If you're new to the channel I use the pinned comment to get any extra info across I might need to, as well as links to any upgrades to the build I might feature in a future video. Making the things I show in the video: The builds are all pretty straightforward to make, even if you just use 3mm magnets. Put it this way, all my examples in the video were made with blocks with all 3mm magnets, before I stuck 6mm ones in the bottom. Pausing the video will give you a good idea of how each one is built, so I thought I'd use this space to offer some tips on how to best build things so they're stable! When you're making things with these blocks, it's important to bear physics in mind. If you have bits sticking out, having a sloped section made of bricks and stairs supporting it will let you stretch that bit out further, and will also look more realistic more often than not. If you use 6mm magnets, either on the south poles or on a few blocks, you'll be able to stretch out these bridges further. Same thing goes for pillars and columns at the bottom, making some 'feet' from blocks and stairs on each side of the pillar can steady the piece dramatically. Generally speaking I found I only needed to add features like this where it might be expected for a structure to have supports anyway. Stone wall magnet hiding: So, in the cottage video I showed how to magnetise floor and wall tiles to connect WAY more easily, and I mentioned I would show how to hide the magnets away for when you want to use them stacked up. Essentially the method I used was the same as I show on these blocks, I used a hot glue gun nozzle to heat up the magnet and push it a little further in and get some space to fit the miliput. Again though, doing that is totally optional. Paint the magnets with tan-grey mixed with mod podge and they'll camouflage pretty well anyway.
@maciejmazur26223 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the use of spherical magnets? They are mostly used in 3d printed tiles but have a thing that makes them worth while : you dont have to worry about the magnet facing. The way its working is each magnet has a small enclosure in which it can rotate freely to mach another magnet. Its easy to do in 3d printed aterial - but its quite heavy so you wouldnt be able to make as amazing stairs as the ones in your video - but it gave me an idea - buy a piece of thin plastic tube, cut it to fit the spherical magnet and sealing one end with a piece of foil - you can just put it into hole in the middle of each cubes face - i need to test it out as it has potential!
@RPArchiveOfficial3 жыл бұрын
It has potential, the main problem is the distance between magnets is increased so the strength is decreased massively, so you need bigger and more expensive magnets...
@maciejmazur26223 жыл бұрын
@@RPArchiveOfficial i dont think foil + milliput would be much worse than what you did in the video, and it depends how much and from where you buy - i got mine off china and they were less than 10c per piece i think (5 mm spherical )
@RPArchiveOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Actually for this build you might be right. The foil definitely has potential. When I get the chance I'll look into it, might be difficult to get a hold of things soon, we're headed back into a harsher lockdown tomorrow.... And that's on top of brexit disruption etc :/

I have a magnet question. In this video and others you talk about using 6mm magnets because they are stronger than 3mm. I assume the downside is their larger diameter. Since magnetic flux increases increases with larger and mor magnets, why not just use two 3mm magnets stacked? Upper floor tiles are typically not strong enough with the normal 3mm magnets to support large minis and details and movement, but in theory couldn’t you just increase the depth of the hole and 2x, 3x, or 4x the floor magnets to increase the strength? As long as they are all facing the same way their magnetic strength should be additive. Sure it increases the magnet cost, but it also stays in the smaller hole.
@RPArchiveOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Double stacked 3mm magnets are nowhere near as strong as a 6x2, because it's also about surface area connection, and also from what I've seen and done, stacking magnets doesn't increase the strength beyond the depth of the width (so a 3x2 stack doesn't have the strength of a 3x4, it's more like a 3x3, even less though, probably due to the two fields being less effective than one. But I'm not sure on the science of that, just the mechanics and effects I've seen...
@seankrake47762 жыл бұрын
@@RPArchiveOfficial that’s sad to hear. The way the face area of a magnet works is if the area is smaller the lines of force are more dense, and the larger the face, the less dense the lines. Short fat magnets are usually the strongest. I’m curious if a piece of tin could extend the pole faces similar to how they do it in generators.

I wonder if there's a solution to getting minis to stand on the stairs. I made some, and bigger minis are fine, but regular hero sized minis tend to topple over. Thinking of either gluing a metal washer to the base for extra weight or something with magnets.

Check out my basing video. A removable small magnet in the base should give stability without pulling the stairs apart :)

Firstly, thanks for this it's an amazing idea. However, I'd really like to know if you experience problems with paint chipping or blocks sticking together? I've tried watered down PVA glue, modge podge, various varnishes, nothing seems to stop it however I try to seal the foam (including using various methods of initial priming). Regardless of how dried or rock solid they are, if I leave them stuck together for more than a couple of minutes, inevitably once I pull them apart there'll be some that stick and paint will peel off and the effect is ruined. My initial thought is that perhaps it's because I am using blue foam, but from seeing dozens of other makers use blue foam in their builds and this doesn't seem to be an issue. Any advice or suggestions would be fantastic as I seriously enjoy your stuff and want to build more, but cannot seem to find a solution to this problem

This is a bigger problem in hotter climates (and hot storage cupboards!), mod podge/pva makes it worse, I find it's less of an issue with matte varnish. I find this is worst on my stairblocks as they stay magnetised together in storage, but they don't damage as long as I'm careful when first separating them after a while - might be worth trying?

Minecraft is actually a nice way to put it.
