That was kind of frightening actually. Had Yoda turned to the dark side when Order 66 was unleashed, we would have seen what Sauron in LOTR desired to become. But not just endless master of the world, but that of the galaxy. That he SO far exceeded even Sidious at his most powerful in the dark.....yikes. Dooku was not a man to fear generally anything either.

I choose to believe that Yoda has an intimate relationship with the dark side, therefore he chooses the light! Yoda is so powerful with the force that he easily changes from the light to the dark back to the light to prove to dooku where the true power is.

Dark Rendezvous is perhaps the best Clone Wars era novel. Never before, or after, is Yoda or Dooku written so well and to character. No other novel really puts home how much Dooku's departure from the Jedi was a big deal, and how big of a score it was for Sidious to recruit Dooku as Yoda says "The most powerful Dooku was. The most learned, the most knowledgeable. Our greatest student, our greatest failure." It is only novel that explains clearly why Yoda broke centuries of tradition, and his own 300 year old personal rule, that the Grand Master does not take a padawan. Yoda felt he was the only one capable of training such a powerful and gifted student. It more than anything underlines the twin failures of Dooku and Anakin, because the Jedi made the same mistake TWICE with their most gifted students.

@@ModernDayRenaissanceMan Luke was never stronger than Vader as of the OT. In ESB, he gets shit on. As of ROTJ, it’s only after a lengthy time spent training that he’s even at that Knight level. He really only even beats Vader at the end by not only giving into the Dark Side, but by Vader not even fully intending on killing Luke (or at least feeling conflicted and not fully present with one direction). Luke is powerful as of the end of ROTJ, but is nowhere near Grandmaster level, and had also trained much more than just on Dagobah in ESB

I like the way Maul taught Ezra about how emotion and passion fuels the dark side, and the way Ezra learned that your family and connection to them can be your safe place and tether to the light, instead of being a path to the dark. I agree with Yoda’s point about being content and grateful, and I agree with Dooku’s point that the “dark side” is just another part of the force. Honestly I don’t think people get “consumed by the dark side” and lost forever, I think it has more to do with the individual’s pride, and having that much power means you don’t have to apologize or humble yourself. I think it’s not that the dark side turns people, I think it just gives corrupt individuals a way to not have to have accountability for their actions, and an excuse for what they did in case they get caught.

There was a similar meme regarding Grogu. It was Grogu in the future teaching his own Padawan and he told him that love and connection to others (which Jedi eschew) does not necessarily lead to the Dark Side, but the fear of LOSS does. Once you realize that even those who die before you are not really "gone" but have rejoined the force, then you can never be afraid of loss again, and the Dark Side will never threaten you.

Think of it like this: The Dark Side is like an amplifier of your deepest desires and passions. It operates like a hard liquor, in that it helps release your inhibitions, and you'll do whatever you can do in order to obtain those desires. For some people, it's insanely easy to fall into the dark side, like Anakin, if you press on his seeming helplessness to save those he cares about. Or even use Windu's passion for the Jedi to push him beyond reasonable action and to go for something a Sith would do. For others, their sense of justice refuses to allow them to move. Obi-wan, as dogmatic as I could find him, has this character that keeps him tethered to the Light. However, I think only Qui-Gon and Yoda come closest to truly being Jedi in the sense that they can find balance between the Light and Dark. It isn't as black and white as just declaring one side totally good or totally evil, but it's a complicated factor with many moving parts, all working within the bounds of the Living Force.

I think the larger point is that just like a light side yoda a dark side yoda doesn’t want anything. The difference is, the dark side yoda wouldn’t care about anything other than his whims. Meaning essentially dark side yoda would be the equivalent to a Greek god. All powerful and very whimsical. Could wipe out the entire universe and start anew just because he was bored. Because the ironically the dark side of the force embodies change, death, decay, chaos. Just as Yoda is an avatar of the light, peace, life, serenity, growth, healing, the dark side yoda would embody the very end of the universe itself

The rose thing is even more interesting. It really reminds me of zen masters who use such technique to disrupt the way of their opponents thinking. Rose is right out of the scheme that Dooku suggests since it cannot be truly estimated. Values, on the other hand, not only are estimated, but can be owned. Riches or knowledge are no different - you have some, you desire more, and thus you fall in an illusion.
@AmbrosiaDreamWeaver

I'm glad someone else caught onto the importance of the rose. Myself I was considering how the rose symbolizes love and passion, and found it interesting that that's what Yoda asked for, suggesting that if he has any desires, it would be love and passion. I also found it funny that instead of just admitting he couldn't use the Dark Side to make Yoda a rose he just gets mad and tells him to want something else. Rather unbecoming of a Count...

