When asked which microphones to consider when you're new to podcasting, many consultants historically have named the Samson Q2U, the Audio-Technica ATR2100, and over the past 4 years, the ATR2100X. The Q2U has not been updated (other than it's now available in gray) since it was released. The bit-depth for the Q2U is 16-bit and the output connection when used in USB mode is USB Mini-B. The ATR2100X offers a 24-bit depth along with USB-C connection. As of this date, the Q2U normally sells for about $70 (Amazon, Sweetwater) and the 2100X is about $49. I've used the Q2U and the original ATR2100 for about 10+ years and the 2100X for about six months. To my ears, the sound / frequency curve of the ATR2100X is slightly more pleasing than the Q2U, ATR2100, or the other budget priced Audio-Technica AT2005. There are well-known podcasters with large followings using the Q2U and the Audio-Technica mics today, so these mics aren't restricted to new creators. When asked by potential podcasters which mic to start with - and potentially use as a daily driver for years - the ATR2100X is my strong recommendation.

Excellent overview and thoughts my friend! You nailed it with the comparison to its predecessor and "cousin" the Q2U. At one point, it seemed like this mic was as pervasive as the once sought after Heil PR40. Remember when that was a thing? 😁 I also think I agree with you on the sound. I was really having a hard time finding much fault with the audio when I was listening back while editing. Really nothing a simple EQ couldn't fix. Thanks again for this great comment. Always appreciated.

underrated channel. amazing review because you covered a lot of aspects. i wanted to see how it matched against the sm7b and usb vs xlr and you covered it all and more! where did you buy the mic cover foam?

the only con with this mic is that there's no gain control on the microphone. I use it as a USB plug-in on Mac OS and I turn it all the way up, the voice is still a little too low (which is quite the opposite of my experience with a Blue Yeti - this one, gain goes through the roof and the sound starts breaking)
@FreePodcastTools2 ай бұрын
That's a good point. While I haven't had issues getting enough gain from it, the mic should have a way to control the volume onboard. Great comment!

how do u handle that? I have this issue to. I record in Garageband.

@@Thiss55 im not willing to drop another $100 to go full XLR and ramp up gain. I looked up some videos for comparison but dont really hear any difference. I just talk very closely into the mic.. maybe i should contact audio technica

@@narendly thanks for catching that reply and responding. I'm going to have to look into this issue deeper and see how Audio Technica addresses it.

Is there any benefit of using XLR or this mic instead of type C. I am confused with using XLR will unleash full potential or it os same as type C ?
@FreePodcastTools4 ай бұрын
I didn't really notice a difference between USB and XLR (unless your audio interface has processing like EQ and compression). If you have the ability to do some processing in post production I would simply use it via USB. There are people out there who will swear they can hear the difference but I am not one of them.

Can you connect to a sound card? I have a F998.
@FreePodcastTools5 ай бұрын
It connects to a standard audio interface that has a 3 pin XLR port. It doesn't look like the F998 has that port. I would reach out to the company and ask them if you can use an XLR to 1/8" adapter with a microphone to make sure it would work.
