there is a famous 'Balik Kampung' song.... sung by the legendary Malaysian singer - Sudirman (can search on KZbin)... the lyric translation goes like this: The journey is long but I don’t feel it Because my heart is jumping Longing to see my family & relatives Who seem to be in front of my very eyes already In the distance, see the green mountains, fields and forest The sky so high seems to be bluer than ever Even the blowing of the wind sounds like music to my ears As though, everything is as happy as me Back to my hometown My heart is happy/elated Ho ho... Back to my hometown My heart is happy/elated I can imagine the faces that I love Each one of them in my heart The longing in my heart will surely be cured They will welcome my return

“Balik kampung” is a very sentimental concept in Asian cultures. Something everyone looks forward to whenever they have the opportunity. Esp. when you still have your parents at home. And they are also always expecting yr return to kampung.

The biggest travel holiday similar to this in the U.S. is Thanksgiving. It's held in November and is the biggest travel holiday each year. It's also the kick-off of the year end holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year) for the U.S. Thanksgiving is always on the 4th Thursday in November and is followed by "Black Friday", which is the start of the Christmas shopping season.

I can relate to the long flight. I'm sorry to note that the windows were shuttered. That must hv bn awful. In 2001 I went NYC on a SQ flight (Airbus) from KL to NYC with one stop at Amersterdam - it was about 2-3 hr stop ( cant exactly remember) for SQ to clean-up and re-fuel. I did get off the plane for shortwhile to walk my legs. The flight frm KL to Amersterdam was 13 hrs and including stop over and resuming flight to NYC ( I remember it was La Guardia) was another 14 hours making it 27 hours in all. It was not a pleasant trip. I arrived at night at NYC and dont remember windows being shuttered. But I caught a nasty cold leading to an asthma attck on arrival. That was bad memory. Here's wishing u an enjoyeable trip to our Msia.
@InternationalBigshot Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the note, and for watching the video. The KL to USA route with a stop in Amsterdam is my favorite way to go back to the U.S. I don't fly it much anymore because the airline I used to go on (Delta) doesn't have an easy connection to my home town anymore, so I've become an airline agnostic. I'll take whatever is convenient and economical. On my way back from this trip in December I'm going from Singapore to San Fransisco and then various connections from there. It's a combination of Singapore and United Airlines. I hate arriving anywhere at night, so I feel bad for you getting to NYC in the dark.

I think it's pretty easy to book a room for the wrong night when you fly around the world and spend a night in transit along the way and have to deal with time zones and date changes. I've made that mistake even when staying in the same hotel and extending my stay by a couple more nights. I'm not even dealing with a tiring 19-hour flight and changing time zones, and I still get it wrong. No need to beat yourself up about that. 😀

The flight that brought you non-stop from EWR to Singapore is operated using a specially designed Airbus A350-900 version called the ULR (Ultra Long Range). So far, only Singapore Airlines utilise this particular version of A350.
@InternationalBigshot Жыл бұрын
I saw a TV show about this flight when it first started and they said that at the time there were only 9 or those aircraft built and Singapore Airlines owned 8 of them. I forget when that was though. I checked before my recent flight and there are now hundreds of these types of planes but I don't think they are all configured for the longest of long flights.
@guyfromkk Жыл бұрын
@@InternationalBigshot Perhaps that was way back in 2004. Singapore Airlines used to operate Airbus A340-500 for this route. But, it was later discontinued, partly because the aircraft was a fuel guzzler (using four engines). Now reinstated with Airbus A350-900ULR. There are hundreds of A350s now in the skies, but only 7 of them are -ULR all operated by Singapore Airlines.

At first I though that there was a KL/NY direct flight on Malaysian Airlines but after reading some of the comments here I'm not so sure. I think you're right the direct flight went from KL to LA or San Fransisco, but not New York. MAS doesn't do it anymore though.
