The One Thing People NEVER Understand About Fat Cyclists.
Most people seem to think that the only reason us fat cyclists ride is to loose weight. I can tell you now, this is not always true.

I'm in my late sixties and, luckily, I have never been overweight. I have, however, suffered from anxiety and depression for most of my adult life. The bike has been my prescription! I've taken a range of medication over the years but none comes close to what the bike does for me. It,as you say, makes me happy. Thanks for the videos.

You remind me of a chap of a similar age that was riding in a charity bike ride with me of a similar age to you that I rode in many years ago and I said the same thing to him as I said to you that at the same age I hope I'll be able to do the same thing myself as it's a thing I really enjoy.

Weight loss requires a caloric deficit, eat less calories, and combine with riding and resistance training. This past year i lost 60lbs, and it required eating less and moving more. The prior 2 years i rode the same distance, but didnt change diet, only lost 10lbs and gained it right back.

Im 62 as well. To rattle around Englands bumpy rural roads is a tonic for me, for all the reasons you pointed out. My bike currently shod wirh 40mm tyres inflated to 60 psi. I dont concern myself about potholes. A lot of my mates are on Zwift and they seem to enjoy it which is nice, ive tried but its not my bag. Occasionally i cycle on very windy days, very wet days and even down a very muddy bridleway just to see if i can. At 62 i laugh at the whole situation and am thankful i can do it. I genuinely spare a thought for all those who for whatever reason are unable to endulge in our pastime. Leonard, im sure you deliver joy and make people happy. Great job boi!

So glad you say these things! I’m a female, overweight, in my 60s. I love being out on my bike - a love I’ve had since the mid 1960s! I’m not out to prove anything, I have a 3-speed Brompton and can often be found cycling and walking beside my little bike along the country lanes around where I live. I’ve done several tours on the little Brompton, including LeJog, walking any hills I couldn’t ride - who cares? It’s all fresh air and exercise and it keeps my head free of stress and worry. I’m never as happy as I am when I’m pottering along the lanes on my little bike. However you do your cycling, just ride ❤️

Another "heart to heart" video, Leonard. I couldn't have said it better & couldn't agree with you more. I am 59, overweight, and have been cycling for about 15 years. I do it for no other reason than the pure enjoyment of it. Driving through an area and riding a bike through the same area are two very different experiences. There's something much more intimate in the latter. I'd have to say that cycling also does indeed boost my mental/emotional well-being, not to mention feeds my sense of adventure. After all, there are so many more places one can explore on a bicycle than in a car. Thanks for expressing it so well. It's always a joy to know that someone else "gets it/us!"

Hi, my fellow overweight cyclists in their fifties :) As someone with permanent home office I started cycling during Covid pandemic about three years ago, and definitelly love it. As you mentioned Leonard, if I don't get out to cycle, I may stay at home for days and days and get mad. I didn't lose much weight, however 4400 km last year made a huge difference in fitness and it was visible even on EKG by cardiologist. I wish you all many and many happy miles or kilometers. whatever you like :)

Nothing justifies a good bevvy like a bike ride. It's great to do some sort of exercise to get fit, and cycling is the only one that ticks all these boxes: - you can do it on your own or with other people - you can do it on the way to work or to the shops - you can be competitive or not - you can start at home and stop at the pub on the way back home - you can learn more about the places near you, and be like a tourist in your own county. I get loads more smiles when I'm riding my bike than either walking or driving, and I see much more good driving when I'm on my bike than in my car.

Hi Leonard, I stumbled across your KZbin channel recently. Earlier this year I had a neurological issue (probably caused by stress) and consequently lost my driving licence (Medically) as such I was forced to find alternative transport to work and decided on a bike. To start with it was absolutely exhausting and I didn't think I could carry on - however as time went on I got fitter and stronger and then got the cycling bug (bigtime) - but I do carry a bit of weight and always have done and have always been comfortable with it (never caused me any health issues). Anyway long story short I now ride a GravelBike (only on road) and am obsessed (in a healthy way) with watching cycling videos and ALL of your have really inspired me to just be me and not try to be the stereotypical lycra clad Adonis that I thought you had to be - There needs to be more positive people like you in this world! Btw….I’m 62 and still considerably overweight, although I’ve lost over 7 stone. Cycling has helped me lose weight, but that is not the reason I ride. I do it because of how good it makes me feel! Cycling is something I enjoy more and more, the older I get. The mental benefits are amazing! You have been a great help and inspiration to me. If not for your encouragement, I would never have dared wearing Lycra! Lol! Now I won’t wear anything else. I remember before I started cycling, I’d see these guys in the skin tight bike outfits, and say that I’d never do that! Never say never, because I am now one of those guys! As an OMIF myself, I had my vitamin levels checked post long covid and found I was deficient in Vitamin D and B12. I was also advised to consider a magnesium supplement. Several months on and I feel 10 years younger and a stone lighter without any real effort. I put this down to the improved vitamin and magnesium levels allowing my body just to function normally again. Most importantly is that I can enjoy cycling again, and that to me is priceless...