I need to read the books, this creates conflict within me. It makes me sure that not only does he have knowledge of the dark side of the force, I believe that he once (maybe like 700 years ago or something) was consumed by the emotions that he now says to avoid and he had to learn the hard way to let go, by experiencing loss and heartbreak himself and a lot of it. I think it took decades or maybe even longer for him to realise that the dark side of the force wasn't the answer.

considering that Mace was considered to be the only jedi of the time to control both light and dark, my guess is he could end up being a stabalizing balance as well (if he was able to evenly control both sides), making him both utterly humble and happy as he is with the light, but ruthless and downright destructive with the dark, if he was able to control it properly then id guess that only anakin, or even the Father would have to intervene (if need be)

Mace didn't weird the dark, he used the dark of others against them. He didn't touch the dark, but he used it, he didn't produce the dark within him, he let then do it, and then when it came forth he'd catch it and throw his own power and their power back. When he scarred Palpatine, it was Palpatines own force lightning bouncing back and forth between them, never touching mace , but left in a circuit always slamming into who produced it. Palpatine was a conductor of the dark, mace a neutral, so the dark would always seek the one who could channel it over and over. A darkside user can be attacked with the dark, but mace using VA pad was immune to it. I often wonder how long that circuit would have kept bouncing back on Palpatine if mace wasn't interrupted.

A Jedi cannot become one with the force without knowledge of both powers of the light and of the dark. One can have supreme knowledge of all that is darkness and night and still choose to perform deeds of light. 🌚🌞. Obi Wan, Kwi-Gon, Yoda, Mace, Luke, and many others pulled this off. 😉

I think the main reason that yoda's species is so well armored against the dark side is their long lives and high force aptitude. They have centuries to learn about themselves and what it means to be a long life species. Yoda accepts the fact that he cannot save everyone because not everyone can have long life and civilizations do not exist forever. He knows that because of his long life he will experience many things outside of his control and lose many things that are precious to him because those things do not have the capability to exist longer than him. The dark side doesn't have the ability to stop this, as nothing does, so he doesn't need the dark side as it cannot offer him any power that he doesn't already possess, it would just make him angry and cause him to lash out with all his power at a galaxy that doesn't deserve his wrath. In this case I don't think the dark side actually gives anyone power they don't already possess, it just makes it easier for them to unleash it in an uncontrolled way more quickly than the person could learn to use their full power through practice and self control. But I think that in that same line of thinking, Yoda was also curious as to why so many Jedi could fall to the dark side because he no longer has the perspective of a species with a shorter life span. A shorter lived species falls to the darkside more easily because they desire the power it grants and wants to use it to extend their own lives and provide them with the things they want more easily rather than needing to work so hard for it for so long because their lives are short. They don't want to work their entire lives to earn something and only be able to enjoy it in their retirement years and old age, and yoda has a hard time seeing that I think. It's difficult to ask someone to see your perspective of working for things slowly when you have the natural advantage of long life so that even if it takes you 40 years to get something, it's not so long for your total life span and once you have it you can enjoy it for longer.

The strawmanned arguments that the writer composed for Dooku demonstrates that they're not able to see through the perspectives of their interlocutors. This interaction isn't "Yoda owns Dooku's dark side arguments", it's a case of a writer not understanding the arguments for the dark side well enough to actually make the arguments compelling.

Does this mean a dark side user becomes even stronger if they spent time in the light? If this is first time Yoda gave into the dark and Dark Yoda surpasses Sidious, despite being the first time, then how would this effect Sidious if he turned to the light? Would he become stronger by being Palpatine instead of Sidious, yet still maintaining his dark side knowledge? Hypothetically speaking. Does the dark amplify the light and does the light amplify the dark. Dark Yoda surpassing Sidious in an instant makes the idea likely. Maybe this does explain why Windu defeated Sidious. I kept suspecting Sidious lost on purpose because he sensed Anikin's arrival and used it to his advantage, but now I think that maybe by using both the light and dark is in fact the true way. In in order to protect power is needed and isn't Star Wars all about balance?

