Pointlessness doesn't seem to me the appropriate word. It's just for it's own sake but clearly the opposite of pointless.

I think you're right. When we describe something as pointless it is often to refer to something that isn't good. Love has instrinsic value, or love is something we should want for its own sake, is a more suitable expression.