Yep. You’re absolutely right about cycling for enjoyment and our own mental health. Sure I like getting fitter or like working up an appetite (esp if there’s fresh pie) or sometimes challenging myself, but even if cycling had no impact on my physical health, I’d do it just because it’s enjoyable. I work from home too and it’s the enjoyment of cycling that gets me out. Our big lake is now frozen and Tuesday was sunny, calm, and the snow/ice crust was firm. The lake is about 870 square km, 65 km long, and can be wide enough you can’t see the far shore. I cycled on it for three hours, visited a small town, looped around some treed rocky islands (think Group of Seven style paintings). I loved the freedom of being able to ride anywhere and still not see people. Theoretically I could maybe ride down a major river and end up in Georgian Bay on the Great Lakes (that’s over a 100 km one way, and there are rapids so practically I probably couldn’t make it the entire way). But just the idea of winding my way up some river in the middle of mostly unpopulated country is exciting enough to drag me off the couch and/or away from the computer. It’s all about the enjoyment, not about calories burned or fitness goals attained. And cycling on the lake under a full moon so far out you can’t hear any city noises…well, it’s an experience I try for every bright moon, even if I can only ski out rather than bike. I could also bike in another lake and series of rivers/small lakes and end up in our nation’s capital 300-400 km later (great canoe route in summer). Not that I will but the idea that I could go on that adventure gives me goosebumps (and no cars to worry about). Tomorrow will be different enjoyment. The local cycle shop owner said they’ll have the riding trails along the ski hill and the escarpment groomed by Saturday. I’ve never cycled them, not even in summer (just hiked). I’m excited to try it (maybe even a bit of socializing with the cycle shop folks if I see them). What makes these things more precious is that I’m now early 60s and I know these type of rides will increasingly run up against the frailties of aging. But I’ll keep going out till I can’t, and then I’ll do different types of rides till I can’t, and then adapt again to easier rides still, because cycling is so enjoyable I feel slightly sorry for people who don’t cycle. They’re missing out on so much.

Last year I cycled and I lost 10 kilograms. To a point, how can I stop losing this weight, I don't want to be underweight. My rides varied from 20-80kms, so nothing to crazy if I'm honest. Many people say doing some exercise, helps you feeling stronger and better. Also my doctor said I should exercise more. With a strong head wind, trying to overcome, and feeling good I achieved something tangeble. We humans were not designed to sit behind the computer for 16 hours a day. I also love exploring and seeing the world, knowing all the local streets for like 40 kilometers around me makes me feel good. You could say, why don't you use google maps, and I do, but it's still not the same. Discovering old/ancient buildings, with their history, amazing

I'm 6'1" and weigh 10st 3lbs so not overweight but I am prone to health anxiety but a couple of hours/20 miles on the bike makes me think that if I can do that there can't be much wrong with me. As a sole carer I am not able to get out more once a week depending on the weather, sometimes it is less than that in the winter but whenever time and the weather allows I do go out. Keep it up My goal this year is to make three hundred fifteen-mile rides which will require some double rides in the summer. It's going to be a great year.

Good going! Ride for the love and enjoyment and peace of mind. I’m soon to be 71 and for the past dozen years I have ridden my age in mileage around my birthday. My goal is to ride my age/mileage and shoot my age in score golf. Last year I rode 70 miles and shit 73 on same day. I’m getting there. Keep up the good work. I’m fortunate…6’ tall and 165 pounds so weight has never been a n issue. Guess I’m lucky

@@markfeldman6509 Mark, I'm very similar to you as far as age and weight go ( 72 years and 160 or so lbs. and 6' ) Like you, each year I try to do the appropriate miles to match my age , on my birthday . Don't know where you live, but here in Canada, Toronto to be specific, having one's birthday in November can be a problem due to bad weather. On the good side, though, being in Canada where miles have been replaced by kilometers, I reserve the right to do 73 kilometers instead of miles this year, as an escape plan. PS : you might want to change you're posted data for last year. I mean , I can see doing the 70 miles, but the other stats must be some kind of a record. I assume a typo there. Good luck to you

Around 30 mikes per day every day of the year. Recovery day every ten days or so and many longer rides following my day off. One century ride per month. Cold and windy down here in Florida today. You make a good strong case for cycling here, and as a sometimes bike commuter and pleasure rider over the years, your words resonate. Everyone's weight is strictly their own business. But for anyone who wants to get themselves into the "average" BMI range (which is no easy feat in one's 50s), I have learned that cardio activity alone won't get you there, just as you alluded to. However, something I have also learned is that a hormone-aware diet and weight training regimen WILL get you there. What a difference it makes to your physical and mental health. An unexpected bonus? It's tremendous for your cardio capacity, too!