I think a Dark Side Yoda might literally destroy the galaxy. Super scary!! I remember the book and the passage you quoted. I read it when it was first published and those passages moved me greatly. I have to say that I disagreed with the “acceptance” that Yoda and the Jedi preached. It bordered on apathy. It basically taught you should just accept everything---regardless----and not try to make things better. Sure, your loved ones will die---eventually. But if you can keep them from dying today---why not? Civilization has basically progressed only because people are trying to make things better: for themselves, their families, other people. Your best intentions may not always work out----but does that mean you should never try? “Do---or do not.” There is no try”. I disagree. Sometimes all you can do is try. And you should. In the movie Lord of the Rings, the hero Aragorn rallies his troops with a great speech. “One day the race of Man will fall------but it will NOT be THIS day!!” Aragorn accepts that one day Darkness may cover the land----but it will not be today, if they resist it. To try, to strive, to not accept defeat before you have even fought. What I did find entirely touching in the book passages, was that Yoda offered his fallen apprentice his love. With no strings attached. In essence, Yoda told Dooku that he would always be his master---his parent---and would always love him, regardless of what Dooku did. He told Dooku that he was always welcome back, at any time. Yoda did not try to force or harm Dooku. He just offered his love freely and left the rest up to Dooku. Perhaps it gave Dooku some peace---to know that Yoda still loved him. Maybe in some alternate universe, Dooku returned to the Jedi Temple, to see Yoda, and bearing a single perfect rose. It is a nice image. The Dark side is, of course, what we would term Evil. And evil is essentially greed. You want power, wealth, prestige, influence, something that you cannot get otherwise. And evil is obsessive, it is never satisfied. No matter how much you get, yo want more. I think that is also what Yoda was trying to tell Dooku. That Yoda, for all his power, could be happy with a single rose.

"“Do---or do not.” There is no try”. I disagree. Sometimes all you can do is try. And you should. " - I disagree with your disagreement 🙂 In my opinion, what Master Yoda means is that one must "do" with intention and conviction, while "try" implies a doubt which immediately opens up a bigger door to the possibility of a failure, in this case by your own responsibility - that's what happens to Luke when he "tries" to lift the X-Wing and fails: "I don't believe it," he says after Yoda did it. “That is why you fail”. The doubt that weakens the intention.

We actually will never know what Dooku would do or say, or if Yoda got through to him. What follows their debate would harden Dooku's heart for good thanks to Sidious' manipulations. Rather than coming closer, Dooku and Yoda duel once again, Dooku fueled with hate and anger after what he believes is an outright betrayal from Yoda, coming quite close to killing Yoda there on Vjun. But, again, Dooku wasn't just evil, he was always pragmatic. But for the interference of Anakin and Obi-Wan, Dooku could have easily accepted Yoda's offer.

We all know he would have come back and it would have been beautiful if not for Obi-Wan an Anakin didn't just barge in there and fuck it all up essentially. He would have came back and that would have probably threw it real BIG monkey wrench into Darth sidious's plans. THE ENTIRE SITH GRAND PLAN RELIED ON SECRECY. I know count dooku wasn't privy to every bit of it but exposing his sith master and all of his true dealings in the Republic would have forced sidious to take certain steps for the grand plan and his life LOL 😂 The same way we all know that if Qui-Gon jinn had lived and raised Anakin as his Jedi Master he would have never fallen in the first place, having had a master who would have already tasted the dark side for practically the same reason you are going to someday, he would have helped him work through it and we would have probably got something absolutely beautifully terrifying in terms of force potential.

I don't like the idea of Yoda TURNING to the dark side. Dooku wasn't talking about holding on to one side, but embracing both. It's way too polarized, but that's because the concept of jedi vs sith already IS way too polarized. A master of both sides of the force would ideologically always strive for their version of a good galaxy, but still somehow never being unfair. Just poetic in justice, but still brutal. A master of both sides of the force would be like that of a beast, wrecking holy retribution throughout a universe of sinners that deserve no mercy. Because perfect justice is fair, but for it to be fair it has to also be poetically brutal. A master of both sides of the force would basically just BECOME the force but made beast.

Tyrannous is a novice Sith. Also I think that Yoda has shown many signs that he has a unique mastery over all aspects of the Force, including the dark side. I think the same. I feel Yoda had *already* done what Dooku was asking. He had embraced his dark side. The other Jedi lived in fear of it, so they were basically suppressing a half of themselves. Dooku tried and failed, because ultimately his pride and ego overcome his compassion and humility. But Yoda had done precisely what the Jedi are meant to: to bring balance to the force, not worship the light side or be consumed by the dark side like the Sith. He had *already* made peace with his desires, his emotions and his fears. This means he must have faced them. He had already united both sides of the force within himself. He did not need to 'use' the dark side but he had access to it. He's simply never tried to 'give in' to it before this moment. From the language often used, it seems the dark side is more of a baser, animal instinct that one 'gives in' to while the light side is a more theological or intellectual set of tenets that one 'believes in'. Yoda did neither. He simply allowed the Force to guide him.

