Unexpected tears, after going and reading more about him. Born in England, raised in South Africa, a successful businessman until a turn of bad luck wiped him out, died a pauper but rich in the love and tolerance of those around him. Long live the memory of the benevolent Emperor Norton.

We Spaniards know the story of the self-proclaimed emperor, he seems to us to be a respectable man who dreamed of a United States without corruption, it's a pity he was unable to make his dream come true and currently the United States Congress works for foreign powers and large multinationals

Emperor Norton's assessment of congress was and is spot on.

After the 1860's, people probably assumed he was a civil war veteran in this uniform he chose. Never had heard his story. Thanks!

This was the problem when the United States was first started. No one knew what was happening or what to call themselves. They couldn’t call the new leaders King’s, Emperors, Excellencies etc. They eventually came up with the old English term of The ‘Presiding Officer, which later turned into The President. They were British after all, or as we called em’ here in Britain. ‘Rascals’.😅

Well, the United States still has never had a Jewish president, but at least it once had a Jewish emperor.

Only fitting America would have had an emperor considering we've also had a Duke Ellington, a Count Basie, Prince, and a King Von.

Of course, Donald Trump wanted to be the second Emperor of the United States (but definitely NOT any Protector of Mexico). The difference between the first and the second was that Emperor Norton was well-beloved. And Norton was quite prescient in many ways.