I was just settling down for a wet afternoon of catching up with KZbin videos. Yours was the first I watched and prompted me to get off my fat 50-something arse and go for a cheeky 50k-er. I got drenched, freezing cold, knackered, had several close passes and my bike is now making a lot of very ominous noises. So I guess this is to say thank you for motivating me, I loved every second of it 😅. No such thing (usually) as a bad ride!

I truly enjoying your content. So much truth and wisdom about it all. Thank you for reminding us of some of the powers of cycling at times where it is easy to lose track of all it's benefits. We live in a world of mass distraction, making it easy to lose perspective on why we do the things we do and love, like cycling and why it is oftentimes the antidote to our ailments, imaginary or real. Thank you!

Nothing excites me more than arriving at a group ride with my club seeing everybody prepping for the ride. Pre-ride chats going on, people all smiles ready to go. Since November, I have been training hard for the upcoming spring-summer season. This year I have several fun rides to participate in, so being fit is a must. I’ve been out very little on my bike these last few months, the less you go out, the less inclination you have to go out. I’ve started doing the gym every other day early morning and find it consistent and not dependant on the weather, but I do miss cycling.. It’s always seems to be wet, raining, windy, cold, dark etc.. especially on a weekend. Not the most inviting time of the year, then when you find a massive drop in performance, it’s pretty soul destroying. Perhaps the ‘one mile every day’ method might be a way around this, or an electric bike to bridge the drop in performance until you feel fit enough for the regular bike..? Regarding colds/flu, I’ve never had either since I started taking an ice cold shower every morning.. Can’t recommend it enough!

I carry a lot of lean weight because im a bodybuilder but happen to love cycling also. Not just for cardio fitness but every ride is an adventure. Even though ive got a strong cardio system im slow on a bike so can identify with this. There is this big tendency with many cyclists to treat every ride like its a bloody race and not really enjoy being in the moment and the journey itself.

I'm 47 and totally agree. I can't wait to get back out on my bike again having had COVID recently. For me it's always on my own because most of the bike clubs expect me to either be riding at a specific AVG speed or have a road bike, neither of which I have as I have a gravel bike and so I do it on my own. With that being said I do plan to do a few more rides with a friend of mine who lives not far from me including a challenging route climbing dree hill up the side of one of the Mourne Mountains. For me it's about fun, fitness and helping me to lose weight tho'I am on a permanent diet/number of calories as I was close to becoming type 2 diabetic because unfortunately it's something which runs in my family. Your videos are music to my ears and eyes as they show someone of similar build to me getting it there and not afraid to do so. Fair play to you. My next thing I'm planning to get potentially is a set of the shokz bone conduction headphones so I can have my music on the move as I wouldn't ride with anything in my ears so that I can hear around me on the bike but would like to have some means of being able to listen to some vibes when I'm out as I usually am primarily on my own tho' that isn't as I said through choice. Having said that I do like to get out when I can usually at the weekend as I find it helps me clear the head so from a mental health perspective it's also ace.

@@jollygoodvelo true tho'I can't find one locally that'll even give me a chance because I'm not on a road bike and can't stick at their pace. Great video and you have really got the essence of why a lot of people ride a bike. Not just fat or overweight people all sorts of people. Riding a bike is simply fun and it gets you out and about in the fresh air and countryside in a way that only rambling or hiking does. The media loves to make cyclists a target of abuse because of the enrage and engage marketing that makes them money but cyclists aren't any different than motorists or pedestrians they are just people moving about actually. I keep riding into my 60's now and I do it because I like it. No I am not fool enough to think I am going out to beat anyone or prove how fit I am I realise that is all past me now. I admit overtaking cars stuck in traffic is fun though makes me happy to see those sad miserable fat in a can types complaining about cyclists not giving them 1.5 m passing space. Never too late too fat too unfit to cycle just enjoy dont set big expectations for yourself just do it and if you like it keep it up