Yoda doesn't want power, so it doesn't seem likely he would fall to the dark side, just from channeling his passion to save his friends. A lot of force users have used their passions without turning evil and cruel and using it from a good way, to save people's life shouldn't be as dangerous as he thinks. It would be more like taking a step towards a grey jedi, than a step towards the sith.

It must be hard for Yoda, seeing Dooku becoming their ultimate enemy (before they knew Sidious even existed), as Dooku was Yoda's personal Padawan. The first one he had in such a long time, seeing so much potential inside of Dooku. Although, for all Yoda's wisdom, he remained blind to the real problems Dooku had with the Jedi's dogmatism and the legitimate grievances many planets in the galaxy had with the Republic. Yoda really could have been a force for change for the better inside the order had he not been so blinded by dogma. It's hard to imagine that someone as wise as he was couldn't see the issues that surrounded him every day, as they really were quite glaring imo 🤷

I think one of the biggest reasons Yoda was ok with letting go and being so understanding that not everything can be controlled was his age. Years of seeing so many lives lost, having that much time to cope and learn was a luxury. One not everyone could be afforded. Other force users looked for the quicker and easier way because not everyone gets a couple centuries to build as strong of a sense of self. He was incredibly wise, but I think that numbness dulled how well he could empathize with others.

I’m not much knowlegeable about Star Wars, but I think that if Yoda had used the dark side to stop order 66, this event would have corrupted the Jedi order forever: even the Grand Master of the Jedi used the dark side when things got bad, so why would any other Jedi not do the same thing? The Jedi order would have no future, because this idea would contaminate all Jedi hearts, even if the Siths were physically eliminated, they would still survive as an idea inside the Jedi.

At least Yoda acknowledges a that the Dark Side can offer power and actually listens to Dooku instead of just saying that only the Light Side is always right and that Dooku was a fool for following the path of the Sith. By going to the Dark side for Dooku, Yoda showed he was in control of his dark side ENTIRELY. That is what really make Dooku afraid. Not what he could become, not that he was more powerful than Sidius either, i think. Contrairy to all others he knew, Dooku could see the dark side incarnated but CONTROLED by Yoda. ''Give me my Rose...'' was the proof the good side was still there...and in total control. And mastering one's own dark side, is supreme mastery. Dooku doesn't controled his own dark side; power and supreme wisdom is what he wants...and because he wants it, the Sith use him... He knows that. That is the reason he deleted the archives... because he wants to prove to Yoda and all the Jedi HE WAS RIGHT to fray toward and even with, the dark side... As he believe knowledge of the dark side hide the ultimate secret; the weakeness of the dark side...what could kill Sidious and give Dooku ""total power"". The truth is, Sidious is the Dark Side incarnated. Dooku wants the secrets and he is ready to do Sidious biding to achieve that goal...making himself evil (but never totally) but he is not fool enough to give DAgobah to Sidious either...Dagobah might be the last place to hide if his plan fail... it is a safe gate for him... And forcing a fight between Sidious and Yoda might give Dooku a chance to strike the deadly blow...and get rid of Sidious once and for all. Dooku is an idealist who believe he has the best plan to achieve victory against Sidious...But his true purpose must stay secret... In private, Dooku wants to take down Sidius. But time is running against him and Sidius knows Skywalker is coming to his side...he will soon gain Skywalker and get rid of Dooku half devotion...for someone more naive, young and even more powerful. That is why he said to Obi-Wan ''You should have join me Obi-Wan, i told you everything you needed to know...''

Really like this video! I think Yoda was wise to show Dooku how easy it is to let yourself fall to your own desires or fears. Alternatively, how easy it is then to obtain those very same goals from the other side of the spectrum. Or rather, to accept some things as the law of the force, that everything must come to an end eventually. If Yoda were to have given in entirely and used to dark side to save the Jedi; I believe he would have just become the very thing he sets out to destroy.

I believe he did. In his fight with Sidious. For a brief moment as he was repelling the force lightning if you look into Yoda's eyes I believe he gave in momentarily in order to over power Sidious. @@Berserker3624 for the most part. Up until the moment I was referring to when Yoda over powered him. He looked terrified. I believe Yoda did momentarily tap into the dark side there but pulled himself out too soon. If he would've held on a bit longer he absolutely would've killed Sidious. Perhaps Yoda was thinking, he must stop Sidious by "any means necessary" but changed his mind quickly thinking it wasn't worth it to kill with the dark side. That's my interpretation from that brief moment that ended the dual anyway.
