"Write what you know" is THE most misunderstood piece of advice you will get as a storyteller. I break down what it really means by taking a look at the Netflix Limited Series Baby Reindeer and talk about how show creator Richard Gadd uses real life experiences to tell a fictional story.
I'm a film maker and screenwriting professor and in this series I analyze one thing you can learn from a TV show or a feature that can make you a better storyteller.
I also have a podcast I record with my brother, Dr. Joshua Jones, where we discuss mental health in cinema. We covered Baby Reindeer last week, here is the link or you can listen anywhere you get your podcasts.

Finally. Clarity and conciseness. You put so clearly the muddle that was my mind on this subject. Thank you.

Loved the video and writing advice! An experience that truly changed me is playing a team sport such as volleyball. It’s really overwhelming when you start to practice something you like, and then feel like everyone around you constantly gets better but you feel like you can’t keep up. Added to that, we have a pretty harsh coach, who permits the scene for harshness in general. So I’ve had a lot of experiencies with teammates where they have been rude and dismissive because I/ someone else makes a mistake(s). But it repeated, in several matches, with several teammates and I analyzed my thoughts and how it was a pattern. I was feeling stuck in my journey/ not self compassionate because others weren’t compassionate, and my teammates weren’t compassionate because they weren’t self-compassionate either (probably because some other teammate did the same they’re now doing, AND IT LOOPS. So when I realized that, I came to terms with my journey and started to notice that I actually was progressing, and when I focused on my progress I was able to enjoy my sport SO much more, and also appreciate all of my new abilities. It’s kinda hard not to compare one self with others in sports, but I’m glad that now I do it without a self-destructive aim. +and also these situations inspired me to always make my teammates feel appreciated and supported. I offer a helping hand instead of rolling my eyes, now I tell them that their efforts are valued. These experiences truly lead you to act as a catalyst for change.

This is SO good! I love the lesson of only comparing yourself to yourself. There's also something in here that we talk about in the Whiplash episode where the teacher affects the students in how they lead. Toxic teachers or coaches will create toxic captains or team leaders. Inspiring teachers or coaches will create inspiring captains, etc. Thank you SO much for sharing. This is exactly the type of story I'm talking about!

Oh you're a storyteller. We all tell stories. If you've ever captivated someone at a party then you are DEFINITELY a storyteller.
