish. I think that you have to change the continuity between part 1 and part 2. Since Large moves where balanced by using hand seals to use them while as in Part 2 the power ceiling raised so high so quickly that it was thrown away for plot reasons. Like why substitution is not used at all in part 2 even though it’s broken.

Fighting Itachi =/= knowing all of the Sharingan's capabilities (or all Itachi's abilities for that matter). Has nothing to do with Deidara being stupid, and instead everything to do with Itachi being smart enough to keep information secret. To the second point, hand seals start to disappear because Part 1 already laid out the foundation for reduced hand seals with Tobirama. He was able to perform Water Dragon with only 1-3 hand seals. It was then further cemented with Itachi's hand seal speed. Anybody who wasn't expecting them to be reduced once the main characters got stronger wasn't paying attention.

I think we realized hand seals were gone or going out of style by the first Itachi vs. Kakashi fight. We accepted Kakashi as god level shinobi and then realized, Itachi is Super God-mode, Kakashi stated his seals were too fast to see, and then it was bye-bye seals from that point.

Its somewhat unfortunate that they had to be reduced/removed since it really made room for Taijutsu to be more effective. A master Taijutsu user would be able to constantly interrupt an opponent and essentially lock them out of a great deal of their abilities and drag them into a contest of strength.

the initial 3-4 in the clip used in the video were to mould water chakra. Tobirama only used 1 seal for the jutsu itself. This works the same for any elemental release. You first mould the elemental chakra using its corresponding signs. You do the signs for the jutsu after that.

I am under the impression we don't generally see as many is because most ninjas should hide their seals so the enemy won't know what's coming. I feel like someone said that to someone (probably Jiraiya to Naruto). An example is when Itachi almost blew up Kakashi. Kakashi mentioned he could barely tell Itachi used seals and we, as audience, didn't see any hand seals. They probably use a lot more than we see, only showing the last few seals for us and their opponent. Edit: My favorite hand seal is Tora(Tiger).

This is just a hypothesis. The thing with Kakashi remembering all of the thousands of jutsus is that I believe the sharingan also allows its user to store anything it sees. It's like the memory is etched on to one's mind, like permanently. And this way, they can just remember the sequence of the hand seals, stored on the back of their mind or somewhere, and perform the art. So putting it simply, there is almost no chance of missing something or forgetting something by a sharingan user. Again, this is just my hypothesis

Agreed. It also helps because it kind of induces a near sensory overload of information which is also probably a lot easier to remember. When Sasuke unlocked his Third Tomoe, it was almost like Naruto was in slow motion. Using something like that for us in real life would be agonizing. So much information in so little time it would make seconds feel like minutes. This would also greatly help the imprinting of knowledge that it sees into ones memories.

The way I see it if its your first time creating a jutsu (lets say fireball) you need to preform all of the 7 hand signs in order (Horse > Serpent > Ram > Monkey > Boar > Horse > Tiger). Each hand sign basically weaves your chakra into different shapes, and those shapes create an element or whatever it is you're trying to conjure. Now some shapes are harder to weave than others (aka - It's harder to form your chakra into those patterns/shapes/etc) for example lets say "Tiger" is a very hard shape to form your chakra into, but is an easy hand-sign to do, and "Horse" is very easy. After you do it a few times you get a "feel" for how to shape the chakra into the "Horse" shape, and you no longer have to weave the sign because you just mentally do it. Basically the signs are just a guide on how to shape the chakra. This would be why you see some shinobi doing all of the hand signs, and then later only doing a few of the hand signs, and then none of the hand signs (or just 1 sign). So basically if "Horse" is easy, then the hand signs become (Serpent > Ram > Monkey > Boar > Tiger), and then if you get really good you might only have to do (Serpent > Tiger), or even just (Tiger) because you can do all the other shapes by feel.

