The best defense is not getting hit. True that. Also, the best fight is no fight, the best fight is the fight you never have. But, if you are attacked, then you attack the attacker.
@deaddocreallydeaddoc5244Ай бұрын
As a competitive fencer who trained for decades, taught for decades, (competed on the national circuit), and was involved in the early development of what became "historical fencing," etc., I have to tell you that your first section with the swords was terrible. In staying in to get a wrist cut, you probably got yourself killed or nearly so if the other guy had any training. NEVER attack into an attack, ONLY DEFEND. Retreating is good, but a solid parry system that opens up a clear attack line is better. Your footwork is not that good, either. When you are in a fight, get low, never get into a position where your feet are gathered. Stay in a crouch where you are balancing your weight between your legs. Train in a good lunge and know how to use it. In the situation you presented, depending on my read of the skill level of the attacking party, I might parry and look for an opening, but the safest thing to do is to get out of immediate range (out of his immediate striking reach) and then create an immediate counter-attack with an envelopment of his sword and strike OR if its a knife, enveloping the arm. The opportunity is created by drawing out an overreaction and having the skill and training to take advantage of the opening you have created. An envelopment, done properly gets control of the sword (or arm) while you can strike because of your power advantage. It doesn't matter that much about size. I'm 5'6" and bean many tall guys because I was more skilled and experienced. Serious fencers spend hundreds and hundreds of hours on footwork alone. In serious schools, the first six months are spent on footwork alone. You can teach or learn it from a video online, or a book. It has to be done by you, under the supervision of someone who knows how it is done properly. Mastering fencing is very valuable because the training transfers to one's hands easily. Few people know that Bruce Lee spent a couple years in Milan, Italy learning at the Mangerotti School of Fencing. He adapted the modern parry system to develop the handwork he made famous. I've had a couple incidents where a party suddenly jabbed at me. My hand reacted without my even thinking about it. I deflected the fist and had my hand on the party before they knew what was happening. I had the time to decide if I wanted to club him down or break his nose. My wise choice was to set my hand on his shoulder and let him know I was in control - both times, and they were bigger guys. The last time this happened I was 68 years old. I spent many, many hours, thousands, in my youth, training for hours on end, in the salle fencing from three to five days a week - for years. And don't try to teach or fight in Birkenstocks.

That being said, if you don't understand Muto dori,.... you don't understand the sword,... before the 1800s there were millions of people worldwide that were skilled in the use of swords and other martial weapon now their less than 1000 worldwide and very likely far less than that,... for example Japan sent 200,000 Samurai in China through Korea at least 3 times,.... If any sword practitioner can't illustrate at full on speed sparing with a blade then they aren't included in this number!

First thing would be maybe to walk around with some sand/ stones in your trousers, that you could throw in the eyes in case of an attack. It’s easier to prepare with that than carrying a sword to parry. 😅 Then grab anything around you to get between you and the attacker if possible. If you let someone with a sword get this near in an area where nothing blocks your sight…well that was the first mistake. 😅
@non988628 күн бұрын
man i don't say you are totally wrong but you are biased. going down? lunge? sry but legs are very important and vulnerable. maybe not in fencing but in street fight they definitely do. also for me his footwork was quite good. his weight was pretty much between his leg mostly. he kept his posture higher and same with his center of gravity. which allows you to use gravity for your movements...

Could you speak to the fact that in almost any street fight that I have seen where the attacker has a knife, stick or iron, they will almost never fully commit to the strike, it always seems to start with a series of halfhearted and threatening feints, while very much checking out if nothing too professional or mental looking is ensuing from their opponent, which I never really see back in any hypothetical "reenactment", as it were. Maybe also show what evil will befall those who do " run away" when chased by a psycho with a knife or a tire iron.

the problem with these "defense" videos is that they ALWAYS assume facts unrealized. What if the attacker is left handed, what if the attacker is right handed but YOU are left handed. The angle of attack is rarely what you "train", not to mention, the adrenaline dump you have to manage at the same time. Now im not saying these vids arent useful to a point, BUT, the ultimate lesson here is that if you want to be as prepared as possible, you must TRAIN regularly. Anything less and you will find yourself flailing around like anyone else. The best thing my father ever taught me was to ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS and ALWAYS MAINTAIN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. These two concepts will keep you from finding yourself in a self defense position like the one demonstrated in this vid.

Your footwork will only work if your opponent comes at you in slow motion. The truth, you're not going to move back fast enough to get out of the way of a strike that comes at you faster than you can move back. Attackers don't swing in slow motion. The best option is to time the strike and close, and at the same time use midrange de cuerdas blocking to deflect the strike away from you and then counterattack. It takes practice. Try it with sticks first. There is no reality in slow motion striking, but it is some place to start in your training and continue to speed that strike up until there is speed and power. By the way, your attacker isn't even trying to touch or hit you with his stick. To make this work, you have to gage your strikes so you know he is going to hit you if you don't move or defend with either a hand deflection or stick deflection. Just a few tips to help improve what you're doing.

I can tell you first hand with the right amount of training, it doesn't matter how big the guy is. I was paired with a rugby player, a good couple of feet bigger than me and we were working on knife disarm drills. For this particular drill, we were supposed to come against the forearm, abeniko with the other arm, then bring their arm to our hip. Problem was, as you've mentioned, he was bigger, more muscular, etc. So, he tried to be funny and pretty much pulled me in. Then, I remembered one phrase my instructor told me, "If you're feeling resistance, give them what they want." So, rather than pulling to my hip, I pushed while controlling his wrist, transitioned to a forearm lock instead, and essentially turned the knife on himself. If either of us moves, he cuts himself. Now, I'm not saying that you should absolutely pick a fight with a guy who is bigger and stronger than you. I'm just saying that if you are put in a position where you have to defend yourself, don't count yourself out. It just takes some training. That's why stress testing your technique is essential.
