Thanks for teaching me how to hunt Meadow, I'm about to head out for my first day of bird season at Steven's Point!

My late father used to take me grouse and woodcock hunting every weekend in October and early November in central Michigan. We had a black lab who worked close and retrieved the birds we shot. I haven't been bird hunting in 25 years, not least because it is no longer popular among people I know now. She's right that hunter recruitment and retention is the biggest issue. This is not the pastime it once was. It was encouraging to see a young person like Meadow with an obvious passion for the woods.

0:59......Cinnamon variation bird. Would have liked to see it. Those of us in the mideast never see them. Grey versions for us. Beautiful , but drab. Younger woman; no lines around the eyes. But uses a Beretta O/U for Grouse. Probably sub-gauge and too light. But she has the youth and eyes and reflexes to hunt the coverts. Also has the knowledge of the birds and their behavior. A wicked quad of experience to use on Grouse. If she can shoot, she would be deadly. 2:26......looking for sign and being a biologist for RGS is a 2+ in her field ability. You know she is serious when she has the flush and bird counters on her whistle lanyards. Why didn't these women show-up until I was too old to appreciate them!?? If I were 30 years younger, I would hunt her and ask if we could hunt the coverts that I had found. Such is life. The clock keeps ticking forwards. And a lot of Wild Turkey while watching this. 5:48......If we don't have the people, we don't have a future. No truer words were ever said. We need the younger generation in on this. We need to educate and tell the younger people that this is your birthright. You must encourage and nourish your birthright or it will wither and die. If there was a way to get inner city kids out into the woods and experience the hunting ethos, we might make a dent in the anti/ Disney fairy-tale world of make believe. Ask a 12 year old where his hamburger comes from, and he will probably tell you from the grocery store. Already wrapped in plastic. Where does the milk come from? Education is the way to stop this schism between nature and school-taught buy it in a plastic wrap. It almost looks like she changed to a Sterlingworth SxS at 6:50. Good for her if she did. One should be able, by your 5th decade, to shoot any action well. If not, you were not listening to your elders. And you held on to the crap of one type of action was better than another. Most of us out here have gotten past that point. We shoot whatever feels the best for that day and game. I run 4 different gauges. I hunt with only one at a time. I may carry more than one gun, but they will be in one gauge. But this is myself. I am nobody. Take my ranting with a grain of salt until you go out and do the things that I do. Trap, 16 yard line. Skeet, 12 and 16 gauge. Sporting Clays. Five stand. Early duck and grouse. 7:55.......take the kids out to shoot. Even if you have to drag them! Get them out in the field and show them what this sport is about. Not the killing, but the being out in the wild portions of our country and being able to walk in it without houses all around you. The old die-off and the young are needed to fill the shoes of those that went before them. The young will be the ones to either make or break this sport of ours.

A well-crafted and beautiful tribute to upland hunting. Currently, in northern CA with mostly duck and goose wing-shooting, I really miss upland (grew up in Western PA). I try to explain to people the incredible experience of working with dogs on the hunt, the synergy of hunter and dog is magical. But my words never convey it. this video, and many of your others, does it admirably. Simply elegant.

I appreciate this video. I grew up carrying a BB gun starting at the age of 5 with my dad walking through the grouse brush following a setter. I now have three young daughters that have that trek through the woods doing the same thing. My hope is they will gain an appreciation for this heritage and continue it throughout childhood and into being an adult. Thanks for sharing your passion through this video!

We got a GSP this spring and joined a club this fall. Recently I started taking my girlfriend her her Doberman out with me. I’ve never seen my gsp or any other dog get so excited about tracking bird, and that got her excited and wanting to get into it. Give someone the opportunity and they may surprise you. Now we take our dogs out together and couldn’t possibly enjoy the time together more

Should have got a real Deutsch Kurzhaar instead. ;-) But in all honesty I have never witnessed a Dobermann outshine a Deutsch Kurzhaar or Drahthaar or any other german hunting breed when it comes to tracking any game. Also an overly excited dog is nothing you want to have hunting with you.
