In reality you need to have insurance before you go to FCMSA to apply for authority. That should be the 1st step and yes you need a truck to get insurance. Also when doing the UCR filing , DO NOT PAY some one to do this or a year fee. That's a rip off. Just do it and if you do not keep up your UCR filing, they will back bill you. You have to keep it updated yearly.

You need a USDOT number to get insurance on the authority. So you have to apply for the authority. You may be able to get a insurance quote but you won’t be able to get insurance without a DOT number

Lastly, you don’t even need to have a truck to apply for authority, which goes back to the first question. What are you insuring?

I'm quoting the website fwiw you can find it on their website under fmcsa authority requirements; [QUOTE] "In addition to filing an application for operating authority, all applicants for motor carrier, freight forwarder, and broker authorities must have specific insurance and legal process agent documents on file before the FMCSA will issue the authorities" [/QUOTE] They also go into detail about the other legal documents and the insurance types, etc...... So what's might be confusing to some how does a carrier who owns no trucks get an authority? They have too had apply & acquired insurance some where down the line and before they are issued an authority.

@@kfelix2934 I under that, but you have 21 days from the day you apply for authority to get insurance. What they are saying is, your authority cannot be active until you have insurance on file. Another thing, you actually will not know your financial responsibility until you file. Most truck requires 750k but 1million is adviced. But like in my case, the financial responsibility is actually 1million, so if I had gotten 750k then I will have to call my insurance back, which is almost same as just getting a new insurance that is useful for activating authority.

You actually have 90 days after you apply for authority, you have a 21 day protest, meaning if you have insurance by those 21 days it will go active after 21 days if no insurance you have 90 days before they trash your application. And you can get 750 k liability and 100k cargo is the minimum of insurance you need to get authority active . And don’t forget your mcp permit if you’re in Cali.

I share with people what services I use. If you have a problem with factoring then that’s not my concern. Cash flow is a big deal. Starting out you need cash flow. If people are concerned with what little money factoring deducted then think again. I’m not concerned about factoring percentages which I will write off as a tax deduction anyway.