Another way to look at it is that molding chakra is like mixing paint. If you think about it, hand seals really have NOTHING to do with the jutsu you're casting; it's the state of your Chakra that creates the effect you want. The hand seals are just a way to connect the effect you want in your mind with the physical energy of your body to create and mold your Chakra into the right state. If you imagine each hand seal as its own color, then weaving hand seals is just like mixing paint, continuing to add base colors until you create EXACTLY the color you're looking for, which would be the jutsu you want. To continue the simile, ninja who need less hand seals to pull of their jutsu are like artists who mix up big batches of a commonly-used color in their paintings; they're starting with a color closer to what they want, so they need less mixing to get to the end result. And eventually, they may just mix up whole batches of that specific color because they use it so much. In the same way, molding your Chakra into a specific state makes it easier and easier to get it back to that state, to the point you may not need to mold your Chakra at all; it's already permanently molded that way. Sasuke would be a good example of that; he was very skilled at both Fire and Lightning transformation, but he obviously favored the Chidori. So it's fair to assume that, since we barely ever see him use any hands to perform any Chidori variations, his Chakra was permanently molded into a Lightning Nature that simply needed to be directed into something. Send it to the hand: Chidori. Send it in a line out of the hand: Chidori Sharp Spear. Send it everywhere: Chidori Cloak. That would also explain why he didn't need hand seals for Kirin; since his inate chakra was Lightning Nature, controlling ambient lightning that he'd created with his Fire Style jutsu was effortless. However, because of that Sasuke still needed at least one hand sign to perform Fire Style jutsu, to change his chakra from Lightning to Fire.

I think the way hand signs work are similar to inputting variables in a formula where the formula describes how the chakra will act like its shape speed nature strength etc and its possible to learn how to input specific commands yourself which lets you skip some signs or if you practice enough skip all signs like chidori and rasengan which is why naruto needs a clone to help mold his chakra into a rasengan and another to add chakra because he can't input all variables himself and it would make sense why in the academy naruto made clones that were duds even if he did the right hand symbols because he was failing at inputting the final variables in. It also explains why only Kakashi with a sharingan can copy jutsus because he can see the chakra and the "inputs" the ninja are putting in after the hand signs otherwise anyone for example the raikage with his insane reaction speed would be able to see and copy jutsus just by doing the hand signs as for the one handed users or feet users it makes sense they unload some of the variables by doing partial signs and it would make sense why for extremely complex jutsus they have almost a ritualistic site with symbols or machines like during the war when they had people hooked up to machines as communicators like inos dad and using hand signs might also ensure less chakra goes to waste and is more focused then most things add up and make sense which is why terms like saying someone is good at chakra manipulation it would be nearly impossible to tell unless if that meant something tangible like is able to skip or use less signs than most people because if that's not how it works the term chakra manipulation is kind of meaningless and intangible

You could also add the possibility that a Ninja modifies a seal or even combines 2 or more into one compressing the sequence. Or maybe an alteration just fits that ninjas chakra better than the 'official' seal. These are all alterations that would require a lot of practice and research for the individual ( Orochimaru ) to perfect the ssseals for themssselves. Just added thoughts. Way back in the early days of Naruto I had heard of a hand seal called the "peacock" seal, but after looking it up it is Orochimaru's five elements seal - which I could have sworn was used in more jutsu than just that one. I also just figured that the "clone seal" was just a modified ram seal, given Naruto's basic seal looking like it's always the ram seal, and that with the first bunshin jutsu - the one that he failed his exam with -Naruto landed on ram instead of using any sort of clone seal. Also technically Naruto is the first character that we see using only one hand seal for jutsu as we see with Kage Bunshin, and most of his Henge usage - especially for the Oiroke no jutsu. Another thing that I took away from all the different hand seal information was an assumption that if a masterful ninja that was capable of shortening a 44 seal jutsu down to just 1 seal, but decided to go ahead with the correct incantation that the jutsu would be more "perfect" - that is to say stronger, and more durable - than if they cut corners.

There's a filler arc which revolves around a village that uses jutsus relying specifically on the peacock sign. (The jutsu name itself at least is 朝孔雀の術, jutsu of the peacock, iirc) Not sure how it differs from the bird sign though, but it's done by doing the heavy metal horns on both hands, thumbs spread out, and then interlacing your middle and ring fingers, other fingers spread out and touching their counterparts. Basically using hand seals in Naruto are kind of like wands in Harry Potter. Wizards for the most part need wands and have to move them specific ways to weave spells, but a sufficiently talented wizard can pull off wandless spells. I guess similar to magic words as well, as sometimes wizards need to say specific words to activate a spell but sometimes they just point the wand. It all seems to be a matter of how skilled and experienced you are.

