I believe I have found a true, value added use for a three-point sling. Compelled by a range master to use one, I promptly accepted the offered three point sling and whipped said range master with it until we all agreed that a two point sling would be OK. Seriously, great video on use of 2 point quick adjust slings. Nice to see an accurate and clear review on the fundamentals of a subject we all tend to overthink.

Nice video. Perfect demonstration of how easy the quick adjust sling is to pick up and use efficiently. I have an old first gen. Viking tactical sling and I do like the design. It's easier and quicker to adjust than the sider style on the magpul slings. However the magpul slings have really nice high quality webbing material that I perfer over the thin nylon the first gen Viking sling had.

I find that keeping my quick adjust 2 point all the way right for walking around and doing non gun work, (admin stuff). And strong side hasty sling. I run it as loose as it will go for situations requiring more dynamic movement, shoulder bump (Transfer stock from strong to weak keeping hands in place, "push forward, bump to the left") instead of the weaving and waving my arms through my sling to switch shoulders. I like 3 point. It makes a lot of sense for guys who spend all day geared up engaged in a wide variety of tasks. For me, a One Tigris quick adjust 2 point, has been working nicely.

Using your sling to aid in marksmen ship is a valuable skill, if you ever get into precision rifle matches later in life, you will use everything you learned, while slinging up is not real useful for ARs and light weight rifles like this, as soon as you start heaving 12-16 pound bolt guns into your shoulder, you will be thankful of sling techniques

I've been using the VTAC sling for the past 10 years on multiple deployments and it is my favorite. Easy to adjust whether you are using no kit, armor, other stuff you are wearing. You do have to replace them every year or two of daily use and adjustment because the nylon expands (?) as it wears and won't feed smoothly. I'll have to try the adjustment for prone and off hand though.

The Swedish Military has an interestingly simple system for their slings with their standard issue weapon (Ak 5C) where you can decide yourself if you want 1-point or 2-point style of sling and switch between them quick and easy. Usually from what I have seen is that soldiers on guard duty use a 1-point configuration where as soldiers in a, let's say, "combat" environment tend to use it in a 2-point configuration.

I can definitely see the advantages to this type of sling thanks to this video, but what happened at 12:25 is why I'm still hesitant to give up my very simple 2 point strap sling, in favor of a quick adjust sling. Nobody can afford that type of snag in a gunfight.

Ian, I can't tell you how ecstatic I was a few years ago when I discovered all your FORGOTTEN WEAPONS vids, with you handling, shooting, and disassembling guns that I had previously seen only in tiny black and white photos, with just a paragraph or two of text.... I absolutely love your content, and learn from you even when I rewatch the vids! That being said, I must respectfully disagree with your statement at 2:26, that the US GI sling was used for National Match shooting and not for actual combat. It may not have been COMMONLY used for that purpose, but I have read firsthand accounts of experienced competition riflemen that "slung up" to engage Japanese troops in the distance. Two of them were written by Marines who witnessed such a thing, and one was from a soldier who wrote of doing it himself (I don't recall the titles off the top of my head, but might be able to figure out at least one of them without too much difficulty, if you want). I found it interesting that all three instances I have found were in the Pacific islands, where you might expect that the jungle environment would preclude the use of such long range shooting skills, and I have not read of such a thing in the European or African fighting...... I love, love, LOVE your WWSD series, but in the interest of fairness I think you two need to get to work on some WWKD vids now!

Another thing about the "muzzle down" sling position: You could have the length of the sling to where the stock hangs right below the armpit. When you need your rifle, all you need is to bring it up much like drawing a handgun.
@swiss_luri81512 жыл бұрын
One thing you can also do is tighten the sling (you don't have to this will make it snugger tho), rotate the rifle clockwise, and drop it to your left (as a right-handed shooter). This works very well if the rear attachment point is close to or at the receiver. It will put the rifle out of the way nicely and quickly, while also securing it quite snugly to your body. It is also very fast and easy to redeploy the rifle from this position.

I prefer the adjustment release on the front point, where I can access it, at any length. Personal preference, this is not writ, nor the best way to do it. Just where I like that control to be located. (Also a slider on the loose tongue.) I actually made mine from a 3 point system, and added a friction lock to the front sling swivel to make it usable. I agree with you on 3 point slings, and add one more complaint: One too many potential points of failure. However, there's usually enough strap there to make something useful out of it, in a pinch. In Ian's (FAMAS) video, he presented the scenario where you Had to use a 3 point? Yeah, use it as a 2 point system.

Great topic & video. As a lefty, I've encountered problems with the sling swivel mounted directly forward of the ejection port (like it is on Ian's rifle in the video). When shooting in awkward positions or from the right side (weak side for a lefty), the sling can get close enough to the ejection port to cause a failure to eject. Rare, but enough to be aggravating and usually happened when I was in a position that made it especially difficult to clear the malfunction.. I ended up moving the swivel to the forward end of the handguard. YMMV
@hawk9mm7 жыл бұрын
Just a quick suggestion @Karl & Ian if you're listening (reading) I've been using these slings myself and like them quite a lot, that said the cordage that they use I feel is just too loose and I have to feel for it because it's just rope. I found that replacing the rope pully with this: ferroconcepts.com/collections/accessories/products/itw-zipline-orbit(or where ever you can find that exact one it's not the zipper one this is the larger version) makes quite a difference. The ring allows you to hook a finger in or grasp it normally and the material that it is made out of is a bit like rubber so it seems to stay in place rather then hang down and flop around while you're trying to move so grabbing it is repeatable. I just did a test with the ITW ring and I could just tell right off just adjusting the length of the sling like I normally would there was a significant amount of easy with which I could find without looking and grab the adjuster and pull on it. Long winded sorry, basically it helps quite a lot.
