I was a prison officer for over 23 years and I must say this drama was fairly accurate, although like a lot of dramas all the incidents were compressed into a very short space of time. I never once saw all that shouting and hollering in a prison van that was on its way to a prison. Also, none of that touching of arms etc goes on. That would be classed as an assault. I realise of course it is poetic licence. Even so, I was gripped by this series from start to finish. Nice one.
@michaelspears71163 жыл бұрын
Touching of arms as in the pat down the officer gives Sean Bean's character? That would be classed as assault in the UK?
@briboy20093 жыл бұрын
@@michaelspears7116 No, touching when doing a body search is something different. But indiscriminate touching is a no no. Nowadays of course they have those scanner things. So that takes touching out of the equation.
@michaelspears71163 жыл бұрын
@@briboy2009 Interesting. I'm interested in corrections but haven't spoken to too many people from the UK who have gone through the system as an inmate or worked in it as an officer. From what I've heard though, corruption isn't very prevelant at all among staff in your prisons. Very different to here in the US. I've heard some horror stories from Australian and Canadian prisons, too. Hopefully your system keeps up that standard of accountability and professionalism.
@briboy20093 жыл бұрын
@@michaelspears7116 Thanks for that Michael. I did not witness any corruption from my fellow officers myself. I think that was mainly down to the adequate salaries we got and a good pension scheme. Not many would want to risk that by being corrupt. The corruption thing in this drama I think is again poetic licence. When a prisoner is moved secretly to another prison for whatever reason it remains a secret. The grapevine in real life is not as good as the one portrayed in this drama. Nowadays a lot of our prisons are run by private security firms and they fall woefully short of the standards set by officers in the past. These private security firms do not provide the salaries and pensions that we received back in my day.
@briboy20093 жыл бұрын
@@GuacamoleyNacho In my day touching an inmate to perform a body search did not both me in the least. Inmates who are believed to be suicidal are placed on special watch. This means they are checked every 15 minutes. I never came across an inmate that wanted to paint his own cell. However, they can decorate their own cells with ornaments and pictures etc.

The van is bad .. the holding room is scary .. the strip search is intrusive .. the first night is hard .. the introduction to your cell mate is tough. I was released on interim liberation after 10 days but in those 10 days I saw drug taking, mobile phones and a guy in the next cell was beat senseless because of one of his former convictions was rape. I coped because I'd served 10 years in the military and living close quarters I was used to. I would never ever want to go back, prison really doesn't suit a semi quiet layed back non confrontational guy like me.

@Jordan Belfort For the most part people just want get their time done. You've just got to navigate your way around without stepping on toes. Putting so many alpha males in such close proximity will always be a bit tricky. They say don't let yourself be used or bullied, that's easy to say. The thought of having to stand up for yourself in a bad situation is quite scary but that only happened once in the ten days thankfully. It's quite pivotal for me that time inside. It gave me a great example of another route in life, a sliding doors glimpse so to speak.