I often draw my own OC characters that would exist in the anime I'm watching (like a pirate crew for One Piece) and I created many ninjas, one of them was a Sarutobi who summons apes, one special thing about him was that he could use 3 hand signs since apes have hands for feet (and he would use a trasformation jutsu to access that or by using ape sage mode after years of training)

3:13 I always understood it as the opposite. You need to shape your chakre (your mental and physical energy) to make Jutsu and handseals are just an aid to do so. Because there are a characters that can use one handed seals, and jutsus that require none. And it makes sense when you consider their origins in buddism. There are mental aids to recite mantras

In some sense, you could say that this was why Shurikens and Kunais were useless in the series. If you had to make 44 handseals for a powerful jutsu, it would mean that it could be interfered with by your opponent. You can kill them with Shuriken and Kunais, but since the handsigns reduce so much, that window is gone and now these weapons are useless

One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention is Jiraiyas foot seals. It seems like something you would have seen other powerful ninja learn. Jiraiya's use case for it was so that he could prepare for sage mode. You would think that ninjas who may have their hands busy using weapons or that lost a limb in battle like Naruto, Sasuke, A, or even Minato (not that he lost a limb before he died) would have been able to channel chakra with foot seals. It was already a land of waves arc training task to channel chakra through feet, so it's not like it's not well established that it should be within the realm of possibility.

Originally handseals were supposed to be a reason for ninja to have to use taijutsu and not just spam fireballs. As time wore on and the most popular parts of Naruto were the cool flashy effects to keep it on par with other anime of the time this limitation was lessoned and forgotten. Kind of stealing away a lot of what Kakashi was set up to be. Imo the combat and not the jutsu will always be my favorite parts of the fights. Rock Lee being one of my favorites for that reason, but darn if Naruto doesnt become proficient at throwing them hands later on as well.

I'm no naruto lore expert, but I feel like one possible in-universe justification for hand seals, the changing combination and their eventual disappearance is that hand seals are meant to be ways to visualise how you shape your chakra. Thats why more skilled users can use less seals: because they have better visualisation of the chakra form so they just need a few guides. Thats why theres a standardised list: because they learn ninjutsu from the ninja academy, so they're told what the signs represent and what theyre associated with. But as time progresses and people get a better chakra sense, they stopped needing the guides at all. Its also why hand seals arent needed in Boruto, because the pedagogy has improved and students are probably taught to understand the feel of chakra instead of relying on the seals. It also explains why there are random, new seals, and variances in the hand seals used for the same jutsu: because its based on the personal understanding of the jutsu. If a dragon helps you visualise better than a boar, then you use it as a guide. If no existing hand sign gives you a better visualisation, you create one. I have a very specific theory about the nature of the clapping hand sign: the clapping signifies coming together. Whether its 2 sources of chakra, 2 different types (normal and nature, for example). Which is why its used when youre summonning a massive amount of chakra: because the pool exceeds your own so you draw in from an external source. Same for confrontation: confrontation is not just the confrontation, but the initiation of the confrontation. Thats why deidara uses it to initiate his explosions. But maybe this is just me trying to come up with a coherent justification for a magic system of a series i didnt even enjoy all that much.

And regarding seals in general, its shape is related to the "contact surface". It is the equivalent of an alphabet but done with your fingers and skin as surface. If you look at the shape you make with those signs, they have different contact positions and surfaces between the 2 hands, which is used to regulate the chakra. As people are made of yin and yang, the left and right hands act as terminals of a battery that join together, and the various shapes you make with your fingers are like adding a resistor, capacitor, transistor to the circuit, one by one to make the "word" that equal to that technique. When they join hands, they are using the maximum surface between the 2 hands using their palm; that means that your entire essence is molded on the maximum surface possible, hence that is why they do it when they need to use a lot of chakra. You can technically do it with one hand but you need to be very skilled, and you can see that only twice in the entirety of the manga I believe.

I have a question, If hand signs are usefull for molding chakra, wouldn't had it better if Minato, Jiraja and Naruto use hand signs to ease the learning of the rasengan and aplying a nature chakra to it, I mean by this video I understand that they pretty much brute force the developing of the rasengan by doing the hard way instead of the easier way of adding hand signs.

It kinda made sense for me that hand seals were being used less and less as the characters got stronger because of the inspiration for them. A lot of people look at hand seals like words in a spell which really how it is. Hand seals were a real thing for real life ninja and they were used as breathing techniques to help ninjas focus and accomplish different things. I always thought of hand seals in Naruto doing just this, helping ninjas focus so they could channel their chakra and pull of their techniques, the better they are the less they have to focus and more innate it becomes to them!

In the video, the clip you showed if Tobirama using the Water Dragon Jutsu, he used around 4 hand signs to pull it off, not just 1, but yes he did cut down the number required to pull it off.
