High ground retake is something I struggle with, as you say lot of flashy impractical things out there, or geared towards m&k players.

I play kbm and i never do retakes, i only really do quad edits, triple edits side jumps and stuff like that to get height with ofc protecting myself, i see high ground retakes to be useless because a player could just keep single ramping on height to keep it and never let them take height even with all the fancy things they could be doing. When ever i see a (no offence) controller player doing these fancy retakes, i would just shoot them where they are vulnerable and all it does it let me hit them compared to the simple stuff i do.
